How many keywords?
-
Hi,
I have a client asking if they can target 50-100 keywords.
Has anyone ever heard of this before? In my eyes, 1-7 keywords at any one time is more than enough.
So unless you had a team of 50 people doing the work, is this a reasonable request?
Any advice welcome.
Thanks

I don't think 50-100 KW is that much. I'm rarely targeting less than 30 on a very small site of 20-30 pages, and on an ecomm site, 1000+ KW is nothing out of the ordinary. Resources, as you say, are the governing factor in determining how many KWs you'll be going after simultaneously. I'm usually only focusing on a handful at a time.
-
Yes that's the way I am working. Not committing to too many keywords and defining the project up front.
I'm just strugglin to understand the time involved in each area. I know what it takes me but not sure if I am under selling myself, over selling or not doing enough with the time and resourse I have.
Thanks

Your on-page factors provide relevance to the keyword topic, but it's not what gives your site/page the oomph required to rank above other sites. (It used to be that "keyword dense" pages was all that was needed, which is what led to pages with more keywords than information for the visitor.) Off-site authority building is what lifts your site above other strong competitors.
Part of SEO is understanding where to put your efforts for the best impact with the available time/budge/knowledge resources. To do that, you need to know what the marketing budget is, what the SEO skill level is, what the client goals are, the competitiveness of each potential keyword, the time frame that the client needs to see a return on their investment, and the strength of the page/site being worked on.
For a one man band the more narrowly you define the project and the client's perception, the better off you're going to be--especially early on.
-
Thanks for response.
What I don't get is the time and effort involved in off site backlinking per keyword.
Sure I can make each page keyword dense with great content and images.
But what about the off site stuff? For a one man band I always think it involves too much work to target that many words off site?
-
Indeed. I'll keep you on my short list.
-
"In a competitive space" as you say, is the key factor. : )

Hey there,
To be honest that doesn't sound unreasonable to me. Although I guess that does depend on the site and what they selling, if anything!
By writing good content around each product will soon see you ranking for each individual product.
What is the company? what are they selling? maybe I can help some more if I know more about the project.
Thanks

The initial content creation is the big obstacle for 50-100 keywords (focusing on quality). To do this correctly does require a good amount of resources. Continually monitoring, optimization can be done by a one/couple/few people (it all depends on what kw's/what industry & so on).
-
totally doable, 1-2 keywords per page, so a 50-100 page site can accomplish this. no problem at all
-
Chris, if you can rank for up to 7 keywords on a page in a competitive space I might try to hire you someday.
-
You can setup FAQ pages and an info guide on all the products. The key is to create lots of good quality content and each content piece should be focused on one keyword.
-
In the planning phase, ballpark a page of content optimized on-page and -off for each keyword and one page per product. Your results will differ widely based on a number of criteria. Before moving forward, I recommend digesting the following:
-
Within an e-commerce setting how would you equate that?
Say I have hundreds of different products and want to target 50 of them?
If I have armani jeans, slim fit, straight fit, boot fit etc.. all different products. How do I target 7 for one product? Or would I target 1 for 1 product but then say 50 different products?
In your experience how many hours would you say you put into targeting a keyword?
Thanks
-
Sure, it's possible, just not for one page. 1-7 keywords per page is a good estimate, but perhaps a bit high but a site can target hundreds, even thousands or tens of thousands with enough pages and enough effort. And your right, the more keywords being targeted the more man hours will have to be put into it.

Broad keyword use
It seems that the broad keyword use is not very accurate. I have 3 very similar keywords: Dive Florida, scuba diving in Florida, Florida scuba diving. Why does the program not recognise them as broad usage when assessing the page title? And if the program cannot understand broad usage terms, how confident can we be that the program can properly measure for keyword stuffing?

Whitehat site suffering from drastic & negative Keyword/Phrase Shifts out of the blue!
I am the developer for a fairly active website in the education sector that offers around 30 courses and has quite an actively published blog a few times a week and social profiles. The blog doesn't have comments enabled and the type of visitor that visits is usually looking for lessons or a course. Over the past year we have had an active input in terms of development to keep the site up to date, fast and following modern best practises. IE SSL certificates, quality content, relevant and high powered backlinks ect... Around a month ago we got hit by quite a large drop in our ranked keywords / phrases which shocked us somewhat.. we attributed it to googles algorithm change dirtying the waters as it did settle up a couple of weeks later. However this week we have been smashed again by another large change dropping almost 100 keywords some very large positions. My question is quite simple(I wish)... What gives? I don't expect to see drops this large from not doing anything negative and I'm unsure it's an algorithm change as my other clients on Moz don't seem to have suffered either so it's either isolated to this target area or it's an issue with something occurring to or on the site? Keyword + Location domains
Hi All, Just wanted to get everyones opinions on this, I see it more and more now where businesses own multiple domains for [keyword] + [location], they have multiple domains for different locations and setup individual sites on them. I see these types of domains rank very easily for medium competition keywords, as long as the on page is good and there are a handful of back links, they rank. just to clarify, for example - iphonerepairmanchester.co.uk (purely an example not sure how this site ranks!!) What are Googles views on this? I've always insisted its better to build a strong brand with the "real" business rather than creating extra websites named by keywords. But I've recently had a client want to pursue this and it seems it currently works, but is there a danger down the line Google will penalise it? The short term traffic increase is undeniable but like anything in the world of Google at the moment, I'd rather persuade clients not to go this route if it will protect future interests.

Content optimized for old keywords and G Updates
Hi, We've got some old content, about 50 pages worth in an Ecommerce site, that is optimized for keywords that aren't the subject of the page - these keywords occur about 8 times (2 keywords per page) in the old content. We are going through these 50 pages and changing the title, H1, and meta description tag to match the exact subject of the page - so that we will increase in rankings again - the updates have been lowering our rankings. Do we need to completely rewrite the content for these 50 pages, or can we just sprinkle it with any needed additions of the one keyword that is the subject of the page? The reason I'm asking is that our rankings keep dropping and these 50 pages seem to be part of the problem. We're in the process of updating these 50 pages Thanks.

Best method to target similar keywords??
Hi Guys, We have client that wants to target 3 similar terms (used, secondhand and pre-owned) variations. We have been having a discussion about the different methods to try but can't make a decision on the best route. The target page has a list of pre-owned products so whichever route was take these products still need to be visible without creating duplicate content issues.... 1 - Go all in on one page do our best at optimising a single page for all 3. - i don't like this route.
White Hat / Black Hat SEO | | Kal-SEO
2 - Stick with the current pre-owned url and create a url for used and secondhand with a 301 redirect back to the pre-owned url.
3 - Create three individual pages aimed at a keyword individually, keep the pre-owned as the original and add canonical links to used and secondhand I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
Thanks in advanced0 -
Please Help- Confusion about how to Avoid Keyword Self-Cannibalization and Keyword Stuffing
I am pretty much a rookie when it comes to the SEO game and to be completely honest SEO is really confusing. I just recently started using MOZ and I was looking at my On-Page report and I saw that I needed to correct some “Avoid Keyword Self-Cannibalization” errors. So I looked at the error and the fix. Here is what MOZ gave me. Cannibalizing link "How to make a fake diploma", "How to get a fake diploma", "Making a Fake High School Diploma", "Fake Diploma Template", and "Framing your fake diploma" Explanation It's a best practice in SEO to target each keyword with a single page on your site (sometimes two if you've already achieved high rankings and are seeking a second, indented listing). To prevent engines from potentially seeing a signal that this page is not the intended ranking target and creating additional competition for your page, we suggest staying away from linking internally to another page with the target keyword(s) as the exact anchor text. Note that using modified versions is sometimes fine (for example, if this page targeted the word 'elephants', using 'baby elephants' in anchor text would be just fine). Recommendation Unless there is intent to rank multiple pages for the target keyword, it may be wise to modify the anchor text of this link so it is not an exact match. This error is for my Hompage(http://www.fake-diploma.com) for the keyword Fake Diploma. My understanding is that for Self-Cannibalization to occur I would have to have a link on this page pointing to another page using "Fake Diploma" as my anchor text since I want this page to rank for Fake Diploma. I do have the right hand sidebar which contains my most recent posts and some of my titles do include Fake Diploma. How to make a Fake Diploma

Fake Diploma Template
Framing your Fake Diploma
To me theses are separate longtail keywords. While they do include Fake Diploma in them I thought theses were fine because they are not an Exact Match to each other nor are they an Exact Match to “Fake Diploma”. Am I wrong about this? Secondly I reached out on another Forum trying to get a better understanding of this and just got even more confused. I was told that I am also Keyword Stuffing and could be penalized. They said because I have Fake Diploma in most of my article titles that I am Stuffing Fake Diploma. I am in a Niche Market and of course most of my titles include Fake Diploma because that is what my entire site is about. I used the Google Keyword Tool and searched Fake Diploma and it gave me a list of about 79 related keywords like: Make a Fake Diploma Online
Create a Fake Diploma
Fake Diploma Software This is just a few of the many that I have. I thought the best way to rank for a keyword was to actually write a post about that Keyword and use it as the title of the article. I am not over using the Keyword in the actual article and I maybe have a Keyword density of about 2-5%. I thought Keyword Stuffing was where you actually used the Keyword like 50 times and also just added random Keywords to the article that did not belong. Please help me with any insights you can offer. I feel like I am doing all of this completely wrong.0 -
Keywords in Google Local results
We have a client in the moving business and I'm absolutely flabbergasted by the "local" results and the number of them that are not following Google's guidelines for Google Local accounts. 3 of them are using exact match keyword strings as their company names. I've reported all 3, every week for the last 2 months and have not seen a single dip in the rankings. Meanwhile our client has a duplicate listing we've verified and "suspended" and it hasn't changed for 4 months! Any tips? I've attached a photo of the listings as well. xwWZWyT.gif
