Registering a domain for multiple years
-
Does registering or renewing a domain name for more than a year improve search as a result of a more trusted site and company that will seem to be around for longer than just a year?
-
@billslawski Hi Bill, It's great to see you. I hope you are doing well.
Most of my domains are on the registrar's automatic renewal. Although I have a couple domains set to automatic renewal but I have prepaid them out beyond my reasonable lifetime - cause I don't want to rely on the registrar and I don't want to take a chance that I might forget. If I get SEO benefit for that, great!
-
@egol Most domain hosts charge one year at a time and set credit cards on auto-renewal so that people don't need to remember to renew their domains. When I asked my host about renewing for 3 years after reading this patent, they told me that I was the first person to ever ask them that and that most site owners were fine with one year at a time, and auto-renewal being set on their credit cards.
It is very unlikely that only spammers set domain registration for one year - it seems that both site owners and hosts set them up for one year at a time, with auto-renewal possibly set.

lol... Alan, you really surprised me with this answer!
Maybe CRS should be added to all of the SEO glossaries?
-
Quite often. At least once a year I get a call or email from someone saying "where'd my site go?" and it turns out the domain expired, they didn't see or get the email notificaitons, and some scraper stole the domain. 80% or more of those turn out to be CRS
-
Alan, Have you seen any proven cases of CRS?
-
Seriously - what EGOL said. I've never once seen a case proven where length of registration helped or harmed a site. It's a false flag factor.

Bill Slawski reported a few years ago in a post on his SEO by the Sea blog http://www.seobythesea.com/...
.... that google included length of domain registration in a search patent application. This does not mean that they actually use length of registration in the algo, just that they said that it might be a factor.
A few months after reading that I added a ten-year extension onto the registration for all of my important domains. I didn't see any increase in my rankings.
I doubt that this is an important factor... and my decision to extend registration was based 1/2 of the google patent and 1/2 of the fact that I have a mental disorder known as CRS (can't remember shit) and I want to be sure that my domains don't expire.

Lost ranking after domain switch
I recently migrated from https://whitefusemedia.com to https://whitefuse.com. The website URL structure and content remained the same and I followed all the best practice guidance regarding checks on the new domain and appropriate 301 redirects. I have seen traffic drop by about 50% and the traffic that is still coming through is mainly coming through links still listed by Google under the old domain (https://whitefusemedia.com). Is this normal? Should I expect to see this bounce back, or is there anything I can do now to regain the rankings?

Domain Change
What is the average organic traffic loss one can expect after switching to a new domain? We went from .com to .org and are seeing 50% decline in organic traffic and 25% in Google news traffic. 301s were implemented from site.com/some-page to site.org/some-page and change site was completed in WMT. This traffic drop seems excessive...

Preferred domain
In GWT it gives an option to do the following but which is best? and why? If you specify your preferred domain as http://www.example.com and we find a link to http://example.com, we'll consider both links the same. | <label for="no_assoc">Don't set a preferred domain</label> |

Campaigns Domain and Subdomain... ?
I made two separate campaigns before I understood the meaning of "subdomain". I make one campaign for my www.com and another for my .com. I now realize I should have made the .com the domain and the www. the subdomain in the same campaign. Is there a way to edit this? Thanks!

Domains and subdomains
When I started a campaign for my message, I got the message: "We have detected that the domain www.vamospaella.com and the domain vamospaella.com both respond to web requests and do not redirect. Having two "twin" domains that both resolve forces them to battle for SERP positions, making your SEO efforts less effective. We suggest redirecting one, then entering the other here." I wasn't sure whether I had said it was a subdomain when in fact it was a domain (or the other way round), so I started another campaign for the same website using the other option and the message didn't come up. However, I still don't understand what you meant by this and whether it's an issue. When I search for my website in Google, it shows as vamospaella.com when other websites come up as www. and then their domain name. If it is a problem, is it to do with my hosting package and how it's set up or is it to do with my local site on my computer? I did ring my web host, 1&1, but they said they couldn't see a problem. Please can you let me know how I can resolve this as my ranking is still quite low in Google and I'm not sure why. If it is because of "twin domains", then will Google see my content as duplicated and keep me low in their rankings? I'm new to SEO and not a website novice, so please answer in lay terms! Thanks Melissa

Multiple Region/Language Solutions
So I understand that this is a fairly broad question but I am trying to work through this on a bunch of different levels with a bunch of different sites that have multiple different issues. First I am wondering if I have an e-commerce site on a .com that is used to serve to different languages and locales around the world. Instead of a Domain.com/ES/ for a site that is supposed to serve Spain and a Domain.com/DE/ for a site that is supposed to serve Germany, we do Domain.com/en_ES/ and Domain.com/es_ES/ for an English and a Spanish version for our consumers that come from Spain. My first question is this a bad way to set this up just from a structure standpoint and my second question is what do I do about duplicate content on different locales but same languages? I am afraid that if I rel=canonical this to 1 region for each language that it may not show up in SE's for other regions but the same language. (Example Brazil and Portugal for Portuguese, Belgium and Netherlands for Dutch, Canada and France for French, Spain and Mexico for Spanish, etc...) Second do the language meta tags actually do anything or not? I am finding mixed opinions on this. Third what is the IDEAL website structure for a website that will serve multiple languages and locales from the same ccTLD? I understand this is not ideal but what is the best setup with this situation? Again I know this is a broad question but I am coming across a lot of e-commerce sites wanting help and dealing with this situation. The duplicate content thing is worrisome and I want good, localized indexing. Thanks!

Delete old site but redirect domain to a new domain and site
I just have a quick query and I have a feeling about what the answer is so just wanted to see what you guys thought... Basically I am working on a client site. This client has a few other websites that are divisions of their company. However these divisions/websites are no longer used. They are wanting to delete the websites but redirect the domains to their name main website. They believe this will pass on SEO benefits as these old division sites are old and have a good PR and history. I'm unsure for DEFINITE, which way is correct?
