I earned some high-quality backlinks, but the target page's ranking is not improving. Why?
-
Within the last three months, I acquired five .EDU backlinks and two editorial links to a page ranking for a competitive keyword. After the first few links came through, the page jumped from #15 to #7. It stayed there with minor fluctuations for a couple weeks. I earned a couple more good links, and the page fell as far as #44. It has recovered a bit then, but has not returned to the first page.
It is worth noting that the .EDU links were achieved by sponsoring university programs. Could Google possibly be recognizing this as a link scheme? Are the links being earned too quickly? I don't believe it could be either, as the links reside on high quality, trustworthy sites and there wasn't a sudden major influx of them.
Thank you for your insight!
Also, I think my username tricked Moz into thinking I'm a staffer. Not the case!

Hey Patrick,
Thanks for your response. I have read Kristina's article before but I'm afraid now it might be a bit irrelevant with the latest Penguin update. Google should be recognizing linkbuilding efforts much faster now that Penguin operates in real-time.

Hi Steven
I would recommend reading through a great Moz article from Kristina Kledzik on How Long Does Link Building Take to Influence Rankings. There are some great studies in this article as well as some tips and resources to help you get a thorough process going to get the most out of the links that you acquire.
Hope this helps! Let me know, thanks!

Yes, all the links are followed. My domain is old and trusted, as are the domains linking back to me.

Hi John,
Thank you for the response. Yes, the links are indexed and followed. We have not changed anything on page. Is it possible Penguin is recognizing new link activity and it is causing fluctuations? Maybe I am being impatient and just need to wait a bit for a higher ranking to settle in.

Did you check to see if the links are follow or no follow? How old is the domain?
-
Hi Steven -
Great question here and one I have heard a lot over the last few years. A few questions for you:
- Are the links indexed?
- Did you make any changes to your site that may have affected your page's ranking (robots.txt, internal linking)?
In the good old days of SEO, it was quite common to see a page jump in rankings (like you seem to have seen) from building some links. I've seen it happen within a matter of hours, actually. But things have changed (probably to keep people from gaming the SERPs too hard) and sometimes it can take weeks or even months for links to have their full effect on your rankings.
So I'd check that the links are indexed and that you didn't change anything on your page to affect your rankings. Then, I'd make sure that your page is structured to meet your user's needs (eg if it's an informational query as evidenced by what else is ranking, don't have a super transactional page). Then, build more links and keep calm and carry on.
I hope that helps!
John

Recently I have embedded the roqibus.com site link on one of other people's more popular sites. But after I checked with Moz, it turns out that there are no backlinks from the site?

Post index of quality back links; How long should you leave it to see if it's had any impact?
The question is pretty much in the title. We had a link from a Charity site (high PA/ DA) and from Metro online recently. Indexed about 3 weeks ago and 5 days ago respectively. No movement to speak off. (Previously we've seen significant boosts from far lesser links). Should I assume they have had no effect? Or is too early to tell I know it takes up to 2 months for some of our new pages to rank, same with passing authority from links? (Note: I appreciate the competition will play a significant part in this, but my question is specifically about how long one should leave to know one way or another. )

How to analyze a backlink
My site has around 6k backlinks, which majority seem to be spammy. I understand the whole process to contact the webmaster, try to get them removed, and disavow them if you cannot get them deleted. 1. What are some main signs of spotting domains that generate negative SEO? 2. Time frame to clean up 6k links assuming 50% are bad? Currently we are looking are a service to take care of this for us, but from reading everything online it seems the only reliable way to do it would be manually. Any recommendations on this would be appreciated.

What backlink is better?
Hi Guys I recently helped out a friend with some marketing advice and to do me a favour back he said that he'll put a link on his site back to my website. Just some background on the site, it is very high quality with DA of 71 with each blog post/inner page having roughly PA of 45, it's been online for 15 years and has nearly 4,000 indexed pages and 10,000 links. Anyway my question is would it be better to get a sitewide link in a sidebar that is displayed on every page of his website or would it be better to write a blog post on the site that links back to mine? Thanks

Are reputable local directories effective link building resources for high rankings in local search?
I'm working on a local search campaign. Generally, the first thing I do is add the site to all of the local directories that I know of. I'm curious, with penguin updates, whether or not this is still an effective strategy for local search.

Links built by previous SEO company are mostly 'dead' - will this affect me?
Hi, This is my first post/question in the forum - so apologies if this topic has already been covered - or if the question seems daft! Here's the issue: I have started working on two websites, and have been doing a lot of on-site work, increasing valuable content, etc... I'm now slowly moving onto more off-site stuff and have noticed that a lot of the backlinks to both websites (built by SEO companies before I got here) are 'dead' and simply return 404 errors (yet they still show up in site explorer). I'll be honest, the links aren't great; the SEO companies have taken the word 'relevant' and completely re-defined it in their books! Will these links - from sites that aren't relevant... but are dead - have any impact on my SEO efforts from now on? Or should I treat these sites as a kind of 'clean slate' and work on building the brand naturally through social media and user experience, etc? Also - I'm re-structuring the internal pages of the site... would it be worth re-directing the old URLs (with all the dead in-bound links - that may have suffered a -50 penalty) to the new ones, or just start fresh with the new pages? Any advice, tips or stories to share (relevant ones, of course!) will be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Nick
