Using a pre-design template and SEO
-
Hi,
If I use a template that maybe 50 other websites use but customise it my way will I still rank or will it hurt my ranking because other websites have the same template (even though they are in a different industry).
Thanks,
-
I agree !
A long time ago, before I knew much about SEO, I had a website redesigned and the traffic tanked big time. After that, even though I am not a "designer," almost all elements of our websites are built in-house. Not only do you have control over the SEO, but you also don't have to pull teeth and get into arguments to get things done the way you want. We keep 'em simple and they look OK.
-
Also I feel that it's important to say that could be an issue with a custom website too, due to the fact that a lot of web developers are not seo professionals, so they don't build a site to be seo friendly.
-
The fact that many other people use the same template is not a matter of concern.
What might be of concern is the code that underlies the template. It could be really inefficient, lack important optimization elements, have links that are not search engine friendly, have css or scripts that slow down the delivery.... there are many potential problems.
If you are using a template and are going to put a lot of work into your content and into your SEO then a quick evaluation by an experienced SEO might save you problems. I would want to spend a lot on content and SEO and only get fractional value because of a crap template.
-
There are lots of templates that rank really well, I have customers who have used templated sites and beat all of their competition. If you create lots of unique content and modify what you've got (make sure to change alt tags from the default template) and url paths for example, then you should be fine.

Hi there ! A client want to sell some products on its future website but just a small range (the most part of this website will not be an online shop). The idea is to add a "shop" button in the menu to redirect clients in this shop. I would like your opinion about how should I construct this shop, what do you think is the best for SEO : "www.website.com/shop" or "shop.website.com" thank you in advance for your answers !

Are pop-unders bad for SEO?
Hi all, I run a travel site that specializes in hotel bookings. We're working with a third-party advertiser to launch a pop-under unit when someone searches for hotels on our site. (This unit is of the "also try your search on these competing sites" variety.) I'm worried, however, that this might affect our SEO, especially in light of this on their site: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/2721313?hl=en Would Google even see these pop-unders? (Are pop-unders treated the same as pop-overs?) And, if so, would G see them as unwanted and treat them as a nuisance? Could it lead to negative SEO consequences? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks! Tom

SEO within the URL /
If I were optimizing for 'marketing success' and my URL structure was domain.com/marketing/success would that count? I'm not sure if the '/' affects the keyword term. My assumption is that it does, but I wasn't 100% sure. Thanks!

Indirect SEO boost from links
I have 2 ecommerce sites, each with a blog. I am increasing my linkbuilding efforts, but I don't want to build too many links directly to my 2 sites over a short period of time. I have decided that I will add a certain number of links to sites/pages that are already linking to my main sites (for example, a blog post on my blog, guest post on another blog, article submission, etc.). How much of a benefit can I expect in terms of rankings? Has anyone tested this out or experimented with something like this? What are the pros and cons? I appreciate thoughtful comments.
