Negatives to using custom sub domain?

So - being photographers, we have our main website, but also, we use a hosted service for all our client galleries (www.zenfolio.com)
So, in effect, we have two websites:
- Our main informational website
- Our client gallery/proofing website
The client gallery has back links to our main website - so, when people are viewing their gallery, they can easily get back to our main site. We also have thrown a few of our preferred keywords in there for SEO purposes. The gallery has thousands of pages which link back to the main site.
So.. the client gallery URL can either be: http://ourbusinessname.zenfolio.com OR we can have it so it uses our own domain, such as: http://gallery.ourbusinessname.com
The question is, which domain name will benefit the back links more? Our custom subdomain (which links to our main domain) or, using the Zenfolio domain (which is external to our site). Or, is there no real difference either way?
Or.. do I make no sense?

So - it is all agreed that using my own domain (in some form) is definitely the best option. That's good.
**In regards to Sub Domain V Folder. **
Before tackling that issue fully - Just to be clear, the Gallery is a hosted solution, so, I can not just pick it up and move it to wherever I like.
I can however, create a CNAME record and redirect it that way. BUT Im no expert in this area - I know I can use a CNAME record to redirect to a sub domain, but can you redirect to a folder?

There is a big debate of ourbusinessname.com/xxxx and sub-domains but let's not get into that
The challenge with our not discussing the topic is it leaves blitzna with trying to make a decision, and the results of his decision will differ depending on which route he chooses.
If he chooses the subdomain path: http://gallery.ourbusinessname.com, then he actually gains no ranking benefit at all from the move, and he will lose ranking based on the juice lost from the 301 redirect. There may still be financial benefits from not having to support two distinct websites, but that is not related to ranking.
If he chooses the folder approach: http://ourbusinessname.com/gallery then the main site will increase their DA (assuming the gallery has backlinks or will gain backlinks) which offers a benefit for both the original site and the gallery.
What advantage do you see being offered from choosing the subdomain approach in this instance?

I agree with most of what Mysterio shared, but I prefer a third option that was not mentioned.
If your current site is ourbusinessname.com then I prefer your gallery to be at ourbusinessname.com/gallery
By combining both sites under the same domain, you will combine your Domain Authority from both sites, which should offer a ranking benefit to both sites.

New website showing old domain titles in search
Hello Moz, We have recently built a new website http://www.hegroup.org.uk/ The new site has the domain for one of the clients old sites pointing to it - heartofmersey.org.uk. When we check the SEO index (site:hegroup.org.uk) for the new site, most of of the indexed items are using the old 'Heart of Mersey' title in the index although these do redirect to the new site. See below. Use External Links
Hey 🙂 I noticed when analysing my pages that Moz gives the following advice about adding external links to my articles; "On any page specifically targeting a keyword, link externally to at least one (and possibly more than one) relevant, trusted resources as a best practice." As a small business I work pretty damn hard to get visitors to my website, so why on earth would I want to go to all that trouble just to send them away again to a trusted resouce? Secondly, what exactly is a "trusted resource"? Can I simply use search and use the top competitor, for example Moz or Wikipedia and does the anchor need to be an exact match or will a partial suffice. I say this because I already have the top spot for my longtail, so an exact match would be pointless. And lastly, I notice that pretty much all quality sites use external links to open in the same window i.e. not target=_blank, I never thought of it before today, but now that I'm considering using external linking in my articles I guess it's important to know the answer - i.e. Is this a best practice and does this give any seo benefit? Internal anchor text. Should we still use keywords?
I have a review site that has approximately 70 category pages. I'd like to include a few of them (not all 70) in the footer of the page for easy navigation and to direct the crawlers to the best ones. Is it advisable to use anchor text of "Category + reviews" or just leave it as "Category". I certainly dont want it to be overoptimized, but I do think its a good usability cue, so I'd be surprised if it was against guidelines. Any thoughts?

Sub-pages have no pa
I took over a website a few months ago which is not performing well at all for chosen keywords. When I first inspected it, I found a rel canonical tag pointing to the homepage on every page. This was quickly deleted and all the pages were fetched in webmaster tools. 3 months later and the website is still performing badly. When I use the mozbar, it shows that all of the sub-pages have a pa of 1. It is only a small site and all of the pages are linked to on the navbar in a simple way. The links are not made using javascript and all the pages are on the sitemap which is submitted to wmt. I have checked that all of the changes that have been made have been indexed as well. Could it be possible that google still sees the canonical tag even though its not there? I can't think of any other reason why the pages have no pa or why it is so far behind the competitors despite having better content and links. Also, the site is appropriate for adults, but I found (among the mess left for me) a meta ratings tag set to "general". This has now been deleted, could it negatively affect rankings?

How to fix duplicate issue among multiple root domains

I have 90 domains at Godaddy and would like to transfer them to a new registrar - Moniker
Will the the transfer to a new registrar hurt my domains in the SERPs if all contact information for the domain stays the same and DNS stays the same and site hosting remains the same?
