Avoid Keyword Self-Cannibalization. Please Help
-
This has been addressed plenty of times but I cannot find an example that addresses my issue so that is why I am posting this. I am getting the following Self-Cannibalization error for my Homepage and I am trying to fix it but I just don't see it or maybe I do not understand this correctly.
http://fake-diploma.com Keyword Fake Diploma
Cannibalizing link"How to make a fake diploma", "How to get a fake diploma", "Making a Fake High School Diploma", "Fake Diploma Template", and "Framing your fake diploma"
My understanding is that for Self-Cannibalization to occur I would have to have a link on this page pointing to another page using "Fake Diploma" as my anchor text since I want this page to rank for Fake Diploma. I do have the left sidebar which contains my most recent post and my of my titles do include Fake Diploma but I thought that since they were not an Exact Match and are actually longtail keywords that they did not matter or cause Self-Cannibalization. Am I wrong? How do I fix this.

Writing content with the keywords you want to rank is great, but just don't overuse them. There's a thin line between mentioning the keyword and stuffing an article with it. There's been a lot of chatter about the percentage of how many times your keyword should be mentioned within the text, however, I suggest you go with a "user target" in mind. Don't build content for search engines, build it for users!

Hey thanks for the great article. I am definitely going to have to check a few of them out as I have only been using the Google Keyword tool. Maybe I am confused again.
So Fake Diploma is my main keyword. But I also want to rank for some longtail keywords like " Fake College Diploma", "Fake Diploma Generator", "How to make a Fake Diploma" just to name a few. I thought the best way to rank for the longtail keywords was to actually write a post about that keyword and use it in the title as well. But if I am understanding you correctly by doing this it could be considered as keyword stuffing. So how and I supposed to try to rank for the longtails.
Again thank you for your patience and answering my questions.

You are welcome!
We posted an article about a week ago that includes a list of tools you can use to do some keyword research, almost all free: http://www.fulltraffic.net/blog/85067/5-amazingly-effective-ppc-keyword-research-tools/
WordStream's Keyword Niche Finder as a really good choice while ubersuggest will also provide you with lots of ideas. Both offer the option to download the findings. Try researching some long-tail too. Fake diploma is basically the same as "not real diploma", "diploma without classes" and so on.

Federico thank you for your response. I am a Rookie when it comes to SEO and I am trying my best with the information I have been able to track down. I didn't realize that could be considered Keyword Stuffing. I used the Google Keyword Tool and searched Fake Diploma and it gave me 79 related keywords and they all included the phrase Fake Diploma. I figured since Google saw them as separate Keywords I was safe. Unfortunately there are not to many other words to describe a Fake Diploma. Can you offer up any other options or suggestions? Or maybe point me in the right direction.

Roger actually reads the content not as in an exact match but "broad" (I think is called). As long as the link has the text "fake diploma" you are self-cannibalizating the keyword.
However, reading what you posted, I won't suggest using ALWAYS the same keyword, that could be seen as keyword stuffing, which doesn't only lower your rankings but you could get you penalized.
I would diffidently come with some alternatives, do some keyword research on the niche and try to use alternatives, it would help with the self-cannibalization + avoid a keyword stuffing penalty, while opening the possibility to earn traffic from other keywords.

Homepage target keyword less volume than subcategory keyword
As an example - let's say that I have an online store that sells home accessories. Within my store, I have categories like "kitchen accessories", "bedroom accessories", and "bathroom accessories" among others. Naturally I would want my homepage to be the broadest keyword that best describes my store's offering (i.e. "Home Accessories"). Then, on my sub-category page, I would target "Kitchen Accessories". In this example - let's assume "Kitchen Accessories" has more search volume than "Home Accessories". Would it be better to focus on that keyword on my homepage instead? Example Current Homepage Title: "Beautiful Home Accessories - Crate + Feather" Alternate Homepage Title: "Bath, Bedroom, and Kitchen Accessories - Crate + Feather" Which one would you do assuming everything is equal aside from search volume?

Adding keywords to URL's
I understand the importance of having the keyword in the URL (at least now I do). When I created my site (www.enchantingquotes.com), I was completely ignorant about SEO. So....question is...how do I go about adding keywords to already done pages? Do I create a new section and then redirect - or do I have to basically recreate pages? Thx much 🙂

Spammy keywords on a page
My client's website has a box of text on each page that is spammy and horrible to read and stuffed with keywords. The text boxes are there only for search engines as they mean nothing to humans. I say remove them as it must be doing more harm than good. However, my client is scared to remove them as the text has been there on each page for ten years and he is worried about a drop in visitor numbers if they are removed. Is he right to be worried?
