No-Follow Tag and Advertising

Hiya! I've got a relatively new domain, and one of my goals is to be 100% white hat, squeaky clean as I really would love to see my site succeed in the long term.
So far my linkbuilding efforts are going pretty well.
I'm beginning to buy some ads, and some of the bloggers I'm buying ads from don't use advertising networks, they just host your jpeg from their own blog... For the little picture that will show up in the side column of their blog should this be no-followed? And if it's not do we know if google assigns a penalty?
I'm ok with asking the blogger to do that, but I notice my competition is not (and I know they know better) so I feel like it puts me at a bit of a disadvantage.
Secondly - I'm 100% avoiding sites that sell text links (even ones with high pagerank, like pagerank 6), is this the right path to go?
I read this article from Matt Cutts and was wondering if this is still true, reputable sites that sell links maintain their pagerank but aren't able to pass pagerank?

omg thanks for sharing these articles. i am literally sitting here, laughing while i read them. just at the ridiculousness of it all.
does everyone get a friendly letter if they are selling links or is only forbes receiving such a thing? seems like favoritism if that's the case. not cool imo.
i'll go with the super squeaky clean and no-follow mine, and grumble all the way
so much bad behavior out there (or people who just don't know about no-follow) that it's really tough to find high pr sites that are willing to write about you AND are following all of the no-follow rules on their content (let alone not selling text links lol)... -
I do not think it is still entirely true that sites who sell links will not themselves be penalized (cf. Forbes). On the other hand I recently saw Graywolf joke about how the paid links from this high PR site pass PageRank. I would be curious to know whether anyone out there could demonstrate that paid link penalties for either the linking site or the site being linked to were algorithmic. And if they're not, we should expect them to be sporadic and inconsistent. In which case, if you are trying to be squeaky clean, it seems you should nofollow the links, and it seems that such would necessarily put you at a disadvantage to your competitors who are not. However, some of them, if successful enough, could get hand penalized by Google.

Been offered a no follow link on a blog post ?. Is it worth it ?
Hi All, We are having a go at doing our own link building and just wanted some advice on a couple of questions I've found some industry related blog sites which could be good but alot of them only offer a no follow link ?. Is this worth it ? And if ,so what is the advantage of having a no follow link ? as it won't directly help with our DA etc ? I've also noticed some of these sites link to each other or recommend each other (i.e other blog sites) which may be some sort of link network ?.. I take it this is bad ? and could be penalized by google ? thanks pete

Links from Directory Websites with NoFollow Tag
In reviewing our root domain links, I noticed that many of the directories (like Yellow Pages, Insider Pages, Merchant Circle, etc) that there are no follow codes included in the link to our website. Is this a common practice for these directories? Also, I wanted to confirm that this would not help in our link building strategies with any relevant "link juice." Below is a copy and pasted (with some extra characters that shouldn't have copy and pasted), but the key note here is the no follow tag that was included in this link to our site. Exchanging Follow/No-Follow Links with Parnter Site
Hi all, Wondering how Google would interpret the exchange of a no-follow link for a follow link between partner websites. I have a potential referral relationship with a business in my niche and we are hoping to cross-market. The goal would be for my link on his page to be a follow link, while the link to his business on my page would be a no-follow. Would my site get the benefit of a natural link in that scenario or would the two essentially 'cancel each other out' regardless of the follow/no-follow nature of the link? H tags
I am hearing all about the benefits of H tags and I tried to use them in my wordpress blog. The way I did, I used the paragraph drop down and made the selected text h1 or h2 , but size of these tags are huge . Can you help me what is the trick? Also, Can I have more than one H2 tag. For example my article title seems to be H1 by default(by the wordpress) then can I make just my subtitles in the body of the article H2. Then I will have for example 5 H2 sentences spreaded all over the body. Thanks

Do Follow- Social Media sites
Does anyone have a list of do follow social media network sites. I am looking to list some of my customers on social media network sites, but having the bonus of do follow to pass link Juice is an extra bonus. Most of my customers have Twitter and Facebook profiles- but these happen to be no follows. I am looking for more social media sites that are do follow. I did see an article on this- on SEM MOz I believe but I cant find it. Any suggestions?

Searching for Quality "Follow" Back Links
I'm in a highly competitive national market where the top sites have links from between 325 and 1300 unique linking root domains, therefore, you have to have an aggressive approach just to get on the map. (I'm at 317) If we were talking about needing 50 good links, I could take the time to cultivate relationships, get to know people, and get 1 or 2 great links from each webmaster, but the scale of the challenge is out of control. My competitors, and myself, seem to all be getting links in the following ways: Hoards of directory links. Some high quality paid links from industry sites ($2,400 per each link per year) and hundreds from 9-$49 per year. At the bottom of the list of most all my competitors, there appears to be some links from their early beginnings that were reciprocal linking arrangements. Blogs where they submitted articles and have good links back to their sites. Paid ads on sites all over the internet that link back with their specific key words. Some from relevant sites, but mostly from sites that would give them a good deal and have high enough traffic and/or page rank. Blog comments with a link back to their site; sometimes with good anchor text and sometimes you're forced to have to use your web site address as the anchor text or even your name. (Does that even do any good?) My dilema is where to find 1,000 good places to get links and I don't do black hat? I can write good quality comments on blogs from a wide variety of industries, but most are now eliminating the possibility of using my anchor text other than my web site and my name. As I scour the playing field, it almost appears that it has become a "pay to play" proposition as far as getting links everywhere other than writing good blog articles, but then what good does it do to have 500 blog articles coming from a handful of linking root domains? You're just stuffing the ballot box! As for me, I'm in the teens with all the high value phrases I need and must come up with a better strategy for the home stretch. In all the other varied statistical measurements that I see on SEO Moz, I'm no lower than #5 out of the top 10 competitors in any of them except Alexa rank. So, I'm close but it seems so far away! Would appreciative and be grateful for some wisdom from the community! Lowell

Product Giveaways and No-Follow
If a blogger is given a product from a company for a giveaway contest on their blog, does Google require the link to the company have a no-follow. This seems like a gray area but I can't find any guidelines put out by Google about this.

Is there a way to leverage paid advertisements placed in industry specific publications to get SEO benefits?
Is there a way to leverage paid advertisements placed in industry specific publications to get SEO benefits? I am looking to advertise in publications like trade journals or magazines, but want to also reap SEO benefits by getting a link. So I am avoiding buying banner ads, but instead trying to find opportunities for links from editorial mentions, quality article or editorial submissions, etc. Advice on the link proposition, or best way to approach editors, please? Many of these publications are traditional print publications, and their sites are really seo'd. Thanks.
