Should you aim for Google to use your meta tags?
-
When updating meta titles and descriptions, I'm taking note of whether Google is displaying the set tag or changing it to copy from the page. Does this affect the ranking position if Google is having to change the tag?
How much should I worry if Google is choosing to change every other page?
Thanks!

I have never been worried that Google prefers to choose a copy from the page instead of the meta description. On the contrary, I'm happy with it. It usually makes it longer (up to 300 characters in some cases). And this makes the visible result seem a lot bigger in the rankings. As mentioned above that could really help with CTR.

Metadata is for conversion, not ranking. Personally, I prefer to
- use the meta title as the products/ page name
- create a meta description of up to 153 characters with the target keyword added
Focus on creating good page content, just in case Google decides to use it, instead of the metadata; as is the case sometimes.

To build on Joram's answer, Google will typically use your meta description if the keyword query is inside of it. If the keyword is not in the meta description, they will grab snippet(s) from the page.

Hi,
This isn't something to be really worried about. Google sometimes chooses to (partially) eplace your meta description with content from the page, when it thinks this content is more relevant to the user's query.
In fact this can actually have a positive effect on your CTR and thus your rankings.
Hope this helps.

Title Tags & Meta descriptions do not update
Hi, I have a question about the title tags and meta descriptions of my domain b-buildingbusiness.com. I've updated them about 5 days ago but the new versions don't show in the search engines. However it does show when you check with the facebook developers tool https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/sharing/?q=http%3A%2F%2Fb-buildingbusiness.com%2F . Does anyone have an idea why they're not updated in the search engines and how I can resolve this? Best, Rik

Removing old URLs from Google
Hello, I am sure that this question has been asked many times, but I am still not sure what to do about the following: Our site's URL structure has changed a few times in the past few months. Recenty, we have changed our URLs to become more SEO friendly. However, Google has indexed the old URLs as well. To give an example: The following page in our website shows the following URLs in Google Webmaster Tools: Confúcio e Seus Ensinamentos /artigo/68_38/2/as_religioes_iv_confucio_e_seus_ensinamentos//aula/14_6132/vestibular/confucio_e_seus_ensinamentos//aula/1_14_6132/vestibular/confucio_e_seus_ensinamentos//aula/_14_6132/Vestibular/confucio_e_seus_ensinamentos//aula/ensino/confucio_e_seus_ensinamentos/ The correct URL is the last one. What should I do about the other ones? Almost all the pages in our website have this problem. We have redirected the old URLs to the new ones, but is there anything else we should do? We were asking Google to remove them, but Google has informed us that it has reached the limit. Please advise us on waht we should do. We have removed the old sitemap with the old URLs. What else must we do? Thank you very much.

How to add canonical tag
Hi, I read through many of the forum questions dealing with the overly dynamic URLS and I think I understand. Please let me know if I know what I am talking about: If SEO moz is saying I have 20 pages (mostly search and home/index pages) with overly dynamic urls, I would go to the that particular page and add the following code between the head tag: This code would cause Google to go to this page instead of the following duplicate index pages: 1. http://www.about-sports-collectibles.com/index.php?pcsid=0a83aa7119cf3d80a1d018634ec4ec94&p 2. http://www.about-sports-collectibles.com/index.php?pcsid=18b220fc62628b013a51c6f26209df50&p There are a total of about 8 of these index pages. The problem is that I can't figure out where I would access each of these duplicate pages to add the canonical tag. There is only one home page with coding. As far as the search pages are concerned, I would not want Google to follow those pages would I? If that is the case, what would be the best code to add between the tags? For instance here are a couple of the overly-dynamic URL pages for the search pages: 1. http://www.about-sports-collectibles.com/index.php?p=catalog&mode=search&search_in=all&search_str= 2. http://www.about-sports-collectibles.com/index.php?pcsid=50354d5791e627dc2be6c86528154a5e&p=catalog&mode=search I hope I am not overwhelming anyone with my questions. I really am trying to get a handle on how Ll this stuff works. Thanks so much the help. Don

Keyword use in Title tag?
To improve SEO on a particular keyword, should you use that same keyword in the title tag of multiple pages within your site? Will that help or would it actually hurt by causing pages within your site to complete against each other for that keyword? Does it make a difference if that keyword is truly used on all those different pages?
