How to Build SEO Focused Pages?
-
Your help please as with so much kicking around about what is best practice us poor novices havent got a chance to keep up!
My site www.over50choices.co.uk focuses on personal finance for the over 50s and one of the product sets is Funerals: I have c40 pages on the subject and 25 pages with the word "funeral" (eg funeral plans, how to arrange a funeral, funeral directors, funeral planning etc) in the URL, Title & H1 Tag - individually each page explains specific elements of the "process" and solutions to them eg purchasing a "prepaid funeral plan" all of which were optimised for specific Keywords (because thats what i was advised was best practice 6 months ago).
Am I correct in thinking that in the new world ie post Hummingbird et al, that a better strategy is to use the "product home page" as the core landing page, with sufficient content to summarise what's on offer, covering all of the individual subjects from each pages in an umbrella/topic kind of way?
And to still retain the linked pages from the core landing page, as they will contain the detailed information?
Many thanks
Ash

Thanks Rand I really appreciate your response - I feel a site overhaul is imminent!

Hi Ash - I'd generally think about this from the perspective of searcher intent. For example, if the intent of most searchers querying a keyword like "funeral plans" is to learn more about how to arrange a funeral , then it's fine to target both query terms on a single page and make the title something that captures both targets. However, when there's less overlap and the searcher is seeking more specific information (e.g. a query like "prepaid funeral plans" may be looking to compare services, prices, understand what's included, what might be out-of-pocket, etc), then an individual page targeting that term/phrase/intent is wise.
I think you nailed it with the concept of a core product page with a good overview that then links to additional resources going into more depth.

Long tail seo
Hi, I watched a video about long tail seo and it was mentioned there that finding keywords that have 0-10 search volume or no data at all may potentially have super high value for your specific business. Since opportunity score will tend to be high because there’s minimal searches or no data at all, the trick is to check the top 10 SERPs and if none of the 10 used your keyword then you may have found yourself a great long tail seo opportunity. Could anyone please clarify why that would be a great long tail seo opportunity? Thank you. -Michelle

Google AMP Cache - Does Google just crawl AMP pages and add them to their Google AMP Cache?
Is that all one needs to do to get AMP pages on Google's AMP Cache or is there more to it than that?

On Page Optimisation - Do I stick or twist?
Hi Guys My site was launched in June 2013, with approx 6 pages for each section eg, funeral planning, annuities, insurance etc - we have not achieved page 1 in SERPs but many page 2's & 3's. On average each page has between 200 to 300 words, with images, using the funeral planning section as an example the page headers are: funeral planning (introduces what it is eg prepaid funeral plans, writing a Will, inheritance tax planning) funeral plans (what is a prepaid funeral plan & the benefits) why buy a funeral plan (reasons to buy) funeral costs (rising costs of funerals & plans) buying a funeral plan online (why buying online is easier than visiting the funeral directors) compare funeral plans (compare prepaid funeral plan providers options) We decided at the outset to go for more pages rather than 1 or 2 pages with 600 to 1000 words on as we thought from a customer experience perspective that the information would be easier to see & with an older audience the headers would educate them & make them more confident to buy online. And clustering the pages & linking them together we thought google would recognise this! However, from everything i have recently read we may achieve better SERPs if we combine pages, to remove the obvious "funeral plan" keyword overlap & longer pages may achieve better "topic" value with google (as per Rands recent WBF)? So we are at a crossroads - do we give it longer for the original plan & hope that we pop up in SERPs page 1 or bite the bullet, create one page per section/topic & find a way to display the content in user friendly way? The latter is of course major surgery to the site, but if there is sufficient long term value I will swallow hard & do it! Thoughts? Ash

Threatening SEO practice
Hi all, We have just taken on a site that has had SEO done for 3 years by a different company, but now that company is threatening the client to ruin their site with bad links, and get their site banned. I understand through Webmaster tools that you can monitor backlinks, and file a reconsideration request, but is there any other non-time consuming way of stopping this to start with? Hope someone can shine some light on the very unprofessional practice Thanks Neil

Temporary landing pages and SEO
Hi guys! I have a question that has been running through my mind for quite a while now. On our company, we offer different products that we put on specific landing pages (one per product). This products are "live" on a 20 day period. Right now, when the product expires, we put a label "This product expired" and return a 404. Is this the right way to do it? Take into account that keeping the page "alive" is not an option. The options would be: 301 redirecting to another listing (should I worry about this implementation being wrong? Wouldn't Google find it suspicous that lots of pages redirect to the same listing?) Return a 200 instead Thanks for your time!

Connecting SEO with Your Clients Objectives
Hi Guys, This question is specifically towards trying to make the connection between achieving clients objectives based on your SEO initiatives. Google Universal SERP's tends to make me try to think towards devising more of an online strategy rather than a specific SEO strategy. Whilst obviously social, video, content marketing and all that is increasingly important channels. I think it makes our actions based on trends rather than what matters most for the site to be visible - gain traffic & links (but not limited to this). Questions: 1. What framework or thought process do you use when devising a tailored SEO strategy for your clients? 2. How do you translate all onsite SEO initiatives off-site? I know there is no one fits all answer, however I would truly like to seek the SEO experts out here. Please use your example (not mine) as I think it will best help you answer this question. Note: No reference to the digital marketing framework by Avinash, I am already familiar with this. I have also not made this as a discussion, as I would truly like to get feedback from successful SEO's. Thank you for your answers in advance, Vahe

Are Creating Free WordPress and Joomla Themes a good link building strategy?
Hello Everyone, I have been analyzing various link building strategies recently. One tactic that always seems to come up is to give stuff away. I wanted to get everyones thoughts on creating Wordpress and Joomla Themes, then giving them away as a link building strategy? The goal would be to create some stellar themes, then place our website link in the footer with some text that would read "Wordpress Theme by Pete Juratovic" and Pete Juratovic would point to my website. Is this a good tactic, or would this look like spam? If spam, why? Why would this tactic be any different then creating a great infographic as a link building stratedgy? Pete
