Wordpress Site Structure and H1 Tags
-
We are working on optimizing a client's website and asked the client's webmaster to change a handful of H1 tags. The webmaster said they could not do to the existing names being pre-set in the design.
The website is built in Wordpress. The client has repeating H1 tags due to the 'design'. I have attached a snapshot of the backend.
Is there a rule around Wordpress site structure where this doesn't happen? Is it worth changing? If so,what is the best solution.
Thank you ahead of time.

Gotcha. With a "normal" WordPress install it should be pretty easy to make a change to the
tags. You just go into the editor and find the right .php file(s).
Are you by chance running Thesis or Genesis? I know it can be trickier with those platforms.
If not, it sounds like an issue with how this specific theme or customization was done. Because normally it should be pretty straightforward.

Web designer said she can't change out the H1 tags due to the layout of the website. Looking at the backend, I see pages, subpages and sub-subpages - I just wondered if there was some rule-of-thumb in laying out a Wordpress site whereupon a person didn't stack pages like this to avoid this problem of if it was simply a theme issue.

Hi Pamela
I wrote a whole answer, and then realized I should ask for some clarification
Do you mean;
A) The H1 tags are in the right place, you just want to be able to individually edit what's in them on a post by post or page by page basis?
B) You are getting H1 tags in wrong places, multiples per page etc and need to get to the underlying code to change where the
tags are being used to begin with?
Or both?

Thank you - I will bring up a theme change. I just didn't know if the structure of how you lay out your website and how subpages and pages under subpages affected SEO. What is the best practice for this?
-
This is very common in Wordpress. Have them change the template, and if they want it to still look the same then just call the style as a class.

HI,
If you have access to the backend, I would say to try a couple of things:
1 - If you are using a theme, many times I have found even with my own theme that I got from theme fusion is that the pages titles are also the H1 tags. So to counter this, while still on whatever page you have open, scroll down to the page options. So like options where you can change default sidebars, maybe author etc. You have have an options that says something like Page Title Bar Options.
This is a way to override whatever H1 tag you may have going on if your page title is showing up as the main H1 tag also.
2 - If you are using Yoast, this may also be adding h1 tags for you.
3 - You may check to see if you have <title>type coding or functions. Maybe even shortcodes adding h1 tags. I would say if you View your source code for a page, you can pinpoint where the H1 tags are going up so that you can know where to look on your pages.</p> <p>I am not sure if you want, I am no pro, but if you tell me your website I can view the source code too and tell you where the h1 tags are.</p> <p>Best Wishes</p> <p>Chris</p></title>

May open the site's homepage...?
In mobile search results, many of my inner pages show the title tag, but the link is removed. And instead of showing the meta description, there is the following: May open the site's homepage

Try anyway | Learn more Both "Try Anyway" and "Learn more" are links. Try anyway used to link to the homepage, but after we removed a redirect plugin and got rid of all the html mobile pages (now we're just using the Wordpress responsive layout), the link is now going to the correct page. So, it in fact, does NOT "open the site's homepage" any longer. But, we're still seeing this on mobile searches for our inner pages. It's been almost 3 weeks now. Any ideas on how to get this back to normal?0 -
Managing website content/keywords for wordpress site
We are in the midst of redesigning our website and have been working with freelance blog/content writers to increase the unique content on our site. We are finding it increasingly difficult to manage the topics/keywords as we continue to expand. Googledrive and google spreadsheets have been our primary tools thus far. Can anyone recommend a good tool that would allow us to manage content and blog posts for our site?

Spaces at beginning of title tag - negatively affect the optimization of the page?
For some reason, our title tags have a long space after the beginning title tag and before the text appears. The beginning title tag is on one line, then a break, a tab and then the content of the title tag. I'm pretty sure this is not good and is affecting optimization of the page. Am I correct or is this not an issue and does not need to be fixed? Example: | <title></span></p> <p> </p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td class="line-number"> </td> <td class="line-content"> First keyword</td> </tr> </tbody> </table></title> |

Mobile Sitemap for Site with Media Queries
I'm doing SEO for a site. It uses Media Queries and the CSS to automatically resize the site for the screen size in use. I.e. the site detects the screen size of say an iPhone and the CSS knows which elements to hide for that screen size and still make it look good. This is great because it will automatically cut down the content to display nicely on small screens - obviating the need for a separate mobile site. What kind of sitemap should be generated since the urls are for desktop and mobile use? Yoast (sweet SEO) said it should have both regular and mobile style sitemap to get both the regular and mobile bots to visit, but didn't elaborate on how that sitemap should look. Do you have a recommendation for how exactly the sitemap should look? Should the sitemap have the urls all twice, i.e. once regular and once with the mobile indicator?

What is wrong with our site?
Hello Seomoz friends. I've about to pull all my hair out and need to turn somewhere. Our site, www.sightmax.com has been around since 2004. We used to be ranked at the top of page two on google under the keyword "live chat". We are no on page 4, heading to page 5. Can anyone take a look at the site and see if anything jumps out at you? The only way we have been able to get on the first page, is the pay for google adwords (which we've been doing every month for 7 years). Again, the site www.sightmax.com and the keyword is "live chat". Any help or feedback would be appreciated SO MUCH! Thanks! Eric
