Keyword Self-Cannibalization Concern
-
Right now I have an E-Commerce website that has layered menu properties. I have one page trying to rank for "NextGen Digital Ballast" that is the main category page. However, on that category page I link out to three product pages which would be "NextGen 400W Digital Ballast", "NextGen 600W Digital Ballast" and "NextGen 1000W Digital Ballast". The on page ranking factors tools is saying I may need to consider making adjustments because of the potential self-cannibalization, but I wanted to get some feedback to see what others thought about that. Thanks.

Thank you everyone for the help. I feel confident that we can just continue on like we are, and if I notice any issues, then I can try your suggestions of the keyword order and also following the examples of that blog post. Thanks again!

Great discussion and suggestions here already, but I wanted to add this post in case you haven't seen it: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/tactical-seo-how-many-termsphrases-should-i-target-on-a-single-page
There's lots of good stuff in the comments there, too.

The idea here is conception. Google will conceptually see the difference between an elephant and a baby elephant as being two different items.
Although it should see your products as different, the warning comes from page apparently being the same- no distinction.
If you find you are not ranking well, or more so, someone slipping inside your ranking, try 400W NextGen Digital Ballast and 600W NextGen Digital Ballast
I do agree with EGOL that for a few pages this should not be that big of a deal, but changing the order of keywords here should not be either.
I hope that helps

Thanks for the response EGOL. Right now we have 3 different brands of digital ballasts. We have our main digital ballasts category, then we have NextGen, Phantom & Lumatek digital ballasts, and each of those all have the NextGen 400w digital ballast, the Phantom 400W digital ballast, the Lumatek 400w digital ballast, also for 600w and 1000w.
Where I get confused, the example of the on page optimization states that if you are trying to rank for elephants, then you can use "baby elephants" as a different page. Isn't this what I'm essentially doing then? I have digital ballasts, but then they are also broken down into 400w digital ballasts, 600w digital ballasts, NexttGen 400w digital ballasts, Lumatek 1000w digital ballasts, etc.

It depends upon how many very similar pages you are going to have. If you have dozens or more then a cannibalization potential is very real. However, if you only have two, three, four then that gives you the potential to have multiple pages in the SERPs. Nothing like having #1, #2, #3 and #4 for a query.
For small numbers it is more of an opportunity than a problem.

Hyphens in Keyword
Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone had any experience of whether Google treats keywords with hyphens differently. One of my websites main keywords is 'buy to let', however all across our website it is referred to as 'buy-to-let'. People always search without the hyphens. I recently heard that Google may only treat us as a highly relevant match and not an exact match for this keyword. I was wondering if anyone had any experience of this, and what is the best course of action to take. Thanks

Keyword keeps fluctuating between a high rank and no rank?
I've searched around and I can't seem to find anyone else describing the issue I'm seeing. Basically for a very long time our website (snappages.com) has always ranked in the tens and twenties for "create a website". It's a high volume keyword and we get a lot of traffic from it. Around May 16th it suddenly disappeared completely from search results on Google and now it will sporadically show back up with a SERP in the twenties every 5-10 days for a few hours and then completely disappear again. This pattern has continued to this day. I've checked and there are no manual penalties and nothing has really changed dramatically from a content perspective or anything like that. I would understand if we got penalized and our ranking dropped, or even if it just completely disappeared? This is the only keyword that this is happening for, all the others remain unaffected. Anyone know how I can find out why this is happening or have suggestions on how to fix it?

How fast to change keyword rich anchor text
Hello, A client of mine has a site with almost all keyword rich anchor text, The problem is on on a bunch of little blogs and some (mostly sitewide) paid links. We are working to move into 100% white hat SEO, but we're doing it slowly. My question is, how fast can we change the anchor text on all of these links? I'm worried that if I do it too fast that it will be a red flag. Thanks.

How many keyword links is optimal for Press Releases?
After the Penguin update I've read differing opinions on how many keyword links is best to use in press releases. We've been using 3 different keyword links, plus our home page url brand link. Does anyone have any solid information on how many links is best in google's opinion? I hate to put too many in and have them think it's spam, or over optimizing for unnatural linking. Thanks folks! Ron
