Newsletter Optimization Help - Anyone know someone?
-
Hi Moz'ers!
I am looking for some help and possibly a referral. My organization has a massive newsletter, 180k subscribers but the performance of the newsletter has been decreasing over the past couple of years with a really poor CTR. I am looking for someone to help optimize and provide recommendation on how we can better the newsletter performance again.
We are in the international education and travel business, primary audience is college students within the US/UK/AUS.
If anyone has a recommendation of an agency or consultant specializing in newsletters optimization, that would be amaze-balls!

Some good responses already. I would add that if you're not already segmenting your audience then you definitely should be to make sure you're measuring the 'real' performance. For example, if in your 180k subscriber list, you have 90k people who haven't placed an order in 90 days and 10k customers who order with you every month then your open rates within the 'engaged' proportion of users will be swamped by the staleness of the rest of the list. Subscriber lists grow with growing businesses, and naturally develop dead wood so churning out the same sorts of emails means the stats can gradually over time decline.
You can combat this by (very simply) segmenting your 'active' base from your inactive base - by all means send them the same email but track their stats separately. Then when you start to invest in your emails, you'll be able to see if your active base are affected, rather than them all being lumped together with any increases/decreases in the performance of key sections of your customer base being concealed.
Finally in terms of email performance, I would use CTR/open rate purely as informative, because really it's revenue and margin that matter to the business.

Mr Freedman makes some great points. Typically short and sweet is a more ideal approach. Sometimes timing and day of the week can have a dramatic effect as well. What are you typical CTA's and how clear is that action point? I might suggest Litmus if you are not already using it. We have found that handcoding responsive emails and running it through Litmus gives us a decent bump.

The most common mistakes:
- Too many links
- Too many items -- overall length is too long
Therefore:
- **Lack of focus **
In most cases there should be a single, clear call to action....but it can be included two or three times.
I've seen all too many newsletters that bury the call to action as the 18th of 24 links!
If there is great and useful content, it might be wiser to send shorter but more frequent newsletters. Some should have no specific product plugs...just great info. Counter-intuitive, I know!
If the audience is college students, you might want to consider embedding 60-seond videos videos.
I have quite a bit of experience in travel and education and would be happy to talk to you offline.

You are very correct! Thanks for the suggestion and I just added!

If I were to make a suggestion, you might mention what industry they are in. I know a lot of us SEO / Marketing people have industries that we are better in than others.

Is the on page optimization tool not working?
i received a grade f for one of my keywords/page. i corrected some of the points but when i tried to submit the form again, it doesn't check off those corrected items. is there something wrong with the tool right now? also, how does the tool work if i'm targeting 2 different keywords for one page? e.g. digital marketing philippines and digital marketing agency philippines I'm pretty sure one of the keywords will have problems with at least 3 critical and high importance on page factors (broad keyword usage in page title, exact keyword usage in page title, etc.) is there an effect if there's a critical factor left unchecked because using both keywords in the title might look redundant?

Using the On-Page optimization Report Card
I am curious if there is a way to get the on page optimization report card to not show a grade of "F" for a page that I'm not targeting a particular keyword for? For example my home page has a lot of grade "F's" for keywords that are targeted on different pages.

Question to SEOMOZ when will the On-Page Optimization tool be Updated
Hi, When will your On-page Optimization Tool be updated to reflect the Over Optimization Penalty which is coming. I would think that grading out at an 'A' will have adverse effects.

Help with duplicate title tags?
I was looking in Google webmaster tools and it says I have 95 duplicate title tags for my site Noah's Dad. When I look through the list it appears the pages with duplicate title tags are some of my category pages, archive pages, and some author pages... Not sure if you guys can use some of the tools to see what is actually showing up duplicate or not, and if you need more info just let me know. But I wanted to see if this is something I should be concerned with? Should WMT also say 0 in duplicate content? It seems like when I started my blog I was told no to be conceded with this sort of stuff in gwmt. Anyways...I just wanted to see what you guys think. (By the way, is there any way to tell what this duplicate content is having (or has had) on my SERP results? Thanks.

Seomoz Customer Service does anyone feel let down
I would like to know if anyone else feels let down by seomoz and their customer service. I will give you a couple of examples why i feel let down. I contacted customer services over an issue a couple of weeks a go and never got an answer from them, and the second issue is the private question that you can ask. I asked many days ago and it was an important question and it has still not been answered. I am just wondering what we are paying for by using this site and if other customers of this service feel let down like me.

Can anyone edit their comments?
I've been unable to edit my comments here for about a week 😕 Just me or is it like this for everyone? Tried FF 4, Chrome, IE 9, Safari and iPhone Safari. Just get the loading icon. If it's just me I'll submit a bug report.

Keywords in front of the title element and on page keyword optimization
After running one of my landing pages through the SEOmoz on-page keyword optimization tool, I see that my keywords are 13 characters from the front of the title. My page is already receiving an A letter grade. The 13 characters in front of my keyword phrase are not vital, but they related to the keyword phrase. Is it that important that I drop the related word, in order to get my keyword phrase to start at the front?
