Ok. I'm just going to cut loose with my stupid question. What is internal link equity? What distinguishes an internal link with equity from one without equity?

What distinguishes an internal link with equity from one without equity? Is there a limit to how many of these I want? What's the rule-of-thumb?
Cheers,
Wes

Hi Evan:
My apologies for the slow response. Thanks for the simple explanation and for the link. That is the most thorough explanation of links that i've found. Much appreciated.

Hey Wes,
There are diminishing returns, especially if you have many links on a given page. If you think of a page's authority as a pie, the more pieces you slice the pie into (being the more links you have on a page) the linking page will receive a smaller piece of that pie (passed authority).
If you are trying to sort what is important vs what is not, it is important to thing of why links are important. Links are how bots crawl the web. Internal links are important because they help bots crawl your website, and find the content that is important.
*Note: there is a lot more to be said about this. Here is a good article for you: http://moz.com/learn/seo/internal-link

Hi Evan:
Thanks very much for your note. That makes sense. I assume there's a point of diminishing returns where an excess of internal linking works against you. I see a lot of companies where most of their links are internal. If you have a few hundred internal links with equity, is that really significant in terms of boosting your DA or your ranking? There are so many measurements I'm trying to sort out what is significant and what is not.
Thanks very much.

Also, I might add that there are no stupid questions on Moz

Internal link equity refers to the "link juice" passed internally (on your domain) when you link within your own site. If you have links that are set as nofollow, they will not pass link equity.
If you have a FOLLOW link, then it will pass some link equity. If you have pages that have more links, or are more authoritative on your site, they will pass more link equity than pages that are buried deep within your site.
I hope that this helps. It is a quick answer, but let me know if you have any further questions.

More 'New users' than 'Users' in Google Analytics
Hey Mozzers, I'm seeing more 'New users' than 'Users' in Google Analytics (see screenshot). This is over a 3 year time period. Any idea why new users would be greater than users? Thanks! 6lYmU0j

Migrated website but Google Analytics still displays old URL's and none new?!
I migrated a website from a .aspx to a .php and hence had to 301 all the old urls to the new php ones. It's been months after and I'm not seeing any of the php pages showing results but I'm still getting results from the old .aspx pages. Has any one had any experience with this issue or knows what to do? Many thanks,

Why would our client's site be receiving significant levels of organic traffic for a keyword they do not rank for?
We have a client that has received 100+ organic visits for the keyword 'airport transfers', yet the site does not rank in the top 100 search results for this keyword. We have checked that it is not untagged PPC traffic. Truly baffling. Can anybody help?

Google Analytics Organic search queries aren't being updated, even though I'm still seeing results in all our typical results pages.
We pushed some new changes to the site and Google Analytics is no longer updating the Organic Search queries listing, even though traffic is consistent and and we're still landing results in all our typical keyword searches. Any ideas?

Too Many On-Page Links
I'm getting the warning of "Too many on-page links". I have a number of affiliate marketing sites, all Wordpress, all with sidebars. In the header navigation bar is a link that offers "reviews" and links to each product/brand. This is not a drop down link but leads to a page with product links. Also, in the sidebar I have links that also lead to the products/brands. Redundant yes, but in the beginning this seemed to be a good practice in site design. It would be easy to simply remove the widget that contains the link process in the sidebar. The problem may simply be that the sidebar is the same for every page in the site(s). Is this hurting total SEO as my sites are all over 95-percent indexed. One site in particular does very well in traffic and sales so is removing these links potentially going to improve my SEO and ultimately by success? Thanks, Don
