Guest post prospecting
-
Am currently struggling with the link prospecting process for guest blogging.
Right now, I've been using link prospector or just plain old Google to do link prospecting, However, this can be a really tedious process and finding the right opportunities to pursue for outreach seems to be like finding a needle in a haystack.
Is there anyway in which to make this process much, much more easy and efficient, so that high quality and relevant opportunities can be found in quick timing?
Also open to tips/advice on a completely different approach, for example trying out guest blog networks (e.g http://myblogguest.com) or something similar to attain sound opportunities.
Much appreciated!

Thanks everyone who has contributed to answering this question of mine.
Samuel, great article and something that definitely makes us think what we are doing to better improve our PR for sites.
Thanks Jane for your comments and making clear the possibilities as too recommendations of routes to go down!

Hi,
Samuel is correct that Google has announced a crack down on links they have reason to believe were posted in guest blogged articles for the sole purpose of gaining links. There has been a lot of debate about whether they really have the ability to detect this if it is done very well, but one key indicator of guest posting being a main tactic employed by a website is if a majority of the site's links are from blog posts. This is especially true if a number of these posts have "guest", "sponsored", etc. in the header or footer or the articles.
Writing for others' sites can still be done well, and I know some companies are very good at scaling lead generation for potential posts / links (most of this is proprietary technology). In the long run, Samuel makes a good point that the safest route (especially for SMBs) is to focus on awareness from a PR angle and enjoying the links that come from it, rather than chasing guest post opportunities.

Sam nailed it completely!
If you are putting too much effort in guest blogging for the sole purpose of getting links, you should stop right away and consider shifting to Sam’s suggestions.
If link is not the only purposes and you are aware of all the real benefits of guest blogging then I believe investing time on publication is way better because it will take your less time and give you more readerships.
Hope this helps!

First, I'd forget about doing guest blogging for the sole purpose of gaining links. Matt Cutts, Google's head of web spam, told us in clear terms that online marketers should stop doing this. (I'd add that people should not have been doing this in the first place.)
Rather, I'd focus on contributing to online publications for the purpose of increasing awareness and coverage of your company, website, product, and/or service among a specific, targeted audience. Don't worry about the links. They'll come naturally themselves as long as you do online PR in the right way.
For more, I'd suggest looking at my Moz post on the topic: http://moz.com/blog/an-introduction-to-pr-strategy-for-seos
In short, I'd focus on the websites from whom you would want links even if Google did not exist.

Where to promote a blog post?
I want to promote a blog post with the littlest invested time. It's not something I need to get ranked high. Just wondering what is the most efficient method or service to broadcast it out there with at least some chance of driving some traffic (other than "just let Google index it") 😉

Would a lot of images on one post be categorized as thin content?
As an example, if i write an article on 12 best print ads by BMW, it will have 12 images and possible 12 single liners and a paragraph. The images will have the necessary alt tags. But overall, will this post be counted as low content and is there changes of being penalized by google for it?

How Are You Handling Blog Posts/Author Pages when Employees Leave the Company?
What do you believe to be the best approach in handling blog content for employees once they have left the company? We don’t want to remove the blog posts so they need to stay, but then there are the author pages. This gets tricky because the CMS ties the blog post to the author. One approach might be to change the author’s name to the Company’s name to get around author pages for people no longer with the company. It’s kind of tricky because the blog posts won’t have the same credibility if they don’t have a person’s name/photo associated with the post. We could leave the blogger’s page and list him as a “Contributing Author” once he’s left the company. Thoughts?

Could posting on YouMoz get you penalized for "Guest Blogging?"
From my understanding, Matt Cutts hates guest blogging, so I told all of the attorneys here not to write anywhere but on our blog. However, I realized people are constantly "guest blogging' on Moz, and considering how smart these people are, it must not be hurting them or they wouldn't do it. However, what I don't understand is why? Yes, I do get that the quality of what's on YouMoz is high and not spammy, but I got the impression that didn't really matter. Guest blogging would get you into trouble no matter what. Can someone clarify for me? Thanks, Ruben

Rewrite of blog posts
I have to admit. Sometimes, when i write a blog post, I'm a bit lazy. I don't concentrate on the on page optimization portion of the blog post. I used to. But, as of late, I haven't. I was wondering if it was worth it to tweak my blog posts just a bit with a few keywords to improve my on page optimization. Or, do you think that it is too late and not worth the trouble.

Show all VS show excerpt in a blog post
I saw that you recently changed your blog from "show all" to "show an excerpt" and then "read more", could you explain me the reason? It´s not supossed to be better for the blog readers to see the full posts in the homepage?

Best strategy for content/articles. Individual pages or blog posts?
Hi all, Whilst adding content to one of my sites quite often I'm left deciding whether I should create an individual webpage for the content, or write it up as another blog post. More often I write it up as a static page so it fits in with the rest of my website more 'directly'. However I'm wondering if I'm missing out here as obviously I'm not taking advantage of the benefits of a blog, RSS, Tag Cloud, etc etc... Just wondering if others encounter the same quandary?
