Data Structure, Indexing and Canonicals
-
I was wondering if anyone would be able to share some data structure/indexing best practices. We have a site that has pages designed to display National/State/City level data - all pages have slight variations in the data and descriptions - but we're seeing google index some of the city level data for national level keywords.
the URL structure is www.mysite.com/Country/State/City/Topic.html
For example - if the query was "what is the price of beans?" we're seeing Google pick up localized versions - i.e. mysite.com/US/CA/San_Francisco/price-of-beans.html - when it should be picking up mysite.com/US/price-of-beans.html
I've toyed with the idea of using the national level page as the canonical for the state/city pages - but I don't want to hurt state/city level keywords.
Because some of the pages have only slight variances - we are also seeing a lot of soft 404 errors - We're assuming that Google is seeing the pages as duplicates even though the content is different.
Any insight/suggestions are appreciated.

Of course anytime. If you would like to give me other examples for a look at the site I can give you a lot more information.
Glad to be of help!
Tom

Thank You Tom! This is a lot of information to digest - I will review and let you know if I have any additional questions - but I wanted to thank you for your prompt response!

I have underlined and italicized your questions and answer them the best I can this hour. I also gave you all references and I hope you will start using topic clusters and pillar pages or hub pages there are a few words these. Below I have outlined what I would do with the URL structure remember simple as possible.
Please let me know if you have any questions I know the information I'm giving you is a lot. I want to answer your question thoroughly and I know if you go through this you will have a much better understanding.
You want to create relevancy and make sure you're not going to deep or more than three clicks away from the homepage. You can also use tools like deep crawl to tell you the deep rank this is a score that is provided to show you the power of your internal links. You can use Oncrawls INscore to do the same thing.
Saving you a lot of the work described in the information below. At the end of the day, you want to build a pillar page and have topic clusters

"National/State/City level data - all pages have slight variations in the data and descriptions - but we're seeing Google index some of the city level data for national level keywords".
Are you going after more than one country?
_www.mysite.com/Country/State/City/Topic.html _ ( do not use capitals when making URLs. It makes a separate URL entirely)
You do not to the country unless you are using hreflang? remember if you're not you can determine the country you want to target in Google search console the old version these are the instructions https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/6059209?hl=en
-
remember mobile first means shorter URLs
-
hostname/2 letter country or language/state (abbreviation)/city
-
ideally/category = tx or (the state of Texas)/city
-
/products/category/sub-category/slug
-
Decisions about URL structures and decisions about the IA of your website both involve questions about grouping and hierarchies of pages. For example:
URL: should the path of an individual product be:
/product-slug
/products/slug
/products/category/slug
/products/category/sub-category/slug -
IA: how should we group our product pages and link between them:
Should there be a link “up” to the parent category?
How many “levels” of sub-category page types should there be?
How do we link between sibling products in the same (sub-)category?
How many products can we reach in (e.g.) 3 clicks from the homepage? -
then as you add more things to the city of Dallas you can keep them in a pillar page
the categories to track are:
- Page URL
- Cluster topic
- Subcluster (if applicable)
- Keyword to rank for
- Is it linked to the pillar page? (Y/N)
- Is it relinked (if applicable)? (Y/N)
- Any other other actions needed
- Has the other action been taken yet? (Y/N)
- Links out to pages 1, 2, 3, and/or 4
- Is it also a sub-pillar page (if applicable)? (Y/N)
( if you do not do business outside of the United States do not place the country's name in the URL)
If you are getting good results with the "state/city pages" referenced below and replace their conical tag it will not index
_"I've toyed with the idea of using the national level page as the canonical for the state/city pages - but I don't want to hurt state/city level keywords." _
If you replace the state/city pages with the national level pages and the state/city pages are ranking well they will cease to rank well because you will have no index them.
I will add more to this tomorrow I hope this is better for help,
respectfully
Tom

Proper SEO structure for Franchise/ Franchisee websites
Hi Neighbors, Franchise website design and development can be difficult, there’s no doubt about it. I had to find the right balance between a unique and unified brand identity, and a localized experience that accurately reflects the individual franchisees and their efforts. Due to the many benefits, I have structured the to read _domain.com/location _ domain.com = TLD /location = subfolder (location page) I have also built a customized CMS (e.g. Drupal) and have given each location access to manage their location page (subfolder). To accommodate local SEO optimization, franchisees have complete control in terms of optimizing their location page (subfolder). Title tags, meta description, Alt tags, etc... Will any local optimization performed in the subfolder (location page) be stiffened because it was not done in the TLD but in the subfolder ?

Site Audit: Indexed Pages Issue
Over the last couple of months I've been working through some issues with a client. One of my starting points was doing a site Audit. I'm following a post written by Geoff Kenyon https://moz.com/blog/technical-site-audit-for-2015 . One of the main issues of the site audit seems to be that when I run a "site:domain.com" query in Google my homepage isn't the first page listed in fact it isn't listed in this search when I go through all of the listings. I understand that it isn't required to have your homepage listed first when running this type of query, but I would prefer it. Here are some things I've done I ran another query "info:homepage.com" and the home page is indexed by Google. When I run a branded search for the company name the home page does come up first. The current page that is showing up first in the "site:domain.com" listing is my blog index page. Several months back I redirected the index.php page to the root of the domain. Not sure if this is helping or hurting. In the sitemap I removed the index.php and left only the root domain as the page to index. Also all interior links are sent to the root, index.php has been eliminated from all internal links everything links to root The main site navigation does not refer to the "Home" page, but instead my logo is the link to the Home page. Should I noindex my blog/index.php page? This page is only a compilation of posts and does not have any original content instead it actually throws up duplicate content warnings. Any help would be much appreciated. I apologize if this is a silly question, but I'm getting frustrated/ annoyed at the whole situation.

Should I use Rel-Canonicals links for a News site with similar articles each year
Our small town news site provides coverage in a lot of seasonal areas, and we're struggling with the current year's content ranking above previous years. For instance, every year we cover the local high school football team, and create 2-3 articles per game. We'll also have some articles preseason with upcoming schedule and general team "talk". We've seen where articles from past seasons will rank higher than the current season, presumably because the older articles have more links to them from other sources (among other factors). We don't want to delete these old articles and 301 them to the newer article, since most articles include information/stories about specific players...and their families don't want the article to ever come down. Should we rel-canonical the older articles to the newer one, or perhaps to the "high school football" category page? If to the category page, should we rel-canonical even the new articles to that main category page? Thanks for the help.

Not all structured data not showing up
Hello, I am relatively new to all the different kinds of schema one can use to mark up a site, but not all of the structured data I entered in showing up in the structured data testing tool? Does that mean that Google can't see it either? Thanks so much in advance for your help!

How best to clean up doorway pages. 301 them or follow no index ?
Hi Mozzers, I have what is classed as doorway pages on my website. These have historically been location specific landing pages for some of our categories but from speaking to a number of different webmasters , then general consensus is that they are not in google guidelines so I will be getting punished by having them. My options are : I can 301 the pages back to their original category pages . This will conserve some link juice to pass back to the respective category page. I can set these as Follow No index. Not sure what will happen here with regards to link value etc. What would be best ?... Some of the pages do currently rank "fairly well" for some of the locations so I am getting traffic from them but I also know I will be getting a algorithmic penalty for having them so how best I clean these up ?. Also , by cleaning up the site structure , would I see any benefit here ? or will I have to wait for a new panda update/ refresh ? I thought the panda refresh won't use a new dataset thanks Pete

Structured Data Schema for Local business
Hi Where should you add ‘local business’ schema, the 'Home Page', ‘About Us’ page, 'Contact Us' page etc etc ? I presume the page with the address such as 'contact us' page but if say the address is on every page say in a footer for example is it ok to add address schema to every page ? I know someone who did this and havn't got any rich snippets out of it so presume best to focus on one primary page such as 'contact' or 'about' type pages ? Also: If your business serves multiple areas can you add schema for the other areas too or is it only for your primary business address ?
Local Website Optimization | | Dan-Lawrence
For example if your business address is listed in say ‘Wandsworth’ but you visit & serve customers in ‘Clapham’, ‘Balham’ & other regions of South West London, anyway of adding local business address structured data to your site for these areas too (to help target local searches including these other regions) Many Thanks

Perfect Site Structure help please and EMD question
Hello to all, I appreciate your time and trouble greatly, so thank you in advance. Question - 1 - I just watched a video regarding onsite <acronym title="Search Engine Optimization">seo</acronym>. This video explained to instead of using a services page to list each service, instead if possible make a page and menu item for the most popular search terms. So my families business site is allspecialtybuildings.com We do construction. I currently have it setup to have a services page then the listings of the services with its own page under the menu. But from watching this video, would you also suggest that it would be best to take maybe the top 3 or 4 services, then list the services as actual page menus? So say instead of this: Service Menu Link -
Local Website Optimization | | Berner
-Pole Barns
-Indoor Riding Arenas
-Garages
-Horse Barns
-Loafing Sheds Would it be best to have each service as a menu in itself like this: Home
Pole Barns
-Pole Barn Construction
-Pole Barn Kits
-Pole Barn Color Charts Indoor Riding Arenas
-Indoor Riding Arena Construction
-Indoor Riding Arena Kits
-Indoor Riding Arena Color Charts Same- Different word
Same- Different Word So basically create specific and relevant pages and remove the popular pages from a service page. Not sure if this make sense, or is basically not needed? Last Question - Branding- I got 2 <acronym title="Search Engine Optimization">seo</acronym> companies reviews back, and was told to change my branding and domain. See the issue is that the company name is All Specialty Buildings. So All is basically thrown out of some search results, almost like its a stop word. So "Specialty Buildings" shows up on many results. I would like to counter this. So I am curious if I get a new domain, like say something like ColoradoBarnConstruction.com Would this be a better domain for <acronym title="Search Engine Optimization">seo</acronym> rankings and memory for people? Or would I risk an EMD penalty? When I look for dentists, or <acronym title="Search Engine Optimization">seo</acronym> help, I get coloradodentist, or coloradoseo(dot)com's So they all rank well, I just want something brandable and easy to remember. I figured the company name would be best, But these companies that want 3500 a month for <acronym title="Search Engine Optimization">seo</acronym> services are saying different. Again thank you for your time, your ideas, and your advice. Thank you Chris0
