Best Practices: Mobile & Desktop Ad Design for Adwords?
-
Is it possible to have Google Adwords display different page versions according to whether an advertisement will be displayed on a mobile or desktop device?
We are a commercial real estate brokerage based in New York City. Most converting website use desktop rather than mobile. We are considering advertising on Google Adwords. Is it possible to have Google serve a more elaborate form of desktop landing page but have Google serve a stripped down version to mobile users? The stripped down version would be created using Instapage. From a technical perspective how would we create a more elaborate desktop version and have Google distinguish between the two?
In our experience, mobile converts much less. How much less should we bid for keywords displaying on mobile?
Thanks!

Hey,
I'm sorry, I was talking about Ad groups. Here's an example of how I would set up my campaign with your example.
I would set up four campaign separate campaign which is
loft space, loft space - mobile, medical space, medical space - mobile
then within those campaigns, you can have different ad groups to target the set of keywords of the products.

Hi Joseph:
Thanks for your response!
I absolutely intend to A/B test with different versions of designs, calls to action and text. I am new to Adwords so a few questions please:
A campaign is meant for a product? So let's say "loft space" and "medical space" were products, I would set up a different campaign for each, and the campaign would contain different ad groups, which would be different text ads. Is that correct?
But I don't understand the concept of extensions. What is an extension?
Thanks,

Hi Sean:
I assume we can set up the 2 landing pages on Instapage and then use on of the 4 methods to have the ad served according to whether the user is viewing on a desktop or mobile device, is that correct?
How long does this take to set up? 15 minutes an hour? Pretty simple to do or takes some skill?
Can we use the Worpress plugin? Our website is on Wordpress and the ads will be designed using Instapage.

Hello Alan,
Since you're already using Instapage just want to make sure you're aware there are an A/B test features. You can also set up more than one Adwords campaign and multiple ad extensions based on how many version you would like to test.
Make sure you set up the conversion tracking properly so you will be able to know in future how much more or less you should bid for a certain keyword on a certain platform or channel. There's no way to tell without running an actual campaign and start collecting data
I recommend running the campaign for few weeks with max conversion goal settings and then optimize accordingly.

Yes there are 4 options:
- If You're using CloudFlare you can specify a sub domain for mobile version
- Joomla and Wordpress offer several plugins for this particular function
- Utilizing Javascript window.location
- Most commonly my preferred method .htaccess
RewriteEngine On # Check for mime types commonly accepted by mobile devices RewriteCond %{HTTP_ACCEPT} "text\/vnd\.wap\.wml|application\/vnd\.wap\.xhtml\+xml" [NC] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/$ RewriteRule ^ http://m.domain.com%{REQUEST_URI} [R,L]

Should Mobile Header Design Use Big White Area for Large Male Thumbs when 65% + of Visitors are Male?
About 65% of our visitors are male. Consultant "A" produced design "A" (see attached). This design incorporates large white areas so there there is sufficient space for male visitors with larger fingers. Consultant "A" also was of the opinion that the menu "hamburger" bar should have the word "menu" under it and that displaying it would increase conversions. Consultant "B" is of the opinion that displaying as much content above the fold is key to maximizing conversions. They believe that we don't have to use so much space between elements and that the word "Menu" is not necessary to display beneath the hamburger. I have enclosed design "B" from consultant "B". Personally I prefer the 2nd design, however I understand that conversion is down to a science and there are certain accepted protocols and standards that serve to increase conversions. Does anyone have opinion as to which of the 2 attached designs would work best for conversions? Thanks,

I am confused on adding Google+ authorship markup to a multiauthor WP blog
The blog for a client is at http://blog.multiview.com . I am not sure how to tell them to add Google+ authorship tags to the site, and link the posts to the individual G+ profiles of each individual author. One source shows it is highly complex, seesee http://searchengineland.com/the-definitive-guide-to-google-authorship-markup-123218 However, in the Google webmaster account, there is a real simple explanation, i.e. https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/2539557?hl=en Considering that this is an area that is very murky for me, is one of these directives out of date? Is one preferable? How complicated would that be, for this particular blog?

Analytics (Other Than Google) & A/B Testing Tools
Hey, I have Google Analytics on my website, like most people, but I was looking at some other analytics and testing tools like heat maps, click maps, A/B, etc. I was hoping that some of you could recommend a few that you use to see where pages are going wrong, track user behaviour and to how improve conversion rate. I have had a look at a few websites like: https://www.clicktale.com/

Best Shopping Cart Recovery Service?
With GA's Real Time view of visitors to our Web store I see how many are "shopping" at our site. It's a bit frustrating to watch and then NOT get very many orders. I am wondering about the value of shopping cart recovery services and which one is the best. I would also like to know what the best ecommerce converting sites are.

How to set an appropriate Adwords max CPC?
How do you gauge setting your initial max cost-per-click for specific keywords? For example, you have a keyword that has an estimated "first page bid" at $6.25. If you are wanted your ad to show competitively with your competition, how much should you start at? Two times the "first page bid?" Three times? I'm working on revamping some ad campaigns to help with our paid marketing expenses. I do have quite a budget to work at, but we are hoping to cut down some of this cost. We just spent the past few months trying to spend our way out of some poor quality scores and CTR's. Our metrics have improved drastically, now I want try and cut down our CPC, which is over $19! Our ROI is hard to calculate due to the fact that it can take a few years to obtain profit from the market we are in. Our conversion rates are over 9% from paid advertisement to leads (which is pretty decent for our market). I am all eyes and ears on this subject... I am ready to start playing around with prices tomorrow to see how we fare, in hopes I get some solid responses before then. Thanks in advance!
