Will Google Places put ranking weight on google reviews instead of 3rd party now?
-
WIth the visual update to Google Places over the past 2 days do you think that Google reviews will become a higher ranking factor as compared to 3rd party reviews. The research I have done shows that 3rd party reviews seem to correlate better with higher rankings..Any thoughts on what might be coming down the road?
-
Seems to me like the third party reviews are still making an impact on the rankings, it is just that google is no longer displaying them due to legal reasons.
-
I have to agree with you. We generally try to push customers to about 4 review sites Google Yelp City search And a specific vertical review site. I do think that eventually more weight will be given to google reviews simply to push business to use their service but I. Think a company would be foolish to put all eggs in the places review basket when they have such a problem with losing reviews and support.
-
I can't imagine Google would diminish the importance of third party reviews, which is one of the most meaningful signals of a business' local authority. Google reviews seem more susceptible to spam and bugs than many high quality review sites like Yelp.
Just because Google is no longer displaying certain items on Place pages, doesn't necessarily mean Google is changing the way those items are considered as as ranking factors.

Completely agree on the Citation point. They dont provide solid info on the places page so it makes sense that they have been pulled like mymaps were. I am just wondering about thoughts on reviews from 3rd party sites vs. reviews on Google. The approach has been to diversify your reviews to mutlple sites for rankings and also for "keeping eggs out of one basket". Wondering if many are going to switch strategy based on latest info.

"My personal opinion is that citations will not diminish, at least in the short term, in importance for Google’s algorithm. Particularly here in Brazil it’s amazing how reliant they are on sources beyond claimed Places. They’ve just gone 100% of the way to obfuscating what those sources are." - David Mihm
Personally, i have seen that citations are still quite powerful, especially if you can get quality citations from authority sites, not just all those fluff directories, those are just useless filler.

Does duplicate content damage ranking in YouTube the same way it does on websites?
I'm asking this question due to the following scenario: When we have videos produced by Third Party video companies they upload the video to their YouTube account before us (the customer), has chance to upload it to ours. If this was an article that was uploaded to the web then the website uploading it first would be classed as the original piece and all other website uploading the article would be considered duplicates and not rank (As I believe). Hence my question, does YouTube work in the same way and hence our videos when searched in YouTube be secondary to our Third Party video companies as they are posting them first? Regards, Tom

Help - Google places,a service my competitor has used...
I was just doing a bit of detective work on a competitors website and noticed they had employed the services of an SEO company. Anyway, i went on this SEO companies website and discovered they offer a service called "Google places". Now I have an idea what google places is (my company is registered with it) but how are SEOs using Google places as a method for SEO? And how can I copy this service to do this for my own website?

Schema or Google Video Sitemap
Hey. I have a few hundred pages with videos on them. I want to have rich snippets with the thumbnail and such in the search results. Should I focus my time on Schema or building out a solid sitemap? Your feedback is appreciated! Tommy Swanson

Google Places: "this place is permanently closed" what next?
All, I'm working on a duplicate Google places listing issue. One of the listings is accurate, verified and has been reviewed by quite a few customers. However, we have a problem with an old address that still shows up in Google maps and seems to be the cause of poor performance for the accurate listing. The old address listing was deleted but may not have been removed using best practices based on what I've been able to read here at SEO Moz. The old address listing has been flagged by Google with a notation: “this place is permanently closed.” My question is what happens next? Do listings that have been flagged as permanently closed eventually drop out of the search results Or do I need to take additional action? It appears that once a listing has been flagged as permanently close you can no longer report a problem so that route seems to be unavailable.

Google Places 3rd Party Reviews...
I have a client in the wedding industry who has quite a few awesome reviews on WeddingWire and a few other wedding resources. I've looked at the competition on Google Places, and Google counts their WeddingWire reviews. However, Google is not showing or counting my client's WeddingWire reviews, when in fact my client has better ratings and more reviews. Any ideas on why this might be or how I can get Google to include these reviews for my client? Thanks so much!!

Google Places - Different NAP on various directories...
My client's veterinary clinic uses a service called Localvets.com which is a division of Yext.com. This service updates listings and sponsors them across various directories. Since this is a referral service (they get paid for new clients) they use a custom phone number and custom website address for these listings. Question: Is this hurting the SEO potential of the Google Places listing since the N.A.P. are not the same? Thoughts?
