Random important product pages dropped out of index week ending Dec 22: why???
-
Hello
We've been around a very long time, and I have a long running pet set of core terms and pages tracked using Moz and other tools. With no changes to the content or site or htaaccess or robots.txt or sitemap, insignificant backlink changes etc, we saw a ton of important product pages drop out of the index the week ending December 22 2019. We are still ranking for many of the terms associated, but at far worse positions since the pages G is choosing instead for those terms are not as focused. I need to be clear that this has not happened across the board, but seemingly at random.
When I look in G Search Console, the pages are submitted and indexed (last crawl yesterday), mobile friendly, have breadcrumbs, and the only warning are product level for lack of optional fields under offers (nothing new, not particular to the dropped pages in question here).
So, what happened the week ending December 22???? Should I expect the dust to settle and the pages to return? Extremely strange.
Thx

That very much sounds like, for some reason Google has gone from viewing that particular page template as "decent, worthy of rankings" to "ok, will rank if I can't find something better". One thing I am wondering, if you have been hit by this: https://moz.com/blog/google-review-stars-drop-by-14-percent
... which is also related to this:
https://webmasters.googleblog.com/2019/09/making-review-rich-results-more-helpful.html
Specifically where they say "Self-serving reviews aren't allowed for LocalBusiness and Organization. Reviews that can be perceived as “self-serving” aren't in the best interest of users. We call reviews “self-serving” when a review about entity A is placed on the website of entity A - either directly in their markup or via an embedded 3rd party widget. That’s why, with this change, we’re not going to display review rich results anymore for the schema types LocalBusiness and Organization"
It seems as if 'something' existed on your product detail pages which Google was valuing highly, which they no longer value at all. Thus you aren't seeing complete drop-off, but a high correlation between declining (or removed) results and pages utilising that feature
Basically self-hosted reviews and some embedded reviews 'no longer count' towards Google rankings (at all). The news broke in September 2019, but I wouldn't be surprised if the roll-out was more recent. Moz posted that they noticed movements on Sept 24, which is very nearly November. As we know, these types of updates tend to slowly crawl across Google's query-spaces, it's not often true that everyone gets hit at once
Maybe your site is just in the late batch

Hi
Thanks. Yeah, the thing here is not just a rank decline, it is the page dropped from the index altogether. Google instead choosing a different page from our site to rank for the same terms, but at a lesser position. Confirmed page dropped using site: www.domain.com searches. This is an ecommerce site with some 5,000 distinct product pages. We are not new, we've been around with an ecommerce site since 1997. The current site has existed in current for ~14 years. Again, it's seemingly random product detail pages being dropped. No manual action, no site errors (500 etc), no redirects or other problematic factors.
Roughly 1/3 of all tracked keywords in our long-running Moz pro campaign experienced either rank declines and a different page from the site being returned for the search, or suddenly not ranking whatsoever due to this matter of pages disappearing from the index. We are talking about product detail pages with >100 customer reviews and other UCG, tons of backlinks etc.
Interestingly, a handful of pages and terms seem to have corrected overnight. Not all - but a handful. We updated sitemaps yesterday and added some sketchy domains to our disavow file last night. None of the "usual suspects" types of issues explain this phenomenon.

According to Moz there haven't been any significant algorithm updates since October 2019 - https://moz.com/google-algorithm-change. If you check Algoroo (https://algoroo.com/) there's some noise on Dec 20th but it's not 'out of this world' or crazy. Looking at SERPMetrics Flux it doesn't look like a time of major changes on Google: https://serpmetrics.com/flux/
It must be something specifically related to your website or your website's presence (backlinks etc). It could also be a factor of operating in a competitive query-space. Maybe your results didn't go down, maybe the rankings of other sites went 'up'
I wouldn't expect the problem to 'just go away on its own', that almost never happens

How many pages should we optimise?
I have more than 250 pages on my site including my products. Is it a good idea to optimise each page with a unique keyword or is there a limit to the number of pages we should aim for?

Google indexing
Hi In my site I have 2 blogs, the first blog is a standard blog, every post is informative and over 6oo words with pictures and all of them are keyworded. The second blog is basically a journal of bike rides i go on, with a picture and about 100 - 300 word writeup. I use a portfolio plugin to get this online. My question is should I noindex nofollow all of these posts. Im not sure if google will see it as a lot of uninformative noncene, I dont write these as blog posts they are a journal I post 1 or 2 a day. What is the normal practice for this... they are not keyworded or seo'd I dont want them to affect my seo or rankings. Thanks Chris

How would you target alternative names for your product with the use of internal/landing pages?
Recently, there has been some new industry names that have emerged for the type of software we provide and we want to make sure that we rank for those terms (of course!). The 3 names combined are too long for a title tag and would look odd to incl all 3 in the homepage. Any suggestions (or examples) of how this could done without looking spammy? I also don't really know where to put this within our website. e.g. enterprise portal, enterprise information portal (EIP) or corporate portal Any suggestions would be most welcome

How much SEO value does a fashion site get from bolting text onto the bottom of home page? Does the value compensate for cluttering up a page focused on an iconic image?
Getting ready to launch a completely redesigned site for a fashion designer. Since it is a fashion site, visitors do not need text to describe what the site is about., We are weighing three options: 1) clean design with no text (just images and navigational links), 2) bolting on a couple of sentences of text at the bottom of the page to signal keyword terms to the search engines, 3) following the lead of the top ranking site in the category and adding lots of text to the bottom of the page. Do the SEO benefits justify cluttering up the design by bolting text onto the bottom of the home page, and if so, how many characters of text seem to be the minimum to be effective?

E-Commerce product pages that have multiple skus with unique pages.
Hey Guys, With the recent farm/panda update from google i'm at a cross roads as to how I should optimize product pages for a project i'm working on for a client. My client sells tires and one particular tire brand can have up to 15 models and each model can have up to 30 sizes. IE: 'Michelin Pilot Sport Cup' comes in 15 different sizes. Each size will have it's unique product page and description bringing me to my question. Should I use the same description on every size? I do plan on writting unique content for each tire model however i'm not sure if I should do it for every size. After all the tire model description is the same for every size, each size doesn't carry any unique characteristics that I can describe. Thanks in advance!

Do we need to use the canonical tag on non-indexed pages?
Hi there I have been working in / learning SEO for just over a year, coming from a non dev background, so there are still plenty of the finer points on-page points I am working on. Slowly building up confidence and knowledge with the great SEOMoz as a reference! We are working on this site http://www.preciseuk.co.uk (we are still tweaking the tags and content by the way- not finished yet!) Because a lot of the information is within accordians, a page is generated for each tab of the accordian expanded, for example: http://www.preciseuk.co.uk/facilities-management.php is the main page but then you also have: http://www.preciseuk.co.uk/facilities-management.php?tab=0 http://www.preciseuk.co.uk/facilities-management.php?tab=1 http://www.preciseuk.co.uk/facilities-management.php?tab=2 http://www.preciseuk.co.uk/facilities-management.php?tab=3 http://www.preciseuk.co.uk/facilities-management.php?tab=4 http://www.preciseuk.co.uk/facilities-management.php?tab=5 All of which are in the same file. According to the crawl test, these pages are not indexed. Because it is all in one file, should we add the canonical tag to it, so that this is replicated in all the tab pages that are generated? eg. Thanks in advance for your help! Liz OneResult

Avoiding "Duplicate Page Title" and "Duplicate Page Content" - Best Practices?
We have a website with a searchable database of recipes. You can search the database using an online form with dropdown options for: Course (starter, main, salad, etc)
On-Page Optimization | | smaavie
Cooking Method (fry, bake, boil, steam, etc)
Preparation Time (Under 30 min, 30min to 1 hour, Over 1 hour) Here are some examples of how URLs may look when searching for a recipe: find-a-recipe.php?course=starter
find-a-recipe.php?course=main&preperation-time=30min+to+1+hour
find-a-recipe.php?cooking-method=fry&preperation-time=over+1+hour There is also pagination of search results, so the URL could also have the variable "start", e.g. find-a-recipe.php?course=salad&start=30 There can be any combination of these variables, meaning there are hundreds of possible search results URL variations. This all works well on the site, however it gives multiple "Duplicate Page Title" and "Duplicate Page Content" errors when crawled by SEOmoz. I've seached online and found several possible solutions for this, such as: Setting canonical tag Adding these URL variables to Google Webmasters to tell Google to ignore them Change the Title tag in the head dynamically based on what URL variables are present However I am not sure which of these would be best. As far as I can tell the canonical tag should be used when you have the same page available at two seperate URLs, but this isn't the case here as the search results are always different. Adding these URL variables to Google webmasters won't fix the problem in other search engines, and will presumably continue to get these errors in our SEOmoz crawl reports. Changing the title tag each time can lead to very long title tags, and it doesn't address the problem of duplicate page content. I had hoped there would be a standard solution for problems like this, as I imagine others will have come across this before, but I cannot find the ideal solution. Any help would be much appreciated. Kind Regards5
