Impact of Internal VS Inbound Links
-
Internal linking channels juice being accumulated through inbound links and the two work as a team. I am interested to hear from those who have either tested or have a fairly good gut feeling about the impact of internal links on rankings (as an additional signal).
Also in your opinion how does internal linking compare to external links pointing to the same page (e.g. impact of benefit/ranking gained through internal linking + inbound links as opposed to scenario where there is no relevant internal links at all).
Conditions:
- Relevant anchor text used (or close contextual variation)
- Measuring impact on a single phrase (or relevant phrase variation)
- Internal links can be from unlimited pages on the same site (even site-wide)
- External inbound links can be only to the target page (disregarding inbound links to other pages).
- Disregarding layout based navigation as internal links and focusing on content based links only (contextual, editorial links).
For example:
- Internal link ranking impact: 10%
- External link ranking impact: 90%
Since this is a simplified model feel free to provide necessary clarifications below your estimate.
Looking forward to your answers!

I can provide you with a little anecdote but I think internal linking is a reasonably large factor, especially from the home page.
So I have a page, 3 levels deep, absolute tail end of my site and exists exclusively to catch the keyword it's targeting; doesn't provide any information you can't get elsewhere on the site, doesn't have any exclusive offers, just another page on the site.
So I build a few links into this page, nothing exciting; articles, links from my blog posts, manage to find a couple of websites about the topic, but after 3 months, nothing, top 50 ranking (from 120 or so) but not that great. However one day I get a conversion from it, so I decide I'm going to give it a little push and link to it with the main keyword from the homepage.
Boom! Next day, 7th.
The homepage itself isn't that powerful, very low page rank, very few links coming in and there's already about 100 links on it between the nav and the other editorial style links. It's not that the page I linked to wasn't being crawled or indexed but putting a link in from the homepage instantly boosted it.
2 months later the page still fluctuates within the top 10, but I have been building more links into it.
So, flush with this new success I decide to test it on another, very similar, site. Same sort of page, same sort of keyword, same sort of site structure. Difference this time is that I'm not building links to the page in question.
Keyword isn't top hundred so I put the link in from the home page.
Boom! Top 80.
Alright, not as good but a definite twitch. I figure that it's not quite the magic bullet I thought it was (and realistically I can't link to every page from my home page anyway) and haven't really revisited what would happen if I did build links to that page (and a few more to the homepage).
So, anecdotally, internal linking from recent pages and small time link building doesn't do much. Linking from the homepage is a big signal that a page is important. Without external links your internal linking (on a small / low DA website) isn't going to rank you.
I'm going to say it's closer to 20/80 though.

IMHO, internal linking optimization really worth it when your website has reached a pretty large scale (several thousands of pages). More especially, internal linking can have a very great impact if your website provides local content. See real estate websites such as Zillow, Trulia & co. They can rank very well on local searches without having external backlinks on their pages, just because they have a powerful root domain + an excellent internal linking.

Hi Dave, thanks, I am familiar with that article. I am interested in people's personal opinion.

Inbound link is follow link but we put no follow link back - is it beneficial for rankings?
Dear Moz Community, We are operating in a niche market, where there are not so many content marketing options. What we are left with are link exchanging with relevant sites that are on the same topic but to not directly compete with us. Now we know that if we link back to site A and site a links back to us - for google this is not a very good link. But, some of the sites we are exchanging links with, do not know the term follow vs no follow links. My question - if your link is to site A is a no follow link but they give us a follow link - does it mean thats a better option than a follow vs follow. Thanks for help!

Link Value
My question is how valuable is getting a link from a PA 71 with roughly 20 links on it. I guess I am saying how many links from a PA of 30 would be a comparable indicator. I understand there is an almost exponential value of authority as they go higher, but I am looking for a good explanation from a technical aspect. Hypothetical Scenario Would a person be better off pursing 20 links from PA25 pages, or would you be better only getting 1 from the PA71 all things equal.

How much time does it take for the links to be forwarded to redirected link?
Hi there,
Link Building | | MoeezLodhi
Thank you for taking out some time for this question; I have changed the permalinks last week for a website.. I forgot to redirect old permalinks to the new one.. So I did 301 redirection, it has been 4-5 days since I did that but the links are not forwarded to the new Permalink so far.
How much time should I wait for the links to be forwarded to the new permalinks? Secondly, I am sure I have done the 301 redirect correctly, as when I go to the old url / permalink it directs me to the new permalink. So I am sure 301 is done correctly. Do I need to submit the sitemap again?0 -
Blogroll links vs. in author's byline
So, I have the following dilemma. I have certain amount on my budget and I'm thinking where to invest it better. Would you recommend obtaining blogroll links or focus on links that put in author's byline (for instance when you write a guest post). Could you also explain why you think so? 🙂 Thanks beforehand.

When is link building an SEO priority? (vs. something else)
I'm considering hiring an SEO vendor for link building, and assessing whether or not my website really needs link building, vs. another SEO priority (for instance, I KNOW there's an opportunity for local SEO). What factors should I look at to determine if link building is a high priority? Should I just compare the number links my site has with competitors, using a tool like Open Site Explorer?

Can I Gather Inbound Links from Different Subject External Websites?
I am working on link building campaign and trying to gather inbound links from various subject external websites. I have big confusion with this effort. I am working on eCommerce website and getting inbound links from technology related website. So, Does it really matter for better performance? I want to give one example to get more idea. I am selling table lamps on my website and trying to get inbound links from that kind of websites which are highly dominating to table lamps or lighting industry. But, This is not only one case. Sometime, I have opportunities to create inbound links from different subject website. Simply, If I will compile one content for UGC section on SEOmoz and links to my website with table lamps so, Will it help me to rank for table lamps keyword? Exact match hyperlinks on external website always matter::: That I aware about it. But, what about subject orientation. I am Table Lamps monster & you are SEO monster. So, Will Google give benefit to that kind of links which are dominating different subject? I have solved some issues about quality of website after installing SEOmoz toolbar in my browser. Because, I or We are visiting multiple websites during daily stuff and may find out opportunities to drop our website link over there. But, I have fear to drop my website link in any website. Does it really matter quality or website & How can I judge it better rather than SEOmoz toolbar? I have added such a big question with proper declaration but, I want to jump in to link building campaign and want to earn good value after my long term effort.

Value of Inbound Links to Pages With a lot of Outbound Links
Suppose you have a resource page of the Top 50 Awesome Sites in your niche. Since there are about 50 outbound links, then I would think there will be less Page Rank being passed to internal pages from internal links on the resource page. Since you are getting less PR passed to internal pages, are there other ways the inbound links can be beneficial, such as increasing the diversity of links of your domain? Sites like SEO Optimise seem to create a lot of Top 30 Resources lists and I have read that they think it is a strong tactic.
