Does getting a placement in a high DA site matter if PA remains low?
-
I run a very small business in Australia, and was thrilled to create content which got picked up by a DA92 site in my industry. PA is at 1 as it's only been live for 2 weeks now, and I have a couple of questions that I couldn't find online:
-
If a huge site like the Wall Street Journal adds content all the time, the page gets buried in their history. Would the PA improve over time, or should I just expect it to remain at 1 or 1-10?
-
Is the boost to my SERP's negligable, is there a period where I need to wait to see the effect, or is there any effect whatsoever if the PA remains low?
Thanks so much in advance, I really appreciate any input.
Cheers,
Marcus -

thanks so much for your reply Brian that makes a lot of sense.
I'm now just waiting for another couple of links to get indexed, then hopefully I'll see some rewards for the work done!
Cheers,
Marcus

If that link comes from a Wall St. Journal Property that doesn't allow just anyone to create pages with followed links (i.e. blogspot), I would anticipate that link yielding terrific long term results for your site's page and domain authority. Most small businesses have a very hard time getting those types of links so you should be very proud.
At the same time though, when it comes to linkbuilding always remember to play the long game. Every once in awhile that unicorn link that makes an instant impact comes along but generally speaking that's a result of click through traffic as a result of people clicking on that link when the page goes live ... it sounds like that's NOT the case here if I understand your post correctly so I would just keep doing what you're doing that got you that link in the first place
Also, I'm sure you've already done this but it's always a good idea to share links about your business from other sites on your social media for the bragging rights and of course, it won't hurt the value of that link to have good social signals going to it.

Thanks for the reply Matt, that makes a lot of sense.
As a follow-up query, if it's picked up on a large site that generates daily content, should the PA not improve by much, will the link even matter? The content was to a Wall St Journal property, and as a result I doubt people will read it now that it's a couple of weeks old and newer content has gone up on their site. Originally I was thrilled, but I'm starting to doubt whether it will matter that much to my rankings, as it will continue to go deeper and deeper in to their history.
Cheers,
Marcus -
Sure! It's almost like it's my job. In general, your timeline is accurate. Campaigns—including crawl report, keyword rankings, etc.—update weekly.
-
I'm still learning about refresh rates & the inner workings of Moz - today I learned a bit more, thanks Matt.
-
Oh, and just to say: Congrats on your content getting picked up. That's pretty rad.

Hi Marcus!
What I'm getting from your question in that a high-authority site has a roughly two-week-old page featuring a piece of content of yours. Is that correct?
Generally, a PA or DA of 1 simply means that we don't yet have information on that URL. As I explained in my response to John, we gather that information through our crawl of the web as documented in our Mozscape index. That crawl takes ~1 month.
PA and DA are based on pretty much the same factors, and those factors are almost entirely based on the strength of the backlink profile. According to the Open Site Explorer home page, the last index was released March 2, and the next index is expected to be released March 30. That makes March 30 the earliest you can expect to see information about that page. It's quite possible that you still won't see it until the following update.
PA and DA are both based on pretty much the same factors, and those factors are based almost entirely on the strength of the backlink profile. The difference is that DA is based on the backlink profile for the entire domain, while PA is based on the backlink profile for just that page. PA can be raised by building links to the page. If it doesn't gain links, PA won't improve (though I'd expect it to me higher than 1 once it's been crawled and indexed).
Now, lastly, you ask about your boost in the SERPs. I assume you mean you're expecting a bump for your site, since the high-authority site links to you through the content it's picked up, yes? In that case, you may see some benefit on the SERPs well before the change is reflected in PA (Google crawls a lot faster than we do). The amount of a boost you get will depend on a lot, including your competitors' link profiles and whether the content that got picked up also appears on your site (if it does, I hope the high-authority site is pointing to the original content on your site with rel=canonical, or you could find yourself competing with them).
I really hope that makes sense. Let me know if you need more clarification, or if I'm just totally misunderstanding your question!

I just want to add a point of clarification to #1 there:
It could actually be several months before PA and DA update to reflect changes. This is because PA and DA are link metrics based on our Mozscape index (the index that also powers Open Site Explorer). Index update times vary, but it's fair to say they take an average of 4 weeks or so to compile. So, link metrics update approximately once per month.
But!
Say your site acquires a new backlink, which may have an affect on its authority metrics. If Mozscape is still in the process of crawling and indexing the web and hasn't yet crawled your site, then provided your site gets does get crawled you'll see the changes in the next index release.
If, however, Mozscape is still in the process of crawling and indexing the web and has already crawled your site, you won't see any update for 2 or more index cycles. This is because your site has already been crawled in that cycle and won't be recrawled until the index is released and we start on a new one.
You can see the date of the last release and the expected date of the next on the Open Site Explorer homepage, or here.
Does that make sense?

I'm fairly new, so take this with a grain of salt but:
-
I expect the PA might improve over time, although I can't be sure. Also remember that Moz doesn't update in realtime, so even if Google figures out what's going on and gives you credit, it might take a week or two to show up in Moz.
-
(I'm more confident on this answer) It'll take time. Nothing in SEO is instant, in my experience. Also, if the huge publication picked it up & linked to you, you'll probably get a bunch of other copy-cat links.

What's the best way of crawling my entire site to get a list of NoFollow links?
Hi all, hope somebody can help. I want to crawl my site to export an audit showing: All nofollow links (what links, from which pages) All external links broken down by follow/nofollow. I had thought Moz would do it, but that's not in Crawl info. So I thought Screaming Frog would do it, but unless I'm not looking in the right place, that only seems to provide this information if you manually click down each link and view "Inlinks" details. Surely this must be easy?! Hope someone can nudge me in the right direction... Thanks....

Is there an issue with my site?
Been mostly hanging around top of page two for the last couple of years for “Liverpool Wedding photographer” although got myself on page 1 for “Liverpool photographer” I have split the title of the page to target these two keywords. I took the Liverpool photographer off the title to see if it was being detrimental to the “Liverpool wedding photographer” I didn’t see no increase in ranking so put it back as I get a bit of commercial work from it. Since last year I have got onto page 1 at least three times around position 5-6. Within a week or two I start sliding down again and end up back at top of page two. I could understand this slow push out if my competitors were busy SEO wise but from what I have seen they are not. There is a guy using the keywords in URL and calls himself “Liverpool wedding photographer” last time I checked he literally had no links but is in the first 5 positions. I have I think a better link profile than every one else. Although I am on and off with Facebook and Instagram, (more off) so that probably isn’t helping. Although I have a colleague in the video side of things and he doesn’t use social media at all and it hasn’t harmed him. A few years ago I was burned quite badly by a total charlatan. He sunk my home page to page 4. He talked the talk about creating landing pages but his methods were shoddy to say the least. I can’t believe I was taken in by him, although I was only with him for 2 months. He was still using spammy link techniques to generate lots of toxic links for me! I disavowed all of his links and put the keywords back on the home page and was back to my usual top of page 2 position within a week. Since then I have disavowed all directory links and anything not wedding related. I have an article which ranks 1st or second for “Nikon CLS”. I have also another article of 2000 words or so on another reasonable placed photography website. A few links from other vendors or people I have taken photographs for. I have about 10 featured weddings with a link on 4 good weddings blogs. I don’t think a massive amount of blog comments although I have stopped doing this. If I look at most of the competitors these are their main links, with directories as well! Last winter I put a quite substantial article about documentary wedding photography on my home page. I flew to number 2, although I photographed The World Transformed (the alternative labour conference in Liverpool). I got a lot of clicks to a gallery page (few thousand off social media} so I don’t know if that coincided with it. Same thing – watching the website go down a few positions every day until within just over a week or two I was about 4th on page 2! Its like my website is on a spring which can push into page 1 but rebounds back to top of page 2. I am staring to worry that my site has been marked as a bad character in some way because I get what seems to be rough treatment from google compared to my peers. I have written I think 4 or 5 (1500 word) articles the last couple of months talking about lenses and wedding photography related topics and Google pushed me back to page 1, peaking At position 5. I was there for a few weeks and then the slide happened again. Bit demoralised at the moment, what to do? Any help or pointers would be most appreciated. Best wishes. David.

Why does some sites rank with no seo
Why is it that some site rank with zero efforts? I have been working on some seo for a while on my main site and i have been getting more info competition analysis with sem and moz. Looking at the states from this website which tends to popup often in the searches on page 1-2 before my site. This site is not keyword optimized, meaning they arent even trying to rank.

There is no content, articles etc.,
6 backlinks (nothing powerful just 2 directory links and 2 from developer)
Site really isnt even designed to get traffic as its a trade only ecommerce website
I doubt they are hiding anything as far as backlinks etc. as it will get them too many visitors they dont want
The city i am searching isnt even on the page (it is a city within a city so maybe google still relates it)
PA 24 DA 15 Now my site:
Optimized reasearched keywords
175 backlinks
All my main pages have content with images, alt tags, internal linking
full of content, blogs, videos, products (probably 4000, could a site being too big be an issue?)
Site gets regular updates
I probably have 200 citations
All the social media which gets done often
PA 32 DA 20 They do get a good bit of traffic but that is probably the only thing i would see but it would be direct traffic mostly i believe as it would be people going to order regularly since it is a print reseller. They may have some age on me 15 vs 8 years. Could it be some kind of penalty i am not sure about lingering? According to what i know to check everyything looks ok, no shady links accoding to sem. I am working more and more on all the pages but this competittion site really doesnt have crap going on probably 8 pages and 1 page does all the ordering. What the hell does google want from me exactly!0 -
How do I get more video reviews on a new site?
Hi, I'm working on a site that has video reviews of various places. It's general information/experience that most people possess and production-wise they are selfies. These videos are then transcribed and, voila... searchable content. My problem is this... how do I get large numbers of people to go to the trouble to make a 2 minute selfie? I thought about HARO, since one could work in a plug for something, but they have a site traffic threshold that this new site isn't at. Any and all ideas on how to efficiently generate this content for a new site with very little traffic would be appreciated. Thanks!

Understanding the levels in my site
How can I figure out which pages are on the same level on my site ? I created an automatic sitemap with a software online but it doesn't tell me abc page is on the 1 st level, xyz page is on the second level etc... and I have a hard time figuring out if my main menu is on the same level as my drop down menu as it is visible on the same page. Is there anyway to figure what which pages are on the same level ?

URL Structure for Directory Site
We have a directory that we're building and we're not sure if we should try to make each page an extension of the root domain or utilize sub-directories as users narrow down their selection. What is the best practice here for maximizing your SERP authority? Choice #1 - Hyphenated Architecture (no sub-folders): State Page /state/ City Page /city-state/ Business Page /business-city-state/
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | knowyourbank
4) Location Page /locationname-city-state/ or.... Choice #2 - Using sub-folders on drill down: State Page /state/ City Page /state/city Business Page /state/city/business/
4) Location Page /locationname-city-state/ Again, just to clarify, I need help in determining what the best methodology is for achieving the greatest SEO benefits. Just by looking it would seem that choice #1 would work better because the URL's are very clear and SEF. But, at the same time it may be less intuitive for search. I'm not sure. What do you think?0 -
Do outbound links matter?
The value of inbound links is clear but do the number of outbound links matter when it comes to SEO and search engine rankings?
