Community Discussion - Are data AND storytelling the missing ingredients for successful content marketing efforts?
-
Data is an important element of content marketing. Storytelling, too, gets readers' attention and has been shown to be instrumental in prospects and customers forming strong connections to brands. But using data and storytelling helps produce some of the strongest content there is to be shared, says Nichole Elizabeth DeMeré in her latest YouMoz article, Here’s How to Combine Storytelling and Data to Produce Persuasive Content.
What are your thoughts? Think data and storytelling work best separately? Read the post are share your thoughts below.

Data is the cinnamon of content marketing. It enhances your dish with a nice cinnamon flavor, but you probably don't want a big heaping spoonful of uncut cinnamon or the next thing you know you've launched a viral video meme. Or something like that.
A story without data maybe is a nice story, but it's also toothless. The internet is littered with baseless opinions and we don't really need more of that. You can make an opinion insightful, however, when you back it up with facts, sources, numbers. Prove a product works laying out a success by the numbers. I want to see stories that know when to lean into the data, the kind of story that chews your face off and then drops the mic.
Make an assertion, express an opinion, back it up with facts, but never forget that the numbers are there to support the story, and not the other way around.
Cinnamon... face chewing... it must getting close to lunch time.

I am one of those who believe Data and Storytelling both have their own powers and if you are using both you should know how much will be too much for the audience.
I mean (let’s take the EGOL’s example here) if you are addressing to the donors obviously good storytelling will rock but data carefully included with storytelling will only help. Similarly, if you are talking to accountants the numbers and data will work more but if carefully crafted storytelling will attach to it, it will only offer benefits.
And obviously promotion. Without it you will be a loose no matter how great your story is or how good your numbers and data are.
Just a thought!

I think that the potential audience is also a factor.
If you are appealing to potential donors or advocates, then a story will be powerful call to action. On the other hand, if you are appealing to accountants or engineers, they will need data before taking action.

Excellent point, Donna. I do think data and storytelling form a formidable team, but their impact is certainly limited without the benefit of promotion.

The missing ingredient is promotion.

Any recommendations on a Content Marketing Firm?
I have used several and had some good results. Am wondering if I can find one that is more cost effective than who I am using now, as they just doubled their prices.

Is there a way to automate finding low quality content on your site?
Hi all, I have a site that was once #1 for many keywords. Fast forward a number of years and I am sinking lower and lower and it really started to sink low from September 2012 and appears to be due to an algo update. How should I go about finding my low quality pages? I am told that I might have pages bringing my entire site down. I deleted heaps of low quality pages but not seeing any improvements (might be a little impatient). Any tips for finding bad content?

Duplicate content penalty
Hi there, I'd like to ensure I avoid a duplicate content penalty and could do with some advice. There is a popular blogger in my industry. I have agreed to add his blog to my website. He currently posts his blog on one of the popular free blogger platforms, and will continue to do this. The issue is that I will be posting duplicate content onto my site and I want to ensure that I do not trigger a google penalty. Is there a simple way form me to inform Google of the original source of the content. My intitial thoughts are: 1. Add a noindex to the Robots.txt file 2. Add a link at the beginning of the article pointing to the original source 3. Adding a rel=canonical tag in the header of each blog entry pointing to the original blog post which resides on a completely different domain. Thanks DBC

Possible to recover from Thin/Duplicate content penalties?
Hi all, first post here so sorry if in wrong section. After a little advice, if I may, from more experienced SEOers than myself with regards to writing off domains or keeping them. To cut a long story short I do a lot of affiliate marketing, back in the day (until the past 6 months or so) you could just take a merchant's datafeed and with some SEO outrank them for individual products. However, since the Google Panda update this hasn't worked as well and now it's much hard to do - which is better for the end user. The issue I have is that I got lazy and tried to see if I could still get some datafeeds to rank with only duplicate content. The sites ranked very well at first but after a couple of weeks died massively. They went from 0 to 300 hits a day in a matter of 24 hours and back to 2 hits a day. The sites now not rank for anything which is obviously because they are duplicate content. The question I have is are these domains dead, can they be saved? Not talking about duplicate content but as a domain itself. I used about 10 domains to test things, they ranged from DA 35 to DA 45 - one of the tests being can a domain with reasonable DA rank for duplicate content. Seeing as the test didn't work I want to use the domains for proper sites with proper unique content, however so far although the new unique content is getting indexed it is suffering from the same ranking penalties the duplicate (and now deleted content) pages had. Is it worth trying to use these domains, will Google finally remove the penalty when they notice that the bad content is no longer on the site or are the domains very much dead? Many thanks

Someone wants to syndicate my content but I'm afraid
I GOT THE FOLLOWING EMAIL: Hi, I visited your site and would like to connect regarding nSphere syndicating your content into our search platform. We are interested in syndicating your content into our network. There’s no cost for this, we ask you to place a module on your site that reads your content and syndicates it into our network of millions of users. You only need to place a simple JavaScript code on your site. I have the code, but I would like to speak or email with you first. This module acts as search tool for your users as well. Can you email me or send me your number and a good day/time to connect? Thank you in advance.
