How do I increase my client's Google Local listings?
-
Hi Guys,
I have a hypothetical question for you. Let's say I live in a town that has two pizza places and in the maps section of a Google SERP the other place outranks my client when I type in "Pizza Place Smalltown NY."
What would be a list of things that I could do to make "Pizza Place Smalltown, NY" rank better in that portion?
Thanks!

Hi Michael,
Definitely check out the link Jim Rudnick has shared to the Local Search Ranking Factors 2014 survey. As you'll see from that, local search rankings are made up of a tremendous number of factors, with some having more weight than others. So, first, you want to be sure your client has all of his ducks in a row with the basics. Then, you should analyze his competitor to see if you can spot any weaknesses.
We just published an interesting tutorial here on Moz for using our Check Listing tool for some cool competitive analysis. Check this out:
http://moz.com/help/guides/local/check-listing
The above how-to also gives some other research suggestions.
Essentially, what your client needs to do is:
-
Do all of the basics right
-
Make a superior effort in some areas, such as content development, review acquisition and, possibly, social engagement
-
Remember that rankings are not static. Over the past few years, it has been clear that one of the most important local search ranking factors relates to the physical location of a customer at the time he is making his search. You may hear this referred to as the customer/using being the 'centroid'. Particularly on mobile devices, where a customer is in town will influence whether your client or his competitor comes up first, based on the distance between the searcher and the business. It's really, really important educate all local business clients about this!
Hope this helps!

Optimize the Google+ page, ensure NAP (name, address, and phone#) consistency, build NAP listings (Check out Moz Local to cover the data aggregators and Whitespark for additional opportunities,) ensure you have listings at any local directories such as city specific, BBB, chamber of commerce, and work on building any industry specific pizza links to increase their organic rankings as well. Other items such as adding schema markup to the NAP on site might help.

Getting A Duplicate Listing Removed
I just found a duplicate listing for our business. It's under a different name and address but the phone number is the same. The duplicate listing needs to be deleted, BUT, here's the problem: no one verified the listing (it was our old firm). And now, to delete it, we have to verify it first, but we don't have access to the building to get the letter. Also, we can't ask the current tenants to give us the letter, because it's another law firm and they just aren't going to help us out. So, any ideas? Ruben

Does Bing Business Portal still not accept Canadian listings?
I've read a lot of blog posts from a few years ago that Bing Business portal(maps) doesn't accept Canadian Business listings. I figured by now they would be accepting listings however when I try and submit one you cannot pick Canada. It's defaulted to USA. Are they seriously still not accepting Canadian listings?

Local SEO: Google Places and Google+
Hello, I'm a little confused by Google+ for business. I set up a Google Places page in 2010 and recently changed my address to incorporate my suite number and to spell out "Street" instead of abbreviating. I'm planning on carefully changing all citations to match. Next I started a Google+ page for my business. But I couldn't fill out the address and ended up requesting a postcard for verification to continue. The postcard was sent to the right address but no suite number. I'll still get the postcard, but I can't finish my page yet. Also, I don't know if I have to re-verify my Places page with the slight changes. Am I on the right track?

Google Places Listing
Hi, I have the following issue. I'm doing marketing for a restaurant. There used to be 2 restaurants under the same owner, but they ended up splitting. Now these two locations are completely different owners. The issue is that the google places listing is currently pointing to the same website. How can I change the website address of this listing without having access to the email that was used to create it? Thanks

Local listing sites - are they better than directories and is there a list?
Do you guys know of any local listing sites that are better quality than general directories that still give you a link back. I know a lot of them for local citations, but I'm wondering if there is a list somewhere of ones that include a link. Thanks.
