HTTPS, free certificates and Google seo
-
As we all know, Google decided to give some weight in rankings to encrypted sites. SSL certificate providers are quite a lot out there, but there is also a free alternative (Let’s Encrypt). I've been going over some of these services and compared Godaddy's and the above certificates, and there isn't much of a difference.
The question is: using a free certificate would have the same effect as a paid one? I would rather pay for one than be punished for using a free one, but free would be good too.
What's your take on this?Thank you

If there are redirects on your site from http to https, I believe the best practice is to actually leave your old sitemap in place in the http property, as well as submitting the new ssl sitemap to that property.
We learned this AFTER recently moving from http to https and most of our URL structure changing as well. However, with 301s set up for as many site URLs as possible, we saw the new ones gain in indexation and rank rather quickly, even without the old http sitemap.

Thank you for answering my question! Another one if I may ask: how do you add the website to Google Console? Let's say my site is site.com
I have already added in Google Console the following
www.site.com (as preferred version)
and now adding https://www.site.com
I have removed the sitemaps added to www.site.com and added them into the https://www.site.com, but is that all that needs to be done? Unfortunately the site move tool Google provides does not take moving from http to https into account.
Thank you

Letsencrypt is a great way of offering SSL. It's backed by a LOT of big organisations: https://letsencrypt.org/sponsors/
"using a free certificate would have the same effect as a paid one? I would rather pay for one than be punished for using a free one, but free would be good too."
I am confident that as long as the site is secure, the level of encryption does not matter. As then SEO would become "pay to win" which I don't think is the case. -
Hi Adriana,
The whole point of an SSL certificate is so that the browser has a reasonable degree of trust in the server's public key for HTTPS transactions. As per my opinion SSL has advantages for SEO and also for creating trust with the website visitors.
Do the SSL certificate actually matter, you should read this study / research http://blog.searchmetrics.com/us/2015/03/03/https-vs-http-website-ssl-tls-encryption-ranking-seo-secure-connection/
Generally, browsers come pre-loaded with lists of people/organizations that the browser should trust. When your website presents this certificate to a browser and the browser would unquestioningly accept it (assuming that you've paid a sufficiently well-known CA (certifying authority ) that is likely to be in the trusted lists of all browsers).
Now, it's the trust level of these CA which matters to the browsers and search engines, then there are risks / disadvantages of using free certificates. Check following links
https://www.cybersecureasia.com/blog/the-risk-in-free-ssl-certificate
https://www.quora.com/What-are-the-pros-and-cons-using-a-free-SSL-Certificate-for-signing-and-encrypting-email
https://www.volusion.com/ecommerce-blog/articles/5-reasons-you-should-beware-of-free-ssl-certificates/Coming back to original question, whether free vs paid SSL would matter for SEO, on the surface, it looks it won't matter if your CA has enough trust with browsers, however, if you scratch the surface there are some hidden facts which are highlighted in the disadvantages of a Free SSL mentioned on above links.
It would be better to get a paid certificate, be safe and secure without being worried about if it would hurt your SEO.
I hope this helps, let me know if you have further questions via your response.
Regards,
Vijay

HTML Site SEO (NO CMS)
I have got a client site, which is dated (2007) and has not been shifted to any recognised CMS yet. It is HTML based. Is it possible to SEO on such a site? Is it even worth it? If it is possible to do SEO on this, any suggestions will be highly appreciated. Thank you.

Product Descriptions & SEO
I got another small question for my price comparison website that I run 🙂 An example product from my site, to which this question relates http://goo.gl/XDTUNs I have about 600 products which I track, and the product description I have for each is as follows; Paragraph 1 - Standard copy which is contained on all products, only the product name / keyword is changed "Easily compare prices below on a XXX" Paragraph 2 = Blatant, 100% copy of the product description from Amazon Paragraph 3 - Standard copy which is contained on all products, only the product name / keyword is changed "Always read your chosen stores product description before buying your XXX" Firstly, I am now on a mission to create unique descriptions instead of the Amazon ones I foolishly copied. My question is, are the standard paragraph 1 and 3 which are in all my product ok? Or should this be avoided? Should my unique description be paragraph 1, or can it remain in the middle? The reason for the three separate paragraphs was so I could mention to keyword 3 times, which is what is suggested on the Moz page grader. Thanks so much!

Is my megamenu negatively impacting my SEO?
Hello everyone, I have a megamenu with 87 links in total. We offer a ton of products, so when we decided to have this developed, it seemed like a no-brainer because a straight drop-down menu was really hard to digest. But I have been wondering if it is creating too many links on every single page and/or muddling the signals to the search engines. If anyone could take a look and give me their insight, I would really appreciate it. Thanks, www.cleanedison.com

Blocking Google seeing outbound links?
Apart from rewriting the outbound url to look like a folder 'abc.co.uk/out/link1' and blocking the folder 'out' in the robots.txt file, along with also nofollowing the links as well, is there anything else you can do?

References and SEO?
Hi Everyone, I am really new to the SEO world (having come from paid search), so if this is a stupid question, I apologize. I noticed in Webmaster Tools that the top 25 keywords or so that Google thinks my site is about are keywords pulled from our references pages. Our site has a ton of authoritative content, most of which have corresponding reference pages with overlapping sources. Is this a problem? I am a little concerned that the keywords Google thinks are the most relevant to my site are really the least relevant. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks! nina

Google Place Pages - Definitive Guide?
Hi good folk of SEOmoz, I've recently updated a number of place pages for my client who is an estate agent. I have to admit that they were a little keyword stuffed, but at the time my competitor; who ranks first, was filled with keywords. For example in their title it states "[company name] estate agent [location]" I thought that this was a big no-no and it should not be done? They also have keywords stuffed into categories and description. Im confused on how they are getting away with this? I have searched on the Google place page support forum and can not find a definitive guide on the exact rules. Could anybody be so kind to help me out? i.e Where to put keywords and locations in the title and categories Thankyou.

Why isn't Google indexing me?
Recently got handed off a .org site for a quasi state agency here in Michigan. Turns out the developer had the site live for the past six months but left the noindex, nofollow tag on everything so the site was invisible to search engines. Obviously we wiped all of those things a couple weeks ago when we got started, added all of our sitemaps to bing/yahoo/google webmaster tools and we've already started getting indexed by yahoo and bing and showing up for branded terms...but NOTHING from Google. WMT says our pages are all indexed, but we aren't showing up for anything in search and we don't seem to be indexed at all. Granted, if this site was brand new and didn't have any links I could see us taking a little time to get found, but this site has very good .gov and .edu links, plus we've built some other solid links to it since we've launched and Google continues to ignore it. I haven't seen this before, but could Google still be ignoring us from the months of noindex, nofollowing? If so, any tips on how to get back in teh Google's good graces here?
