Optimizing dog walking site for search phrase "dog walkers nyc"
-
Background: We have a dog walking company that serves NYC. According to our AdWords campaign, most leads come from the search phrase: "dog walkers nyc."
Question: If the goal is to get as much organic traffic as possible for the search phrase "dog walkers nyc," should we just optimize our http://barkbud.com/ domain for the search phrase "dog walkers nyc," OR should we also have a page like http://barkbud.com/dog-walkers-nyc/ optimized for the same phrase?
Thanks!

Personally I wouldn't optimize both pages for a single keyword. As Matt says, that is a good way to look spammy. That being said, you probably want to build out your site with other options for potential clients since a single page targeting dog walkers in NYC will not do much to help your overall traffic. It will work well as a lead-generation page, however, so as I said earlier, you probably want to work on converting those folks who come to your website rather than focusing on generating enormous amounts of traffic.
Also, to underline Matt's point, don't use exact match keyword targeting since that will look unnatural. I would personally look for relevant keywords that people are searching for - a great method for this can be found in this article:
Use this method to develop pages that follow user intent when they are looking for dog walking services and generate some pages with respect to those questions. You will improve your website's UX and increase your overall conversion potential.
Best of luck moving forward!

Thanks Matt!

It's extremely unlikely that you'd rank two pages for one term, so I personally wouldn't recommend optimizing two pages for the same keyword. I also suggest you be very careful about optimizing for an exact match keyword like that, as it could make your copy sound stilted and unnatural ("We're the best dog walkers NYC around!"). If it's very clear that your service is dog walking and that your located in NYC—perhaps use schema markup to establish the location, and make sure to have a presence on the relevant directories—I'd think you'd be fine.
Plus, since BarkBud only offers dog walking, and only in NYC, a page like barkbud.com/dog-walkers-nyc/ is redundant at best, and spammy at worst.

Thanks for the response Rob! We are only selling one service, dog walking. I don't see this changing for some time. Also, we are only serving NYC. Given this, do you think we should optimize barkbud.com AND barkbud.com/dog-walkers-nyc/ for the search phrase "dog walkers nyc?"

Hi,
For maximizing your traffic, there are a couple of questions you need to ask before optimizing your domain/page for your chosen keyword(s):
- Do you offer additional services?
If you are simply walking dogs, then optimizing your website for these specific search terms is in your best interest. If you are trying to develop new services, or provide information/additional value to potential clients, you may have to use a different tactic.
If you are only providing the single service, you can optimize your home page for the keywords and be done with it. If you are trying to provide additional services/information, it is best if you create multiple pages with each page targeting specific keywords.
- Is organic traffic really your biggest seller?
Organic traffic (presumably new sessions) is a way to go, although it may not provide you with the greatest value when compared to direct traffic. I would suggest setting up goals and conversions for each of your keywords in GA and determining which traffic source provides you with the highest conversion rates. Determine whether repeat visitors or new visitors are the ones generating leads.
You may discover that you are focused on the wrong kind of traffic for your services. If you are set on gathering organic traffic, however, you should definitely have a separate optimized page in your sales funnel for relevant keywords.
- Are you over-stuffing your keywords?
Remember not to keyword stuff your website or provide unnatural links for your profile. This will have an adverse effect on your ranking potential. Perhaps try generating multiple pages which cover topics relevant to your keywords. For example, instead of just targeting "dog walkers nyc", try branching out to "benefits of dog walkers" or "4 things to ask a dog walker" - create a blog that answers questions you expect your customers to have, and create value for them that way.
This way, you are not depending on the quantity of traffic, but on the quality of your lead generation process. You may not need more traffic, you may merely need to optimize your conversion process.
Hope this adds some helpful insight.
Let me know if you have further questions,
Rob

HomePage Stopped Ranking For Brand on Aged Site
I've got an odd issue (that I've never encountered in 27 years in SEO). Our home page stopped ranking for our brand "BlowFish SEO" and is no place to be seen when searching our brand. I do get the knowledge panel on the right-hand side of the page. and our about page now comes up number #1. Technically the on-page SEO is correct This page has ranked for many years for our Brand. If I search blowfish SEO west palm beach I get the home page and all the nice site links. And other various variations of branded search. Our company has lots of mentions across the web and branded backlinks. No manual penalty has been placed on us. Im starting to think some type of negative SEO attack but I can't find it. I do know someone is using my name and brand along with many other companies in cloaked doorway redirected pages to gain SEO leads.. Yeah I know I've complained about it to Google they do nothing about it.. Other things I've checked: No one else seems to be using my brand Home page canonical tag points to itself Title tag contains brand name at the front (rest of site it's at the end) No manual penalty XML sitemap contains home page (and accurate for other pages) To make this even more confusing, if you search the brand name the physical location appears on the right rail with an accurate URL. Ive added an image of the search result when I search BlowFish SEO Please note the top result is PPC the about page is 1st organc Any other ideas that I may be missing? BT8F1fD.png

Discourage search engines from indexing this site AFTER a site launch
Hi, I have unticked "Discourage search engines from indexing this site" a few months before the initial release of my website. I don't want to be found by search engines until the official release (still a few months left). Do you think that ticking this box again will harm the website's long-term ranking or have any repercussion on the website? Do you have any additional advice to avoid being temporarily ranked until the official release which won't harm the website in SERPs? Thanks for your answers.

Weird: Local Landing Page Not Showing In "City + Brand" Search Query
Hi Mozzers, I've noticed something strange that I can't quite wrap my head around. I'm hoping it's an easy fix and I'm just overlooking something. Backstory: I'm managing all things digital for a local flooring retailer that has 6 showrooms in the region. I've done basic local SEO - local landing pages with proper markup, GMB set up and verification, Moz Local scores are in the 80% range for each location and improving steadily, etc. However, one of my locations is way behind all of the others in both organic searches and the map. Recently, I did a search for "city + brand" for this particular location in an incognito window and the page came up on the 4th page. When I perform the same search for any of the other locations, the respective landing page come up 1st or 2nd along with the homepage. I even searched using the title tag as well as a few more specific searches and still nothing on the first page. This is weird, right? Has anyone experienced this before? Search Console came back perfect, so no penalties and it's definitely being indexed. For reference, the page I am referring to is http://www.nextdayfloors.net/locations/columbia/ and the location query I am using is "Columbia, MD" Any help is much appreciated! Thanks! Tim

Will NAP Schema Impact non local searches
Hi, Just got a business address and a toll free number for my website. I have read that adding the NAP details schema to the site gives that additional weight of trust to Google and also helps local search. Now my website is NOT local. However, if I add my LA address details on my website using the Local Business schema.org, it might give Google the impression that I am based out of CA. Fair enough, but my question is, will it impact negatively for SERPs from other states. For example I might want to rank for KW "Autism Alternative Treatment". Obviously now that I have added my NAP, if someone keys in Autism Alternative Treatment LA or Autism Alternative Treatment CA, google should give my site preference. But if someone searched Autism Alternative Treatment Arizona, will google exclude/downgrade me (even though there may not be a local site for Arizona) from the search results under the pretext that I am not Arizona based? Your suggestion would be very helpful.

2 Relevant local websites but closing one and redirecting it to an older site
We have 2 websites, 1 domain is about 10 years old and another is about 4 years old, the 4 yr old domain we are thinking of shutting down since its the same type of service we run but it was a 'keyword domain' that used to rank on 1st page but now its 4th page back. If we put the blog posts and other content + setup re-directs from the 4yr old domain to the 10 yr old domain, would this help the 10 yr old domain with more link juice that it might need for the extra boost? There isnt really any point having both websites up since both are about the same content and targeting the same local market.
