Keyword research, creating copy, fixing on-page optimisation - what next?

Wondered if I could get people's thoughts.
We/I have started working on a client's website to improve everything - a general overhaul across SEO, on-page optimisation etc. I'm relatively new to this although picking things up and learning on the job which is great, and Moz is so helpful!
So far we have conducted a review of the website, created a large list of keywords and analysed these, started overhauling the copy and adding the new keywords within this, have plans to overhaul the other elements of the site (headings, tags etc) and improve the design, functionality and customer journey through the website.
My question is: where do I go from here in terms of keywords and SEO? Is it a case of plugging in the keywords we've researched, watch how they perform, and then switch things up with different keywords if they aren't performing as well as we expected? Is it really a lot of trial and error or is there an exact science behind it that I'm missing? I just feel a little as though we've pulled these keywords out of thin-air to a degree, and are adding them into our copy because the numbers on Moz show they should perform well, and they are what we are trying to promote on the website. But I don't know if this is right?!
Perhaps I'm over-thinking it...

Have you asked the customer to describe their ideal customer? Often they say something completely broad like "everyone who wears shoes" but your task will be much easier if you know exactly who they want to walk in the door.
I think it's easier to do this with small business because they know their customers. Ask them to describe, in detail, their 4 best customers. How old are they, what do they do for a living, their hobbies - the more detailed the better. Then think of those people when you're selecting your keywords.

That does make it harder, not having the relevant data. (You can also take a look at successful competitors' sites and see what they write about, as another source of ideas.)

Thanks, Linda! That's great advice and will definitely chat with the client so we can start creating useful and meaningful content.
Unfortunately the analytics wasn't set up correctly until we took the client on, so the only data we have is from the last week or so since it's been set up! Hopefully we'll start seeing some useful data going forward so we can action that!

It's great that you are working so hard on the SEO elements of your client's website but you should also keep your focus on the actual content. Rather than choosing what Moz or any other service has identified as the "best" keywords and writing around those, spend some time thinking about what the site's users would find interesting/informative/useful, write about that and then use what you have learned about SEO to help optimize those posts.
For clues about what the site's users want, look at your Analytics and see which current posts drive a lot of traffic and have good engagement numbers. Search Console (formerly Webmaster Tools) can show you search terms that are already doing well for you and you can build out content around those. Speak to people who work for the company and have contact with customers for insight into what questions they are being asked and what topics come up in conversations with buyers.
It's not an exact science, but it's not totally trial and error either.

Linking Pages - 404s
Hello, I have noticed that we have recently managed to accrue a large number of 404s that are listed as Page Title/URL of Linking Page in Moz (e.g. http://www.onexamination.com/international/) but I do not know which site they are coming from, is there an easy why to find out or shall we just create redirects for them all? Page Speed or Size?
Hi everyone. I have a client who really wants to add a 1min html5 video to the background of their homepage. I have managed to reduce the size of the video to 20MB and I have tested the page in pingdom. The results are 1.85 s to load, and weighed in at 21.2 MB. My question is does Google factor page load speed or size in it's ranking factors? I am also mindful of the negative effect this could have on bounce rate. Thanks.

How do we maintain keyword rankings when creating a domain?
We are creating a new corporate "marketing site" on Hubspot and connecting our existing product site to that as a sub-domain. Our existing site ranks very well for all of our targeted keywords. The existing product site will now be behind a login, so how do we transfer juice to the new site in Hubspot? Or can we?

How to fix keyword cannibalization?

Excessive use of KeyWord?
Hey I have an Immigration website in South Africa

MigrationLawyers.co.za and the website used to be divided in to two categories:
1st part - South African Immigration
2nd part - United Kingdom Immigration Because of that we made all the pages include the word "South Africa" in the titles. eg.
...ers.co.za/work-permit-south-africa
...ers.co.za/spousal-visa-south-africa
...ers.co.za/retirement-permit-south-africa
...ers.co.za/permanent-residence-south-africa I'm sure you get the idea.
we since, removed the UK part of the website and now are left only with the SA part. Now my question is: Is it bad? will google see this as spammy, as I'm targeting "South Africa" in almost every link of the website. Should I stick to the structure for new pages, or try to avoid any more use of "South Africa". Perhaps I can change something as it currently stands? Kind Regards

Too Many Page Links
I have 8 niche websites for golf clubs. This was done to carve out tight niches for specific types of clubs then only broadens each club by type - i.e. better player, game improvement, max game improvement. So far, for fairly young sites, <1 year, they are doing fairly well as I build content. Running campaigns has alerted me to one problem - too many on-page links. And because I use Wordpress those links are on each page in the right sidebar and lead to the other sites. Even though visitors arrive via organic search in most cases they tend to eventually exit to one of the other sites or they click on a product (Ebay) and venture off to hopefully make a purchase. Ex: Drivers site will have a picture link for each of the other 7 sites. Question: If I have one stie (like a splash page) used as one link to that page listing all the sites with a brief explanation of each site will this cause visitors to bounce off because they will have one click, than the list and other clicks depending on what other club/site they would like to go to. The links all open in new windows. This would cut down on the number of links per page of each site but will it cause too much work for visitors and cause them to leave?

Should I create mini-sites with keyword rich domain names pointing to my main site?
Hi, I'm new to seomoz (and seo in general) and loving it so far. My main domain name is more of a brandname than a search engine friendly list of keywords. I rank well for some keywords I optimized for, and less so for the more competitive keywords. I was wondering if making one page minisites hosted on keyword rich domain names could help in this respect? What I want to do is just have a single page with a few paragraphs of content and links to the main site. I am not looking for links to boost the main site, just for the minisites to do better for several keywords. Will this help? Is this ok, or against some Google policy? Can this hurt the main site rankings? Thank you! **Edit: **I noticed that sites ranking above me on the first page for some keywords have much less on-page elements than my page, have about the same domain trust and also very little inbound links. The only factor I can see is the exact match of keywords in the domain name.

Page that has no link is being crawled
http://www.povada.com/category/filters/metal:Silver/nstart/1/start/1.htm I have no idea how the above page was even found by google but it seems that it is being crawled and Im not sure where its being found from. Can anyone offer a solution?
