A grade optimised posts not showing in SERPs
-
Hi all,
I've been using Moz to research, optimise and grade a broad range of copy and blog posts over the years. After the optimisation process I've always seen a relatively quick improvement of pages/posts in SERPs.
I am currently working on a new website launched earlier in the year on a subdomain. There's a sitemap, fresh content added every month and the site has an verified Google Analytics and Search Console account. The content is quite niche with low traffic data for related terms, however, I am finding that after three or four weeks the optimised posts aren't displaying in the top 50 results in Google.
These are the posts:
https://sykeshome.europe.sykes.com/cut-the-cost-of-customer-support-use-a-work-at-home-model/ - optimised for "Cut the cost of customer support" (and also "Cut the cost of customer support: use a work-at-home model")
https://sykeshome.europe.sykes.com/quality-and-compliance-in-a-work-at-home-environment/ - optimised for "Quality and compliance" (and also "Quality and compliance in a work-at-home environment")
As a new website launched on a subdomain there aren't currently any inbound links, but I wanted to know if I am simply being impatient in expecting the above posts to rank higher (if only slightly), or if there could be a reason optimised content with a Moz A grade isn't showing in the first 50 results.
Any advice or pointers would be much appreciated.
Jonathan

A good example of how not to write and optimise a blog post https://mynewsfit.com/why-to-use-royalty-free-music-in-content-creation/
-
Great! Happy to hear that all worked out!
-
Quick update: this did just turn out to be a case of me being impatient with a new website. A few days after my last post (above) all the optimised pages started showing high in SERPs. The info on supporting inbound links is very helpful however.
-
That's great, thanks for clarifying and for all your advice, it is much appreciated.
-
The links don't necessarily have to be from the same websites that are linking to the top results. They'll need to be from relevant websites or relevant pages & articles to your website.
-
Many thanks for that advice, it is very helpful.
To clarify, do I need to build inbound links from the websites that are already linking to the top results in Google for the exact match search, or, do I need to build inbound links from more related websites that help support the nature of my content (which also help Google to understand that the copy is about work-at-home solutions for businesses, and not work-at-home job opportunities)?
-
Well with the recent updates from Google, we're seeing a shift from exact-match search results to satisfying searcher intent. So based on the query "Quality and compliance in a work-at-home environment" and the search results page, it seems Google is trying to satisfy the intent behind the search by providing different types of results - when I checked the top resulting pages, I can see that they are very different in what they offer and the information they hold.
In the case of the pages you shared, there are probably more factors that need to be considered besides optimizing the page to match the exact query. These include the internal & external links to these pages and the content/topics of the pages that are linking to these pages.

Thanks for the feedback, it is much appreciated. When I search for the optimised term "Quality and compliance in a work-at-home environment" the first results are actually completely irrelevant - they are basically job sites advertising quality and compliance jobs, and they don't have anything to do with dealing with quality and compliance when working from home (which is what the post is about).
Isn't it odd that a search for the optimised term "Quality and compliance in a work-at-home environment" doesn't even bring up the post in the first 200 results? I've never had that before - I've had optimised pages appearing on page 1, 2, 3 or 4 of SERPs dependent upon competition, but I've never optimised posts and not had them show at all (even for an exact match search).
Obviously, in the first 200 results there are a lot of low domain authority sites, so I'm still baffled as to why the optimised pages aren't showing at.
At the moment this isn't about ranking higher, it's about being ranked at all. Any ideas?

I heartily agree with this answer

Hi JC,
I can see that the pages are indexed and showing up when running a "site:" search . So you're good on that front. The fact that its not ranking high enough is probably due to a number of factors. I would suggest running a query for what you think each page should show up for, and seeing what's actually ranking in the first page. Check the content of the ranking pages, the main website, and run a high-level backlink analysis to give you an idea of what you're up against.
Once you identify the gaps, you'll get a good idea of what needs to be done to rank higher.

Should I redirect off topic blog posts?
We launched a store on top of a popular blog. The blog had nothing to do with the store. The blog has a lot of backlinks and traffic, but our store is now our primary business. I am concerned that the off topic blog content may be affecting or ability to rank better for the core store business. Should we delete or redirect the old blog content to another website to improve the SEO for our store?

Post migration issues - #11 + configuration issue
Hello Moz community. I'm keen to find out your experiences on the following: Have you ever experienced a migration whereby a large % of keywords are stuck in position #11 - post migration? The keywords do not move up or down (whilst competitors jump from 13 to 9 and vice versa) over a three month period. Please see the % difference in the attached e-mail. (sample 1,000 keyword terms) Question: Has anyone ever experienced this type of phenomenon before? If so - what was the root cause of this and did this happen post migration? What solution did you use to rectify this? Have you ever seen a cross-indexing issue between two domains (each domain serves a different purpose) post migration, which impacts the performance of the main brand domain? I will explain a little further - say you have www.example.com (brand site) and www.example-help.com (customer service site) and the day the brand website is migrated (same domain - just different file structure), www.example-help.com points to the same server that www.example.com is on (with a different file structure) and starts to inherit the legacy file structure. For example, the following is implemented on migration day: I will explain a little further - say you have www.example.com (brand site) and www.example-help.com (customer service site) and the day the brand website is migrated (same domain - just different file structure), www.example-help.com points to the same server that www.example.com is on (with a different file structure) and starts to inherit the legacy file structure. For example, the following is implemented on migration day: For example, the following is implemented on migration day: www.example.com/fr/widgets-purple => 301s to www.example.com/fr/widgets/purple But www.example-help.com now points to the same server where the customer service content is now hosted. So although the following is rendered: So although the following is rendered correctly: www.example-help.com/how-can-we-help We also have the following indexed in Google.fr - competing for the same keyword terms and the main brand website has dropped in rankings: www.example-help.com/fr/widgets-purple [legacy content from main brand website] Even when legacy content is 301 redirected from www.example-help.com to www.example.com, the authority isn't passed across and we now have www.example.com (as per Q1) a lot lower in Google than pre-migration. Question: Have you ever experienced a cross-indexing issue like above whereby Google potentially isn't passing authority across from legacy to the new setup? I'm very keen to hear your experiences on these two subjects and whether you have had similar problems on some of your domains. E0hbb

OSE link report showing links to 404 pages on my site
I did a link analysis on this site mormonwiki.com. And many of the pages shown to be linked to were pages like these http://www.mormonwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Planning_a_trip_to_Rome_By_using_Movie_theatre_-_Your_five_Fun_Shows2052752 There happens to be thousands of them and these pages actually no longer exist but the links to them obviously still do. I am planning to proceed by disavowing these links to the pages that don't exist. Does anyone see any reason to not do this, or that doing this would be unnecessary? Another issue is that Google is not really crawling this site, in WMT they are reporting to have not crawled a single URL on the site. Does anyone think the above issue would have something to do with this? And/or would you have any insight on how to remedy it?

Schema Markup Showing On Some Pages But Not Others
We have implemented Schema markup for Reviews on product pages. All these pages check out in the Markup Checker Tool in Webmaster Tools, but out in the wild only about 50% of them are actually showing the Review markup in SERPs. Example of a page showing Review markup successfully: http://www.cloud9living.com/los-angeles/drive-a-stock-car And example of a page not showing markup in the SERPs: http://www.cloud9living.com/las-vegas/race-a-ferrari Any ideas on why some SERPs show markup and others do not? Thanks!

Show wordpress "archive links" on blog?
I here conflicting reports on whether to show wordpress archive links on the blog or not. Some say it is important for viewers to see, others say it is not and creates way too many links. I think both have good points but for SEO purposes, I lean towards removing them. What do Moz users think?

Google badge extracted to SERPs
It's a while ago that (i thought) I read the following information on the Google badge. Here https://developers.google.com/+/plugins/badge/ we have the implementation guide, however I was under the impression the Google badge could be thereafter extracted into SERPs so the user could follow etc... direct from SERPs. I can't find anything confirming this. I think that it might clash with authorship data which does a similar job, but where a site page is not relevant to authorship at all, I would have thought linking back to the G+ page from SERPs was a sensible option. Can anyone confirm the Google badge can appear in SERPs?
