How to deal with Pages not present anymore in the site
-
Hi,
we need to cut out from the catalog some destinations for our tour operator, so basically we need to deal with destination pages and tour pages not present anymore on the site.
What do you think is the best approach to deal with this pages to not loose ranking?
Do you think is a good approach to redirect with 301's these pages to the home page or to the general catalog page or do you suggest another approach?
tx for your help!

Tx Tim for the answer, it make sense.
I explain you in more details my site structure:
site.com/destinations - hub for all the destinations
site.com/destinations/tanzania - single destination page
site.com/tours/tanzania-tour-1 - single tour page
site.com/travel-category/cultural-tours - a second way tour are organized, for travel category.
So lets say i dont want to sell anymore the destination Tanzania and all his related tours. In the case i want to keep the ranking for the destination and tours i would need to 301 redirect the destination Tanzania to the more general page site.com/destinations and the site.com/tours/tanzania-tour-1 page to site.com/travel-category/cultural-tours since this is a cultural tour.
Does this make sense?

I wouldn't divert them to the homepage, the content has to be relevant. As Tim says keep them or redirect/create a page that does have relevant content.

completely agreed with Tim.

Hi there, I think this is a mixed question about meeting the needs of SEO and your customers. You could naturally allow some pages to 404 if you no longer wish to rank for a specific location or as an alternative you could as mentioned above 301 certain pages to a new page of a similar or relevant topic/destination.
Managing a users experience and not having a 404 is probably best, maybe a specialised landing page which keeps the destination is of use... you could use the page to still rank for this destination, but maybe suggest alternatives within the vicinity, this might be useful for hotels on a local level and still lead to conversions. For larger scale alternatives say at a country level this may be more difficult as the user is probably already set to visit a specific destination, as such a 301 to a higher level category maybe more appropriate unless you want to clarify to the user that this location is no longer available.
If you still wish to rank for these old pages/destinations, it is probably best to keep them in place or redirect to a similar page.
Hope that is ok.

Bigcommerce only allows us to have https for our store only, not the other pages on our site, so we have a mix of https and http, how is this hurting us and what's the best way to fix?
So we aren't interested in paying a thousand dollars a month just to have https when we feel it's the only selling point of that package, so we have https for our store and the rest of the site blogs and all are http. I'm wondering if this would count as duplicate content or give us some other unforeseen penalty due to the half way approach of https being implemented. If this is hurting us, what would you recommend as a solution?

Blog Page Titles - Page 1, Page 2 etc.
Hi All, I have a couple of crawl errors coming up in MOZ that I am trying to fix. They are duplicate page title issues with my blog area. For example we have a URL of www.ourwebsite.com/blog/page/1 and as we have quite a few blog posts they get put onto another page, example www.ourwebsite.com/blog/page/2 both of these urls have the same heading, title, meta description etc. I was just wondering if this was an actual SEO problem or not and if there is a way to fix it. I am using Wordpress for reference but I can't see anywhere to access the settings of these pages. Thanks

How to stop crawls for product review pages? Volusion site
Hi guys, I have a new Volusion website. the template we are using has its own product review page for EVERY product i sell (1500+) When a customer purchases a product a week later they receive a link back to review the product. This link sends them to my site, but its own individual page strictly for reviewing the product. (As oppose to a page like amazon, where you review the product on the same page as the actual listing.) **This is creating countless "duplicate content" and missing "title" errors. What is the most effective way to block a bot from crawling all these pages? Via robots txt.? a meta tag? ** Here's the catch, i do not have access to every individual review page, so i think it will need to be blocked by a robot txt file? What code will i need to implement? i need to do this on my admin side for the site? Do i also have to do something on the Google analytics side to tell google about the crawl block? Note: the individual URLs for these pages end with: *****.com/ReviewNew.asp?ProductCode=458VB Can i create a block for all url's that end with /ReviewNew.asp etc. etc.? Thanks! Pardon my ignorance. Learning slowly, loving MOZ community 😃 1354bdae458d2cfe44e0a705c4ec38dd

Website SEO Product Pages - Condense Product Pages
We are managing a website that has seen consistently dropping rankings over the last 2 years (http://www.independence-bunting.com/). Our long term strategy has been purely content-based and is of high quality, but isn’t seeing the desired results. It is an ecommerce site that has a lot of pages, most of which are category or product pages. Many of the product pages have duplicate or thin content, which we currently see as one of the primary reasons for the ranking drops. The website has many individual products which have the same fabric and size options, but have different designs. So it is difficult to write valuable content that differs between several products that have similar designs. Right now each of the different designs has its own product page. We have a dilemma, because our options are:A.Combine similar designs of the product into one product page where the customer must choose a design, a fabric, and a size before checking out. This way we can have valuable content and don’t have to duplicate that content on other pages or try to find more to say about something that there really isn’t anything else to say about. However, this process will remove between 50% and 70% of the pages on the website. We know number of indexed pages is important to search engines and if they suddenly see that half of our pages are gone, we may cause more negative effects despite the fact that we are in fact aiming to provide more value to the user, rather than less.B.Leave the product pages alone and try to write more valuable content for each product page, which will be difficult because there really isn’t that much more to say, or more valuable ways to say it. This is the “safe” option as it means that our negative potential impact is reduced but we won’t necessarily see much positive trending either. C.Test solution A on a small percentage of the product categories to see any impact over the next several months before making sitewide updates to the product pages if we see positive impact, or revert to the old way if we see negative impact.Any sound advice would be of incredible value at this point, as the work we are doing isn’t having the desired effects and we are seeing consistent dropping rankings at this point.Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you,

Post Site Migration - thousands of indexed pages, 4 months after
Hi all, Believe me. I think I've already tried and googled for every possible question that I have. This one is very frustrating – I have the following old domain – fancydiamonds dot net. We built a new site – Leibish dot com and done everything by the book: Individual 301 redirects for all the pages. Change of address via the GWT. Trying to maintain and improve the old optimization and hierarchy. 4 months after the site migration – we still have to gain back more than 50% of our original organic traffic (17,000 vs. 35,500-50,000 The thing that strikes me the most that you can still find 2400 indexed pages on Google (they all have 301 redirects). And more than this – if you'll search for the old domain name on Google – fancydiamonds dot net you'll find the old domain! Something is not right here, but I have no explanation why these pages still exist. Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks!

Home Page .index.htm and .com Duplicate Page Content/Title
I have been whittling away at the duplicate content on my clients' sites, thanks to SEOmoz's pro report, and have been getting push back from the account manager at register.com (the site was built here and the owner doesn't want to move it). He says these are the exact same page and he can't access one to redirect to the other. Any suggestions? The SEOmoz report says there is duplicate content on both these urls: Durango Mountain Biking | Durango Mountain Resort - Cascade Village http://www.cascadevillagehotel.com/index.htm Durango Mountain Biking | Durango Mountain Resort - Cascade Village http://www.cascadevillagehotel.com/ Your help is greatly appreciated! The course of action to move my macro site to some mini sites- justin if you can help
We have a site that we want to break up into mini sites but keep the old site for the major brands. Empirecovers.com is the major and we want to break it off into Empire Truck Covers and Empire Boat covers. What I am thinking of doing is linking from the home to Empiretruckcovers.com instead of a mini page on the site and 301 redirect the mini page to empiretruckcovers.com. Than (there wont be duplicate content) making a small page for truck covers on empire just so people do not get confused. Is this the best way to go or what do you suggest? We are doing this because I feel there is seo value in having mini sites and also the user experience will be cleaner and people will trust it a lot more than inside a big site. The other problem is I have some great rankings on the pages so I want to do it so there is as little damage as possible. I guess once I start I will do all the free directories, yahoo directory and try to get links as fast as I can. Any suggestions would be great. I am going to do a/b testing to see if my adwords convert better on mini site or on the big site for certain keywords too
