Conveying Farmer Update To Client
-
I work with a site that saw their super competitive top terms drop off page one with the Farmer update. So, #4 to #12.... that kinda thing.
In the last year they've added a huge catalog of 500,000 item pages. The catalog has climbed to a 76% bounce rate, where as the handful of top pages is in the 20s +/-.
To date, I haven't had much of anything to do with the catalog.
That makes for a sitewide average bounce rate of almost 70% which has almost doubled in the past year as the catalog has ramped up. The catalog gets a ton of search traffic and sells a lot of items via that organic traffic.
I'm advocating for a variety of measures, including cleaning up the catalog:
-
301ing out of stock pages to the homepage
-
301ing 100% bounce rate pages who've had hundreds/thousands of visits over time..
-
Improving the user experience.
-
Offering rainchecks for out of stock items.
They generally don't believe that the huge bounce rate (bad user experience stats) is hurting their top terms on their top pages. They see it as two different issues.
Any thoughts on how to present evidence that the catalog is the culprit? In researching it, I found these two quotes:
"In particular, it's important to note that low quality pages on one part of a site can impact the overall ranking of that site," the Google spokesman said.
and...
"Google spokesman told PCMag that sites that believe they have been adversely impacted should "extensively evaluate their site quality."
Not only that, but the item descriptions are straight from the manufacturer, so the pages aren't that unique text-wise.
Any industry standard on catalog page bounce rates?
Not that it's the only possible area of SEO improvement, because it's not. I thought those quotes were pretty conclusive, but I guess not. Is there some straight-from-Google additional info to suport this? Or, am I just wrong to focus on user experience... bounce rate, pages, time on site, etc?
Thanks!
- Mike

You think the catalog duplicate content hurt the top terms on different pages?
I can't see how I would replace the manufacturer's description on a half million items/pages. Do you?

The Panda update had nothing to do with bounce rate and everything to do with shallow and duplicate content. If you feel your content is not shallow, low quality or copied, then your rankings dropped because you may have had a lot of links from websites there were shallow, low quality or copied. If the pages don't have unique text, then that right there could have hurt you. I would advocate putting unique, relevant, original text on all these catalog pages.

Drop in featured snippets and sessions following algorithm update
Seemingly following the Feb 2021 algorithm update (passage indexing) our site has seen a massive drop in featured snippets (from 39 on 8th Feb to 27 on 15th Feb) and hasn't recovered (still 27 on 18th March). Our site has also seen a steady drop off in sessions in the UK over the past couple of weeks, despite continued increases in the US. This could potentially be due to the loss of featured snippets meaning less traffic to our top pages, but we're wondering if this could also be another change, separate to featured snippets? Does anyone know if these changes are likely to be linked to the passage indexing algorithm update (or another unconfirmed update) or simply a coincidence and either way, what we can start doing to see our number of featured snippets (and then hopefully sessions) start to increase again? EDIT: As of 22th March, these have dropped again to just 10 featured snippets - a total of 290% decrease - any help would we appreciated! TIA 🙂

Traffic cut-off since Google core update
Hi all, I am the webmaster of www.chepicap.com/en (Cryptocurrency news), and since the 3rd of june (Google core algorithm update) we got the hammer from Google. Organic traffic dropped with 90%+ overnight. We are still in the dark whether we can do to improve the current situation. Does someone have suggestions regarding this issue?

What is your hypothesis why Panda/Penguin recoveries happen over months after an algorithm update rather than over night?
We have experienced many scenarios were ranking recoveries from clear Panda and Penguin penalties on our sites don't necessarily happen with the launch of a Panda/Penguin update but instead trickle back in over weeks and months after a confirmed algo update. A good example is shown in the image which shows a panda recovery for a high volume keyword. What is your theory why these ranking recoveries happen over weeks vs instantly? qCWliLF

Does my website need the SSL Cert / HTTPS Update?
So, I own a car shipping company called Car Shipping Carriers ( www.carshippingcarriers.com ) and I am trying to find out if I need the SSL Cert / HTTPS for the site. I attached a picture that shows I dropped a HUGE amount of rank back in the beginning of August 2014 and that the SSL/HTTPS update happened at nearly the exact same time. I do have a quote box on my website asking for: Name, Phone, Email, Origin, Destination, Move Date, Year/Make/Model of Vehicle, and Carrier Type. I was unsure if I needed the HTTPS because I am not asking for sensitive data, but it seems that I might need to bite the bullet and update the site to HTTPS. What do you all think? Any expert opinion and/or advice? JWV4N1o

Recent Google algorithm update?
Two of our clients have experienced a huge dip in organic rankings during the past week or so and we haven't done anything that would cause this. Have there been any major Google changes reported lately? I'm not seeing anything reported here: https://moz.com/google-algorithm-change. Thanks for your input. Eric

Google above the fold update
Hi everyone, Ever since the Jan 19th Google 'above the fold update' I have noticed some strange ranking changes in some of my sites. 1. rankings increased dramatically (not in top 50 to page 2) on Jan 19th for about 5 days then dropped out completely from the top 50. 2. our rankings then did the same thing again around Feb 2nd for about 5 -6 days then has bottomed out ever since. We do not have any ads on the site but our pages are dominated by images for most of the 'above the fold' section then followed by the content down the page. Any insight into this would be much appreciated. Cheers, Andrew

Working in the world of Google Farmer Update
So I know have seen how my websites have taken a nose dive from the google farmer update most likely with traffic significantly hit. Example site is callcatalog.com. What recommendations are there to deal with the new world order? How can we look at optimizing, changing, modifying our process to improve rankings and traffic?
