How to perform keyword research for Innovative products?
-
Hi Mozzers,
I am doing an SEO audit for a new client that has an innovative product in the shoe industry. The terms he uses to qualify his shoes don't get searched that much. Digging in into his google analytics I found some potential kws that has a small amount of traffic that he is already ranking for. So my question is how should I conduct my kw research for an innovative product that is new to the market and no competitors to analyze from?
Thanks for providing any tips and/or suggestions!

Hello Taysir,
I don't like the suggestion of trying to rank for similar searches. That smells like "bait and switch", and would probably lead to poor user-engagement metrics, which would eventually harm your rankings across the board.
Creating demand for new products and services is always a challenge. You have to get out of the pattern of thinking about keywords and start thinking about personas and topics instead. You'll be writing very early buying-stage content for each persona. This is content designed to drive traffic from people who might be interested in what you have to offer, but don't know about it yet. Here are some examples without me really knowing enough about the product to give "real" suggestions:
Persona: Style Focused Samuel
Interests: Fashion, style, celebrity culture, music
Topic Idea: The Footwear Style Guide for 20016
Details: Contact publicists and send free samples to celebrities and athletes. Show pictures of celebrities, fashionistas and others pushing the trends of footwear. One of the several different "trends" to look out for will be your clients' innovative shoe product. Publish this on a shoe/footwear or fashion blog if you can.Persona: Price Conscious Carroll
Interests: Family, budgeting, jogging
Topic Idea: Saving Money on Kids' Shoes
Details: Kids wear out and grow out of shoes constantly. Here are a few ideas to keep kiddie footwear expenses from breaking your bank. 1. Once-Upon-a-Child... similar stores. 2. This "innovative" shoe product that will lasts for years, guaranteed (again, I know nothing about the product so...).The idea is to introduce them to the product and brand by means of addressing their interests and concerns. If you get them to your site, offer a freebie, discount, premium gated content, or something else worth providing their email address for.
Step 1 - Identify the audience segments most likely to be interested in this new, innovative product.Step 2 - Create an audience persona for each of your major segments (2-3 typically). Include things like what they are interested in; where they currently go online to read, watch, socialize and shop; who influences them online; etc...
Step 3 - Write content that both addresses their needs/interests while at the same time featuring this brand and their new footwear product. Preferably, publish the content on a site you have identified as a place where this segment hangs out online (e.g. Jogging forums, fashion blogs...) to reach an audience much bigger than you would by publishing it on your site. The content should try to get them to the site though - usually by peaking their interests for more information, or offering them something of value.
Step 4 - Collect their email address when they come to the site.
Step 5 - Nurture them to a purchase over time through email offers (premium content, discounts, freebies...)If you need to create demand for a new keyword search, just use it in the content, press releases, etc... and over time some search volume should start to creep up. In the meantime, don't let that keep you from driving qualified traffic to the site with persona-based topic research.
Good luck!

If there are relevant products available in the market or people are searching for keywords that are somehow relevant to your product. My idea is to include them in the bucket see what possibly will convert, shorten your list and try to run the PPC test to see which one of them are actually going to convert and work on it accordingly.
If it’s a really new product and you see that there is no related keywords that actually allow people to come to the page and convert in that case (IMHO) you should try awareness campaign. This might be a little lengthy process but if your product hit off you will be able to sale your product on awareness campaign and if people really like your product the organic ripple effect can take you to the next level.
Hope this helps!

If concepts are too similar when grouping keywords what do I do ?
I will summarise and then ty to explain : When I group keyword with the keyword explorer if concepts (grouping keywords) that I find are too similar to each other how do I go about it... Ldg me know explain. When google doesn't have enough data to rank a website with content does it only use links ? Let me give you an example. If I take "title tag" as a keyword people have a lots of questions that can be answered which will create numerous concepts. However, let's take "hiking tours Italy" for example. If I go through the keyword explorer or all the other tools existing out there people don't have questions. All I find are variations or synonyms of my keyword and I group by low lexical similarity all the words are going to be very similar. I know that each variation can be grouped and considered a different concepts but writing about various concepts that mean exactly the same thing because of lack of data not very smart and useful... So in that case what does google do, does it rank a website only based on links or schema ? see that it has no way to rank it based on good quality content because of a lack of data (questions that could be answers that would lead to concepts). Thank you,

Are keywords in the title tag becoming redundant?
I've noticed that lot's of the world's leading digital agencies are not using keywords in their titles. Eg AKQA, DigitasLBi, POKE, SYZYGY etc. Why is that? Are keywords no longer that important? This can't be accidental seeing as it's the case for so many leading agencies.

Handling of product variations and colours in ecommerce
Hi, our site prams.net has 72.000 crawled and only 2500 indexed urls according to deep crawl mainly due to colour variations (each colour has its own urls now). We now created 1 page per product, eg http://www.prams.net/easywalker-mini and noindexed all the other ones, which had a positive effect on our seo. http://www.prams.net/catalogsearch/result/?q=002.030.059.0 I might still hurt our crawl budget a lot that we have so many noindexed pages. The idea is now to redirect 301 all the colour pages to this main page and make them invisible. So google do not have to crawl them anymore, we included the variations in the product pages, so they should still be searchable for google and the user. Does this make sense or is there a better solution out there? Does anyone have an idea if this will likely have a big or a small impact? Thanks in advance. Dieter

Why Is Google Indexing These Product Pages On Shopify?
How can we communicate to Google the exact product pages we'd like indexed on our site? We're an apparel company that uses Shopify as our ecommerce platform. Website is sportiqe.com. Currently, Google is indexing all types of different pages on our site. **Example of a product page we want indexed: ** Product Page: sportiqe.com/products/PRODUCT-TITLE (Like This) **Examples of product pages being indexed: ** sportiqe.myshopify.com/products/PRODUCT-TITLE sportiqe.com/collections/COLLECTION-NAME/products/PRODUCT-TITLE See attached for an example of how two different "Boston Celtics Grateful Dead" shirts are being indexed. Any suggestions? We've used both Shopify and Google Webmaster tools to set our preferred domain (sportiqe.com). We've also added this snippet of code to our site three months ago thinking that would do the trick... {% if template == 'product' %}{% if collection %} {% endif %}{% endif %} sKwNZOl

What keywords should my main page contain ?
Hello. I have a domain with scripts and components for websites, each product page is somehow different and contains different phrases and keywords, for example: a) Flash Photo Gallery
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | adrianTNT
b) JavaScript Menu
c) Flash Menu
d) PHP Rating Script
e) PHP Poll script It's kind of clear for me how to optimize keywords on these pages individually, but what would be best content / terms / keywords to use on my main page and main page title and anchor text to my root domain? Should it be a mix of all these keywords mentioned above ? Or is it better to be a general term like "website scripts" ?0 -
Unsure where Google has sourced this inaccurate Product Data
Hi, This is a slightly odd one I was hoping someone could shed some light on. One of our staff just did a Google search and located these listings on Google UK Product Search: http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=ink+cartridges&hl=en&sa=X&biw=1074&bih=499&tbm=shop&prmd=imvns#q=ink+cartridges&hl=en&sa=X&tbs=store:3287803270081455254&tbm=shop&prmd=imvns&ei=xp5pUP6uN8i_0QXUuoHADQ&ved=0CI0BEMcMMAE&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&fp=333b49ec245f6031&biw=1074&bih=499 Do you happen to have any idea where Google is getting this regionalised data from and in particular the pricing which is incorrect? We have a Google (UK) Product Feed however the prices given are different than those being displayed in this localised search. Additionally the product feed that we supply relates to our main website and not a specific store. If you click through to compare prices from multiple merchants you'll see our prices being listed correctly under our company name and website rather than the incorrect pricing attributed to a specific store. I have checked our Google Places Account and our Google Product Feed Account but I just can't figure out where this data and incorrect pricing is coming from and indeed why it only affects our physical stores and not the more generalised website pricing. If someone could point me in the right direction so I can get this corrected I’d appreciate it! Many thanks Chris
