Is it possible to rank a second site, for my buisness, for the same location?
-
I have an insurance agency, and recently set up a new site, specifically for personal lines insurance.
My question is; Is it worth trying to rank this site, by using backlinks and unique content?
It will have the same address, and location as my main site.
I'm also concerned Google may frown on that.. Any input appreciated.

I have had clients request to build two sites at once, launch them, and see which one is favored more in Google's eyes. Same thing with individual pages-- "G" seems to like one and bury the other.
Building one on the side when the existing site is already indexed is probably going to be a risky venture.

If you are trying to rank two sites, owned by the same company for the same (or VERY similar) products/services at the same address, with content that can never be anything other than very closely related I'd suggest that this will look (rightly or wrongly) like you're game the system and Google don't like that at all. A read through of Google's Webmaster Guidelines might help you get a better understanding of what they consider to be good (and bad) practice: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/35769?hl=en
Is there any scope for you to simply bring a personal lines insurance section under your main agency site, for example? I'd expect greater success doing this as you're not trying to get two bites of the cherry.
If you were to go with a separate site, you can openly use the same content across both sites by using rel=“canonical” tags to indicate to Google (other search engines are available) that given URLs are effectively carrying the same content - Ideal if you have content that is accessible across multiple websites - as this will not impact negatively on your rankings. That said, unless there is some industry specific regulation that dictates you cannot be part of insurance agency I'd be keen to keep it on the straight and narrow and build all the content under one roof.
If you want to increase your visibility, you can potentially appear twice on the page by running a very tightly targeted AdWords campaign (you can run it for a small geographic radius) - perfect if you typically deal with local customers, face to face.
Whatever way you approach this, the potential short-term gain of beating the system (i.e. having two sites running for very similar searches) is not worth the potential long-term pain of getting caught out.
Good luck

Major Dip in Keyword Rank - Why?
Last week my ranking for "keyword A" was relatively high at 16. Since then it's dropped a staggering 31 spots. It's certainly the most important keyword we can rank for so seeing it go -31 spots is rather frightening. I have a couple of theories: We haven't included it in our blog content as anchor text but once in the past 2 or so weeks since the last crawl was done by moz on oct. 21. The lack of recent links with the anchor text of "keyword A" pointing back to the blog is causing it to lose it's rapport. I've been adding most of our blog posts to Reddit and we've been getting almost double the traffic from Reddit alone. But with that comes a much higher bounce rate (~80%). Could posting and having visitors bounce from our blog posts cause the ranking to go down? I would love to get your thoughts on this issue. Thanks,

Classified Sites Ranking on Page 1
How is it that Craigslist, and Backpage get a boost from google and take over 1 or more of the page one results in my niche? Ive also seen people ask a yahoo question, and answer with a link to their website? Are these just temporary boosts?

Where are all the sites that are linking to me?
I need to compile a list of all the siters linking to my site, but my open site explorer analysis shows very few links. I know for certain that there are many many more sites linking to it (it's an academic site and there are links to it from a lot of academic directories). What am I doing wrong?

Ways to increase ranking positions?
Hi, I want to discuss the different methods for increasing ranking positions for a keyword using offsite SEO methods. If your targeting a keyword which gets 20,000 exact match searches a month for a new website then the first thing you are going to want to do is rank in the top 5 within Google for that term. I know onsite will come into play as well but lets just say you have used the SEOMOZ tools and your onsite SEO achieves a grade A. So what needs to take place in order for your website to start climbing ranking positions? I myself would be more inclined to spend a few days creating 4-5 nice articles and offer them up for guest blogging with anchor text links. I may also use the content on a hub page, squidoo lens, wordpress blog, blogger blog, weebly blog and so on with social bookmarking thrown into the mix. But will this alone over a period of time (depending on the competition) increase rankings? Am I missing a trick here??? Cheers

SEOs and web developers frequently leave links to their site in the footer of their clients' sites. Does this negatively impact the site with the links?
Does this provide any SEO value to the receiving site? Has anyone experienced problems doing this?

List of High Ranking Directories
Hi, Does anyone have a list of high ranking free or almost free directories that have high search engine rankings and have an opportunity for a link or links for a personal development site in the USA? The directories should have the following qualities: Old Site Age A lot of unique content (or as much as a directory can have) A clean site Plenty of Backlinks going to it Facebook followers (if possible, though this might be stretching it) high search engine rankings I think you get the general idea. I'm looking for directories that are high ranking and in for the long haul. They don't have to be free, but it's best if it's inexpensive. Thanks!
