New Content
-
I am looking to add new content to pages that I currently have on my website. The content on these pages was taken from another provider and my idea is to rewrite the content to make it unique.
Because it is duplicate content, these pages don't get much traffic. Should I add the new content to brand new urls or just change the content on these (already indexed urls).
The issue has seen these pages contain duplicate content. If the content simply changes, will it recognise these pages as having unique content?

Spinning content is okay. Don't use snippets, reword! Rewrite the content on your existing pages first instead of creating new ones.
-
It doesn't really matter if it is on a new or existing page - however, on a new page you can title the new page to be something related perhaps? Then there is the school of thought that says if you have low quality content, get it replaced.

Andy

I am not the originator of the old content and this content gets virtually no hits. I know how to rewrite the content completely and all that.
My question is.... do I put it on new pages or old pages?
-
I agree with this.
Digest the content and rewrite, do not copy any of the sentences. Googlebot is good at picking up this sort of duplication.
Google shouldn't penalise you if you're the originator of the content. As someone said previously, this is usually handled by timestamps of content - who got it into the index first.
My recommendation is to write completely new content, and have it available on new pages. Do not get rid of the old content (especially if you're the originator) as it may still bring you some traffic, and shouldn't penalise you.

So once I have rewritten it completely and utterly, do I put it back on the old page or on a completely new one?

Thanks for the tips. I am legally taking their content. It is laterooms hotel descriptions.

"tip for future content: include things they can't include, like your name, your customers, etc etc"
If only this were the case - one of my large customers has thousands of pages of duplicated content - these scrapers don't bother taking out names sadly.

Avoid spinning content at all costs. By all means read articles, understand them and re-write them from scratch, but don't copy snippets or sentences otherwise you run the risk of coming under the watchful eye of the Google Farmer algorithm - and you definitely don't want that!

Andy

Matthew,
Yes, but it depends the crawl rate that your website is being crawled by search engines.
I would advise removing DC and replacing with unique.
When finished, ping individual pages threw pingoat.com

I'm assuming your saying another website is taking your article content? Are they giving you credit? Timestamps are your friend, I'm going to assume Google will know you are the originator. Create some backlinks pointed to your content.
tip for future content: include things they can't include, like your name, your customers, etc etc

Clarification on duplicate content
Hi, if I have a page that unintentionally ranks for a term that I want to create a page for - say "atlanta apartments" - should I still create a page specifically intended to rank for "atlanta apartments"? Will canonical tags be crucial in this case? Hoping to avoid creating duplicate content and instead create the correct content for a specific term.

Updating Content - Make changes to current URL or create a new one?
I'm working with a content team on a job search guide for 2019. We already have a job search guide for 2018. Should we just edit the content of the job search guide for 2018 to make it current for 2019, which means the job search guide for 2018 would not exist anymore or should we keep the 2018 guide and just create a new web page for the 2019 guide that way both exist. We currently rank very well for the 2018 job search guide.

How Google judge about duplicate content?
With recent Search engines updates one thing is clear we cannot ignore content. Content marketing definitely going to be most important part of our SEO strategy. I have few doubts about content marketing (circulation of content over web) where I want suggestions of community members. There would be different thoughts so I would like to have as many as responses to know what majority thinks: When we are writing guest posts, does article needs to be unique with each and every blog we are writing or we can safely circulate one good piece of content to 10-15 blogs who are interested in our creative. We have written a good blog post for our own domain. Apart from social sharing should it be posted to other related blogs too or it should be unique to our domain only. Social sharing, mentions, like of blog matters in rankings?Seems yes they do but need to know what majority thinks. Finally what is the safe number to circulate your content over web.

Archive older, low ranked content to help new content in Panda 2.2?
After watching the white board friday re: Panda 2.2, it got me to thinking about old content. One of the sites that I work with generates 3-10 new articles/day (movie reviews, interviews, guides, event previews, etc) and has been doing so since 2005. Now, they have almost 10k articles, 7k of which are indexed. The quality of the content varies, and much of it is dated (movies, events) much of the amount of older content gets 0-5 pageviews/month, made in the days BEFORE the site was using Google News + social tools to spread the word (and backlinks). Note that those older articles also of course tend to have 100% bounce, and small/zero TOS. Is this hurting the site? With 75-100 articles/month being published, I want to make sure they get maximum exposure. I'm also concerned that crawlers get sucked into the site chasing down old BS content, and that is hurting it as well. What to do with this content? Should I unpublish unpopular, dated content and get it off the internet? Or, do I leave it on, but NOINDEX it so Google won't crawl it?

For a consumer facing blog, how often do you recommend updating content to develop good rankings? I understand that it's really dependent upon the niche/competition, but what are some best practices? Content is expensive. Thanks
