Domain authority dropped a lot in last month
-
I thought I'd asked this earlier but it seems to have disappeared. My client's domain authority has hovered at around 42-46 for the past 6 months. But in the past month it has dropped 6 points. Organic search traffic is up, no keyword rankings have fallen, external links are up slightly, but not massively. Competitors remain roughly the same DA although theirs are only around 14/16 anyway. What should I be looking for as to the cause?

Hi Maureen relating to what Keri was referring to on DA doing down. I see on my main site that for August in OSE my DA has dropped a couple of points but so have all the competitors I measure against. My KPIs such as lead generation, inbound inquiries etc. have not dipped as a consequence.
Like Thomas comments I tend to see subtle impacts on my site's SERPs when comparing tools such as MOZCAST but that is more a short term issue and generally they resolve upwards over the longer term - which is a better metric.

Thanks for those urls Thomas, I wasn't aware of the serps.com one, it looks very useful.

Thanks for your answer Egol, I was thinking that there must be something I was missing, but your answer tells me our team is doing the right stuff for this website - I guess I need to set a client's expectations better as well so that he doesn't look at this drop and start asking "what's gone wrong?" as the answer is probably "nothing". Bit of an education job to do there I think as clients tend to think that a drop in numbers is a bad thing and they usually only notice when the number falls but never when the number goes up!

hi I want to tell you I could not agree more with what EGOL has stated if you are not losing traffic and your conversions more importantly are staying up there regular domain fluctuation is normal and nothing to worry about unless it gets very serious.
You can utilize tools like MozCast as well as SERPS to figure out if it is just Google making minor changes that don't really affect your business or if it is something more serious. If you were to tell me you dropped down to a 25 I would be worried however as EGOL said much better than I can normal fluctuation is nothing to worry about and it is a normal thing.
Here are the links to the tools if you want to utilize them.

Measured response: These metrics have a lot of flux. If you are tracking personal progress I think that they are best viewed as a "long term moving average". If you are using them for competitive metrics they are like hefting a rock in each hand to get a sense of which weighs more.
Personal opinion: It's OK to spend a "moment a month" to look at these numbers but don't worry about month-to-month flux. If you have a problem your traffic. rankings and income are more sensitive and meaningful metrics.
Organic search traffic is up, no keyword rankings have fallen, external links are up slightly, but not massively.
Great work! Do more of what made these happen. These are better metrics of success. Better still would be ad income, sales, leads, etc.

Domain Authority is mainly based on what quality links you get for your site from which pages during what time spam.
MOZ WHITEBOARD FIRDAY gives you more information about it.Regarding this question last update we all goes down.
6 points drop.Sit and think of just building some quality backlinks. Link tier and guest blogging with good infographics are good idea in my view.

Should I remove 'local' landing pages? Could these be the cause of traffic drop (duplicate content)?
I have a site that has most of it's traffic from reasonably competitive keywords each with their own landing page. In order to gain more traffic I also created landing pages for counties in the UK and then towns within each county. Each county has around 12 towns landing pages within the county. This has meant I've added around 200 extra pages to my site in order to try and generate more traffic from long tail keywords. I think this may have caused an issue in that it's impossible for me to create unique content for each town/country and therefore I took a 'shortcut' buy creating unique content for each county and used the same content for the towns within it meaning I have lots of pages with the same content just slightly different page titles with a variation on town name. I've duplicated this over about 15 counties meaning I have around 200 pages with only about 15 actual unique pages within them. I think this may actually be harming my site. These pages have been indexed for about a year an I noticed about 6 months ago a drop in traffic by about 50%. Having looked at my analytics this town and county pages actually only account for about 10% of traffic. My question is should I remove these pages and by doing so should I expect an increase in traffic again?

Agency Domain Authority Boosting Activity
Hi Guys Have been reading up a bit on methods for boosting Domain Authority and am generally finding that the best way is by producing unique and relevant content through blogs and other kinds of articles. Having multiple clients in an agency means that there is limited time for this and I need something else to assist in boosting Domain Authority. I perform a fair bit of backlinking through online directories, however I am also finding that most blog comment sections have implemented 'no follow' codes to reduce spam content. There are plenty of free online directories, and many with high Domain Authorities, however they can take up to months for the listings to be approved. I am performing other activities to boost keyword rankings in Google for our clients but need some help with getting their Domain Authority up. Does anyone know of an efficient method for boosting Domain Authority for an agency with many clients where blog writing for each may not be a viable option? Would be great to hear anyone's ideas!

Can you canonical from one domain page to a different domain page
We are a boating site and have our main site with all it's products. We have an engine section within our main site. But we also have an outside domain, specific to a certain manufacturer of engines. So we want our customers to still find the engine information for this manufacturer within our main site, as well as find the manufacturer targeted engine site in the SERPS. My question is this: Can I canonical those pages within our main site to pages on the outside domain? Or does are canonicals to be used only within the same domain? Thanks,

On Site Problem Caused Rankings To Drop?
I'm getting to the bottom of why my site dropped rankings on the 9th March. I noticed that in google there is a cached version of my site on 9th March at 8.37am which is when my rankings dissapeared. Presumably this is when google last crawled my site? I guess this means that google found something on the home page or on the site that it didn't like? I wonder if anyone can take a look and let me know if there's anything obvious. Could it be a duplicate content penalty as I have lots of categories pulling content from the same posts?

Rebranding and Domain Name Changes
Hi All, One of my clients wants to rebrand http://indiaretailnews.com/ so that it's clear that the site is under the operational umbrella of http://tradebriefs.com/. indiaretailnews.com has a lower domain authority of 20, but because of the domain name it ranks number #2 for the keyword "retail news" for Google India. The client's question: Can we change the site names to TradeBriefsRetail.com orTradeBriefsIndiaRetail.com without affecting the SEO on each site? How do we do this – redirect from TradeBriefsIndiaRetail.com to IndiaRetailNews.com and so on or simply put all the content on the new sites and get rid of the old domains or some other way? Do long domain names cause a problem? Another option is TradeBriefsRetail.in, etc with the domain extension showing the country that the content is for.. In a year or two, we will be expanding to markets outside India. My opinion: Keep the old domains and redirect to something like http://tradebriefs.com/india-retail-news Or perhaps a subdomain: http://indiaretailnews.tradebriefs.com In the short term, I'd imagine rankings will drop, but if we wanted to consolidate domain authority, I was thinking that http://tradebriefs.com/india-retail-news would be the best bet. Thoughts? Kenji
