Google crawling item page reviews
-
Hi Moz community,
I've been trying to do some on-site work and noticed that our product pages reviews may not be totally optimized. It used to be that all of the text from the reviews appeared in the actual code of the page, but now none of that text appears, so it may not be getting crawled. The change was most likely released when we had an item page redesign. However, when I Google a review snippet, it does seem to come up, so maybe Google is crawling that data despite it not being SEO optimized.
Is this really an issue if the review snippets are showing up in search, there's been a lot of talk that Google is now better at crawling javascript.
Thanks

Thanks for being so thorough with your answer!
I'll have our tech team take a look at the markup. We used to have our review content embedded as part of the html code and I've heard that increases crawl frequency and was also easy for search engines to understand. Now I think we might be using AJAX which apparently causes confusion for crawl bots.

Yes, but you currently have an error in your markup, so Google is not rendering it properly. Please see link above. On-site review markup does not necessarily boost rankings, but can help with CTRs, etc.
But yes, even with the right markup for aggregate, Google could choose to ignore it.
The best way to influence rankings (specifically for local) is to have customers review your business on local review sites(Google +, Yelp, etc.) these do help to naturally increase your local search rankings over time.
Hope this helps,
B

Ok, so you're saying we should have the right markup for our aggregate reviews but that even with the correct markup Google might ignore this anyway? I was told that our reviews helped boost our rankings in the past when we implemented them years ago. But then again this could be the fact that it was new then and we've had reviews on our site for ages now.
Thanks!

Google's structured testing tool is showing an error in your markup: https://search.google.com/structured-data/testing-tool/u/0/#url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.uncommongoods.com%2Fproduct%2Fintersection-of-love-photo-print
I've also seen plenty of pages properly marked up with Review Markup and G chooses not to use the review snippet.
In your case, because you're using an aggregate review, I would suggest looking here for more info as well: https://schema.org/AggregateRating.
Hope this helps,
B

Hi Britney,
Thanks for your response, here's an example of an item page:
http://www.uncommongoods.com/product/intersection-of-love-photo-print
I want to make sure that the new way we've set up the reviews don't interfere with Google being able to crawl our review content. We used to have our review text coded in our page code and I was certain Google could crawl our reviews section to gather out user generated content. Now that our page is using JavaScript it might be harder for Google to crawl....When I Google any snippet from a review it shows up in search so it seems like this isn't really a problem?

It could be that the search engine cache the content from when it was there. You could submit the page for reindexing and see what happens but you do risk losing your page position.
The honest answer is that I don't know, but it is definitely in the search engine interest to look at JavaScript content, it is used widely now for content and is sometimes used to trick the search bots. I wouldn't be at all surprised if your site is fast enough loading the JavaScript that search engines would potentially look at it.
However, it would definitely be better if it was hard code on the page.

Hi Zach,
Your review markup is showing up in Google but not your actual web page? Could you please link to an example?
Is the issue that you like the review snippet to also show up within your site?
Thanks,
B

Why would the review count be different between the Ad and the Organic result?
A client inquired about this after finding that their review count was different on their Google Ad that appeared in the map pack compared to their organic result right below it. I am stumped so any thoughts or reasoning as to why this is the case would be appreciated. See attached screenshot! Lptujep

Poor reviews and ratings
I have an interesting challenge for a new client. Basically, they collect payment from gym users whose monthly subscription payment has failed, and they charge the gym user a fee and not the gym. Their clients love them for this, but the end consumer hates them and as a consequence, every review or ratings site from Google Reviews to Trustpilot is universally filled with angry consumers who didn't read the Ts and Cs of their gym membership. Understandable, but it also means the client can't have a presence on any social channel as they simply become a gripe board for disgruntled consumers. My question is, how are the poor reviews impacting on rankings and domain authority and should I treat this like any other client in terms of fixing crawl issues and seeking quality backlinks or am I always going to be pushing water uphill? Cheers gang!

Potential Ethical Conflict: Google My Business Paid Reviews
I've been sitting on this for a while due to The Busies. So if this is nothing new, feel free to lash me several times with a somewhat moist noodle. And in that event, I promise not to make it weird. 😉 I use the Rewards application, from Google. Long story short, you fill in some demographic information and you receive Google Play credit when you complete surveys. It's a nice way to get a book, app, or music for little effort. But after giving a friend of mine a ride to a local hotel, I've received multiple survey requests that relate to that hotel brand. And it asks me to drop a local review, for extra Google Play credit. How is that ethical? Their own docs clearly state there is no way to pay for better local ranking, but they also admit reviews can improve local ranking. So isn't soliciting reviews, for any sort of compensation, at least a bit unethical? What are your thoughts? Attached are screenshots of the solicitation and GMB documentation. w4hEe

How to obtain url for G+ review?
Hi Mozzers, Is there a way to obtain, easily, the URL for my company's review page on Google+? It's easier to send a link to my customer than to explain how to let a review. Thank you for your help and your time. Regards, Jonathan

Want to use Google Business Pages but Spam Reviews are putting me off
Not sure if I am missing something here...I have phoned and asked Google business how they deal with reviews which are potentially fake and damaging to a business reputation, it seems there is very little a small local business can do about them other than report the review with no guarantee of anyone helping ...Has anyone else had this issue as I would really like to use this service to assist with rankings on google? It is hard to convince (and to be honest I don't want to have to convince!) a local business that this is a good service at the same time as informing them they will more than likely have to spend extra time fending off fake reviews...Not seen any good answers anywhere else, ignoring the reviews, adding more positive reviews or replying/managing reviews are not an option. Hope someone can help with this, thanks

Google Reviews
We operate a printing company, and at the moment we have two locations in Houston, Texas. Our newest location just opened and so it has no reviews and no real content on Google +. A very satisfied customer seems to have posted two back to back reviews on the second location and it now seems that location no longer pulls up. It used to be that when you googled our business name that both locations pulled up it seems to pull just first more well established location. The second location can still be found but for whatever reason it no longer shows up with our other results. Should we tell the client to remove one of the reviews? I hope we don't get penalized for this Appreciate your feedback. C

Do schema review numbers have to be manually updated?
Hi! I've had success with review schema rendering in SERPs but have had to manually code the numbers and update those numbers as more reviews come in (which is a bit time-consuming). Is there a way to use auto-generated numbers that will still render schema or do those numbers have to be manually added? I've looked at the schema for sites like IMDB, and their schema numbers seem to be manually added, which seems like a huge lift. Advice/input is appreciated!

Re Posting Reviews
I would like to re post a couple short client reviews on the home page of my site. The reviews are from avvo.com. What is the best way to accomplish this without getting flagged for duplicate content? Should I make an image containing the review text and then link it to the original review on avvo?
