Is it worth to get links from startup directorys?
-
Hi,
I have a startup that connects people with lawyers.
There are a lot of directories of startups. These are legitimate directories and not like the spammy directories.
Is it worth getting links from these types of directories?
Let me know.
-
There is one more and very important point here. Can almost anyone get a link here? if so, then I would say no.
-
In a word - definitely.
Certainly don't go crazy and focus all your efforts on building startup directory links as it's always best to have a varied and natural-looking link profile. I would say to just focus on the top directories such as CrunchBase which are highly authoritative as well as relevant. It's also particularly important for startups to be listed in these kinds of directories as it will give a certain level of credibility and perhaps even provide potential investors with key information that would otherwise not be on your main website.
Things to stay away from:
- paid directories
- any directories which are not "human-edited" ie, there is a no editorial control of which sites go into the directories
- general web directories except for the likes of dmoz.org
Additionally, it's relatively straightforward to get some results in terms of link building from PR coverage; startups can be particularly news-worthy, especially if the startup is disruptive.

Hi there
Of course! But do a bit of manual research. For instance, ask yourself...
-
Does this link help my website?
-
Is this link relevant to my website?
-
Would I trust this site (that's linking to me) if I landed on it?
-
Is the website or content in which I am being linked from topically relevant to my website?
-
If you check metrics - does anything about the metrics (domain authority, page authority,Majestic, SEMRush traffic/ranking data, etc) make me feel uneasy?
-
Are the links from directory templates? (example)
-
Inspect URLs with blatant spam words
-
Free
-
Porn
-
XXX
-
Submit
-
Directory
-
Paid
-
Links
-
URL
-
Sex
-
etc.
-
Check for multiple domains and URLs on the same IPs
-
This can usually show link farms or spam
As long as your bases are covered, there are no issues with be listed in directories that are relevant to your site. Here are some great resources for startup SEO:

Hope this all helps! Good luck!

Is It Possible to Be Punished By Google For Getting Too Many Links?
Hello, My team and I have been trying to get high-quality back-links by seeking other sites and blogs. We were ranking really well and then all of a sudden, our rankings dropped dramatically. We were only using backlinks and good ones at that, yet, our rankings have dropped. Is it possible for google to punish us for getting too many too fast? If not, what could be some of the other problems?

Manual Links Vs. Smart Links
Hey Everybody, Is there any downside to the smart link plugins that I see all over wordpress? Basically in short I enter a keyword and where I want that link to go (primarily internal) and set the parameters of repetition etc and it automatically adds the link to that. Now other than the obvious situation where it might put a link in an awkward place, is there anything wrong with this sort of software? Part of me things that this sort of software would not be liked by Google, and that it isn't really getting counted as a true link, but i wanted to see if there were other thoughts or experience with this.

What is a good ratio of total links to linking root domains?
Is 100 total links for every linking domain too high? I suppose I could also look at ratios of sites that are doing well in the rankings.

Which Links to Disavow!
We just took over SEO for a new client who is being penalized for a bad link profile. They've asked Google to reconsider multiple times, and Google still claims that the links are bad. Because of this, and because I don't have direct access (logins, etc.) to what the former SEO did, I am considering using the disavow links tool. The most obvious links to disavow are a group of almost 1000 links that come from the same forum. However, when viewing the links on this forum they actually seem natural. People are reviewing the product (ipod cases), both negatively and positively. While this could have been an SEO tactic for link building, I don't want to disavow these links if they're not the problem, even though this domain is the source of almost all the low-quality links. Another site that has more than 200 links is Askives. Do any of you have experience with links from Askives, or removing these links? Thanks again!

Get Lots of links quickly?
Hey everyone, I have some questions about links. First off, I only do things that are very white hat, so I don't want to do any sort of spammy or paid links. I have been doing SEO for a year and a half and have been researching and following SEOmoz for that amount of time as well. I still am having a hard time getting links. I have a low budget and am not sure what to do. I have two pro webinars in mind as some background for my questions. First of all, the webinar Rand did on link building during the summer was great and really motivated me - http://www.seomoz.org/webinars/future-of-link-building. I realized that there were things we could do to get links, but that they would just take time. Secondly, in Dr.Pete's recent webinar on the future of SEO, (http://www.seomoz.org/webinars/future-proofing-your-seo-2012-edition) he threw out a number like 10 as far as referring to how many links someone could get per day. Maybe I misunderstood but this seems crazy to me. I've tried the tactic of emailing for links, no dice (they were personalized emails and done properly). I am now planning on moving towards producing great content to draw in links, but the kind that would work would take a lot more time and money than what I am allotted. I feel a little overwhelmed and concerned. I would appreciate any insights. Thanks! Holly

Getting Many Links from Tumbler Question?
If I have 10 links coming from 10 Tumbler blogs.. Do they count as 10 linking domains or 1 linking domain coming from tumbler.com? Does the authority of links coming from tumbler decrease the more I get links from tumbler blogs? Thanks
