Transfer Blog From External Domain
-
Hi All
I am in stages of transferring a blog. We currently have partial manual penalty for unnatural links, and we received sample links of our own blog, which happened to be originally setup on another domain. e.g. example.co.uk and the blogs hosted on exampleblog.co.uk - the only way these were linked were through anchor text in each and every blog - so it's clear why this has been picked up. We are now going to transfer these across to our actual domain.
Around 60% of the blogs had no meat, so we have pruned through these. What is the best solution;
Redirecting ONLY the good blogs via 301 Redirect and 404 pages with no meat
OR
Redirecting ONLY the good blogs via 301 Redirect the others to Example.co.uk/Blogs
Thanks
Tom

Hey Tom,
Can you confirm that there has been no penalty on your blog domain? If not, you should be careful because penalties are known to hop 301s and JohnMu recently revealed that penalties will follow content without a 301.
That said I would prioritize what you redirect based on what has links and shares. There's no reason to set up redirects for page that no one is visiting or linking to. Go with your first option, but 410 them to get them out of the index faster.

Hi Tom,
I would not advise taking the second option. You only want to redirect when there is a situation where the 301 takes someone to a logical place (similar / same page elsewhere), rather than lots of random ones pointing to a single page.
Your first option is the logical route.

Old Blog Posts
Every single day we publish articles that have a high amount of engagement onsite 50-300 comments. We have been running for around 8 years now and have a rather bloated database of old stale posts. We post advice on betting on sports. Not guides as such but tips for events. After the event has started the posts are outdated. What is your advice for these? These articles are not seen as "thin" but rather outdated. There is no way possible for me to update the content as such. Also out right deleting the content would go against our openness and transparency of past selections advised.

.com vs .co.uk domain
I have a client who has a site live at example**.co.uk** and would like to rank for the term "example". But example**.com** is owned by another company who offers a different product and service and has been live since 2003. I know that I can make example**.co.uk** rank for keywords related to their service but I think it's going to be a struggle to get them to rank for the brand term "example" as the .com site already owns Page 1 with their domain name, Facebook page, Wiki page etc etc. The only variation is that example**.com** is a US based company and my client want to ranks in the UK only. What are the chances I can out rank example**.com** for the brand term on www.google.co.uk if example**.com** currently owns Page 1 on google**.co.uk**?

Duplicate Content: Snippets from Blog on Website
Our company has a website and a blog, each on a separate domain. On our website's home page, we include snippets from some of our blog posts and links to such posts. The snippets include the same photo, title, and first line or so of text. We have been told and am concerned that search engines will categorize this as duplicate content. Any recommendation as to how we can get around this issue aside from not including the blog posts on our site? I imagine we are not the first company to want to do this. www.angelicolaw.com Thanks,

Redirecting a Parked Domain
A client's friend has had a parked domain for over 11 years. He has done nothing with it but throw a couple of ads on it. It has some traffic, most likely from typos: the domain domain is somewhat similar to a leading search engine. But the parked domain has no content, no links, no DA. I can't see the benefit of the redirect. My client might get a little traffic -- but the parked domain has nothing to do with his niche. Am I missing something? Is there any risk involved in the redirect (beyond unqualified traffic that isn't valuable?)

Www1 and www domain
hi, I have a client who has an e-commerce business. My client does not want to fill the pages with too much content and has set up a www1 version with the same domain-name as the www. The plan is to create a lot of content and push www1 in ranking and then sending users (via links) to the www for ordering. Although there will be no duplicate content published on www and www1 this seems like an odd strategy, especially since the www already has a good page rank, and I'm not sure about how engines view a www.domain.com and www1domain.com situation even with unique content in each. Any thoughts?
