Best way to enter Canada, SEO-wise?
-
We are thinking of splitting our e-Commerce site into a Canadian site w/ localized content, a potential French version and for additional relevance w/ localized currency.
What would be the best way to go about this if we were wanting to gain traction as soon as possible on the organic side?
-
Split the domain into domain.com and domain.com/ca/ (subfolders)
-
Split the domain into ca.domain.com and domain.com
-
Or split the domain into domain.com & wirelessemporium.ca
Also, what are some key best practices we need to keep in mind to avoid duplicate content issues, etc?

Hi there,
The best way to enable a new country version --in this case for Canada-- is:
-
Enabling an international Web structure, ideally with a ccTLD for the country, in this case: yourbrand.ca and if this is not possible due to technical or resources restrictions, then do it through a sub-directory under your current generic domain: yourbrand.com/ca/
-
If at some point you need to enable additional language versions for a country, you can extend your structure like this:
-
With ccTLDs:
-
For English: yourbrand.ca
-
For French: yourbrand.ca/fr/
-
With sub-directories:
-
For English: yourbrand.com/ca-en/
-
For French: yourbrand.com/ca-fr/
-
When you use sub-directories you can register them independently in Google Webmaster Tools and geotarget them.
-
You can always (whether ccTLDs or sub-directories) use the hreflang annotations to inform Google about your different pages language and country targeting.
-
Make sure to translate and localize all the information of your pages: From URLs in the appropriate languages, to titles, meta descriptions, headings, text, currency, addresses, etc.
-
Always link between the different country versions through a crawlable menu.
-
Avoid automatic redirects, is far better to suggest the appropriate version as Amazon does here with their Spanish version.
-
Build your new countries versions popularity, targeting locally relevant and authority Websites in your sector there.
Take a look at this International SEO checklist I published some days ago at Moz with the most important steps you need to take for an International SEO process.
I hope this helps!

It's great you haven't jumped in yet as there are pros and cons to each of the three options you have listed. I highly recommend this free webinar here: http://bit.ly/130NsJV - Ezra (from 9th sphere) goes over the potential pros and cons when entering the Canadian market and gives a great example very similar to yours. You could then judge from there.
Best practices obviously depends on which way you go in terms of a subfolder or new domain etc. While some products will inevitably have the same descriptions, you could keep these slightly different by rewriting the descriptions (with Canadian spelling) and have Canadian customers review on the Canadian page (much like how Amazon does it with Amazon.ca).

ciao
if i understand well now you have admin.com, right?
if it's so
it is preferable to add the management of another language type french
and have:
domain.com / fr
and try to index the site in French in the Google.caMaurizio

International SEO - Alternatives to Automatic IP re-direct
Hello, When doing international SEO I've read that it's not good practice to automatically re-direct users to the correct part of the website based on their IP address. But what alternatives are there to this? Let's say you're targeting the US and the UK through multiregional SEO. What can you do to ensure that users from the US go to the US sub-directory and that users from the UK go to the UK sub-directory? In Moz's international SEO guide it says that: "If you choose to try to guess at the user’s language preference when they enter your site, you can use the browser’s language setting or the IP address and ask the user to confirm the choice. Using JavaScript to do this will ensure that Googlebot does not get confused. Pair this with a good XML sitemap and the user can have a great interaction. Plus, the search engines will be able to crawl and index all of your translated content." Can anyone explain this further? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance

Localization best practice
Hi Guys, I have a question about localization versions of my websites. Currently for other languages we use folders like /de/, /es/ and we have implemented hreflang. But it will be in any help if I add all those localization versions in Search Console as separate properties and specify there which language is it for? Can this help more that just leave it as it is? Thanks, Florin

Best process to 301 ecommerce store?
Hi, We have decided to segment our products and languages on to different country tlds. I know how to 301, but I am curious as to how I should actually do this, in what order to do it. Let's call the existing site with all products on OLDsite, and the new tld, where the products will also appear NEWsite. I am thinking of: Setting up NEWsite, but no sitemap. On launch of NEWsite, 301 all products on OLDsite to NEWsite (they will no longer appear on OLDsite) After some time, add sitemap, google verification in GWT, etc... on NEWsite. My thinking is that if I launch NEWsite and notify Google it will index the same products and content as OLDsite, and not necessarily check the 301 right? Which could lead to dupe content issues... Any ideas? We are only redirecting part of the site, so not all of it. Thanks!

SEO rates in Brazil
This question is for SEOs working in Brazil (please feel perfectly free to reply in Portuguese). I am an independent Local Search consultant living and working in France and would like to get an approximate idea of the range of SEO rates charged in Brazil by independent SEOs. As is the case in any country, I'm sure that rates vary significantly in Brazil. My goal is simply to get an idea of that range. Thanks very much. Ken Fagan (www.kenfagan.com)

Best practice for WPML, Yoast and sitemap for google
Hi Mozzers, I have a wordpress installation and work on a hotel website in three different languages: English, German, Spanish. In order to manage each language as a regional or global website, I started to give the website the names like: de.hotelnamen.com, es.hotelname.com (Hotel is in Costa Rica, maybe cr.hotelname.com is even better???) and hotelname.com. The possibility of WPML to manage my multilingual blog is good and the Yoast plugin gives me the sitemaps I want for each language. Because it is a hotel I have to have a global page which should serve the world if they try to find the hotel, right? That's why i put hotelname.com as a global page in English and registered the sitemaps and page on my webmaster account in countries as "not listed". For de.hotelname.com I choose Germany on another webmaster account and for es.hotelname.com Costa Rica (the country in which the Hotel is located). Unfortunately, after three month I don't receive good results with that methode. The hotelname.com adress is always the page which comes up in all search engines. I my tactic wrong? Where is my mistake? I would like to have hotelname.com in the rankings of all search engines beside of google Germany because for the German market I have the German version. Same in Costa Rica. Thanks for some ideas...

Multilingual Ecommerce Product Pages Best Practices
Hi Mozzers, We have a marketplace with 20k+ products, most of which are written in English. At the same time we support several different languages. This changes the chrome of the site (nav, footer, help text, buttons, everything we control) but leaves all the products in their original language. This resulted in all kinds of duplicate content (pages, titles, descriptions) being detected by SEOMoz and GWT. After doing some research we implemented the on page rel="alternate" hreflang="x", seeing as our situation almost perfectly matched the first use case listed by Google on this page http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=189077. This ended up not helping at all. Google still reports duplicate titles and descriptions for thousands of products, months after setting this up. We are thinking about changing to the sitemap implementation rel="alternate" hreflang="X", but are not sure if this will work either. Other options we have considered include noindex or blocks with robots.txt when the product language is not the same as the site language. That way the feature is still open to users while removing the duplicate pages for Google. So I'm asking for input on best practice for getting Google to correctly recognize one product, with 6 different language views of that same product. Can anyone help? Examples: (Site in English, Product in English) http://website.com/products/product-72 (Site in Spanish, Product in English) http://website.com/es/products/product-72 (Site in German, Product in English) http://website.com/de/products/product-72 etc...

Same website in different countries, best practices for SEO?
Hey Guys, I have read several similar questions regarding mine, but none seem to truly cover my question. Basically, we have a company named Junair. We created the website for the company here in Australia (http://www.junair.com.au). As can be seen throughout the page, it mentions that it caters for both Australia and NZ (NZ has its own phone number). It does ok in the rankings at the moment, but rankings will continue to rise in the future once more links are getting picked up. Now however, the Junair team in NZ purchased the NZ domain http://www.junair.co.nz and redirected it to the Australian page. No matter which page you visit on the NZ URL, the URL will never change, and neither will the page title. They have now contacted us and asked to perform SEO on the NZ domain so the NZ domain would show up in searches on Google NZ. At the moment, when searching for "Junair" on google.co.nz, the Australian domain is coming up. How could I change this so the NZ URL would show instead? And what would be the best practices to perform SEO on the NZ URL, should I just create links pointing to http://www.junair.co.nz ? Thank you, Roderic

International SEO whats best 2 sites co.uk and com.au ?
We have the co.uk and com.au ccTLDS and currently operate out of the UK only but plans are in place for Australia. We can't get hold of the .org or .com so it has to be the ccTLD. I want to use the same site for both countries and either host 2 identical sites (same content) or 1 site with different domain names + meta tags for the 2 countries. Whats the best way to make this happen without screwing things up?
