Will removing a 301 re-direct from an old spammed URL drop the links from our profile?
-
Essentially there is an old page that has been the target of an old school link building agency. There is a 301 re-direct from the old page to the newer version.
if I drop the 301 re-direct and update our sitemaps. Will those links be removed from our profile?
The old URL passes nothing in actual value & a link building campaign has been running on the new page for over a year.

In theory, yes it should.
The 301 is designed to pass on all of the link data of a page to its new destination. That means if the redirected page has a spammy link profile etc., then it is being passed on to the new destination. The latest video blog from Matt Cutts says that pretty much all of this strength is passed on.
Breaking the 301 will break that link. It might take the crawler a while to recognise this, but it should do over time. How long is quite hard to say - case in point, I saw an old URL ranking in the SERPs for over 2 weeks (while redirecting to a new page that ranked 1 place above it), before it was dropped from the SERPs. By the same principle, it could take awhile for the crawler to recognise that the old redirected links are not being pointed to the new page any more.

Internal Link Building and Link Juice Quality
Hi There! I manage the website for a law office that covers many geographical locations. For very specific niche content, we would prefer to create one piece of content and link to the various geographic locations where we would handle that topic instead of posting multiple variations of the same content for each specific geographical area. If we put a button on these pages that has links to each location, will that have the same "link juice" effect to the pages we're linking that linking directly in the text would? (example: the Where can we help you? button on this page : http://www.zdfirm.com/volkswagen-recall/) Thank you!

Anyone seeing a big drop in links showing in Google webmaster tools?
Over the last week I have seen a big drop in links to us showing in Google Webmaster tools. The links are still there on sites that rank well including some from National newspapers. However the link count has dropped from over 4000 to less than 40 on approx 5-6 sites. Ranks etc are staying the same its just a bit of a strange thing as they still show in Majestic and Open site explorer.

Should you proactively remove spammy links?
Occasionally I notice spammy sites linking to us. Should I proactively try to request that they take down the links to avoid getting penalized? Or should I just wait for Google to provide a disavow link tool.

How to find all banklinks for a URL that forwards to a main URL
I have a client (yea! my second one doing seo) who has a law firm. He has a main site and then another site that just forwarded to his main website. He wants to find all the directories (and other places on the web) where his second site is listed. At the time when he was adding his firm into the directories, he was using his secondary url but now he wants to go back and use his main website. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a log of every place he added himself. I tried just searching Google for "mysecondarywebsite.com" (in quotes)for example but the SERPS return listings that aren't right. Suggestions?

How many nofollow links should we build to have a natural link profile
Hi guys, As with many link builders we have been building lots of dofollow links for our site, so many that mainly our incoming links are dofollow. Some pages have 99.5% dofollow external links which I know is not very natural. In your experience in terms of percentage how much should you have in terms of nofollow external links in your link profile. I noticed SEOMoz has about 12-13% nofollow external links, shall I go with this figure? Thanks guys. David

The Value Of A Link
Hi There, Let's say I am able to get a link from a very well trust worthy blog that writes abot things related to my business. Now my question is how much value does another link with the same anchor text, from the same blog has compared to the first link, or compared to a new link from a slightly less powerfull blog? Or in another words, if I got 1 link from this great website should I invest my time to find another website where I can get a link from or should I invest it in getting another link from the website I already got a link from ( which might be easier)?
