Link Churn - where have all my links gone?
-
I am sure most of you have asked yourself the question I'm asking right now..
Where have all my links gone?
I am starting to get twitchy now. I would estimate we have lost around 60% of our links in the past 3 weeks.
Does anyone have any comeback stories?
Feel like I am back to the start again.
I have made a number of changes on the site not least removing a reciprical link page.. that had over 200 links on it but from reading one of Rand's tweets is it true that linking out could be good again?

Hmm, now this is why I don't put too much effort into measuring the numbers of incoming links. The ones that are counted in some places, aren't counted in others, and the numbers skew the value as people think in terms of quantity rather than quality... then there's the fact that they jump up and down like Madonna's pants anyway.
I tried a whole bunch of different ways before concluding we don't yet seem to be of an age where we can track them, at least not to any level of reliability or significance for taking actions on them.

They have just dropped off a cliff somewhere..
They are not indexed with OSE
I kind of get the impression Majestic is just dredging up links and all sorts from its fresh link data.
It's kind of heart breaking to be honest. Oh well another day tomorrow.

Linking out is good if it is done in support of your content and the link points to trusted and valuable relevant content. (i.e. links that lend weigh to your pages' content) A page with a list of links with no textual context tend to be a flag for the Search Engines. (remember the days of the reciprocal link and link farms)
When you say your links are gone, do you mean your links in OSE? Or have companies taken down links to you for another reason?
Comeback story - JC Penney has had their status reinstated in Google after a 90 day penalty and fixing up some things.

Internal linking dilemma
My company is running a submission contest. All submissions will live on the the main contest page. When clicked, each submission will open up into their own page (with a unique URL). Each submission will also have internal links pointing to a few relevant product pages. My question: Say we receive 1,000 submissions. Is it better to have internal links from 1,000 unique, lower authority submission pages? Or should we canonicalize each submission page to the higher authority main contest page and effectively have all those internal links coming from the main contest page? Is one better than the other? Are there link spam issues to worry about with either? Thank you in advance!

Gathering links
There are numerous "Ultimate Guides" to linkbuilding, outreach, etc., and they are all written to teach you the art of linkbuilding. The only thing these guides don't tell you is that following them takes a massive amount of time and doesn't guarantee to get good links at all. We're all in online marketing, and maybe we online marketeers are familiar with linking to other websites, posts that we like, etc. and maybe that's why we can write these guides but in other niches it really doesn't work that way 🙂 I'm wondering what techniques/tactics/strategies you guys are using in less straightforward niches to get quality links to your blogposts. To give you an idea, we launched an article a couple of weeks ago targeting a very competitive keyword. The article got shared over 100 times on LinkedIn/Twitter/etc. and already ranking pretty good, but REAL backlinks are still missing. How to get people to link to that article?

Is it a reciprocal Link ?
Hi, I found a great website and tought its content would be extremely interesting for our clients. I wrote about it on my blog (which has an URL with our website URL in it) , Facebook Page and even in Twitter. Meanwhile, I contacted them and offered to write an article about an interesting subject for them. They accepted and liked it so much that they decided to put 2 links for us on two of their pages. My questions are : Will this be a reciprocal link for Google? Did I make a mistake talking about them on my blog ? Did I «devaluate» the links they gave us?

Link Farming
Are link farms still bad? I still am not sure about this question. I know that some people still do link farms. If they are bad, wouldn't a directory be considered a link farm? For instance I can get my site on a .EDU, but it will just be a list of links. Is that bad?
