Why does my site have a PageRank of 0?
-
My site (www.onemedical.com) has a PageRank of 0, and I can't figure out why.
We did a major site update about a year ago, and moved the site from .md to .com about 9 months ago. We are crawled by Google and rank on the first page for many of our top keywords. We have a MozRank of 4.59.
I figured this is something that would just take time to work out of the system, but nothing seems to change while we patiently wait.
One more thing to note - when a user comes to the homepage (city selector) and selects their region they will then be cookied and directed to their relevant city site on subsequent visits. But even our city-specific pages (ie www.onemedical.com/sf) have pageranks of 0.
My management team keeps asking me about this and I suspect there is something silly that we keep overlooking...but for the life of me, can't figure it out.
Any help would be appreciated.

Google just pushed out a toolbar pagerank update today. http://www.seroundtable.com/june-2011-google-pagerank-13615.html
-
Yes... I am seeing toolbar green on lots of new content today - going back to content published on May 8th.
-
Thanks for checking this out. When I look at the page, it appears to be a 301, but I'm not looking at this with the cookie set. (What are you using to see the 302)?
Regardless, now that we've addressed this, today .com seems to have a PR of 6, and our city sites (ie /sf/doctors) appear to have a 4. Did Google just update?
-
I used 301 redirects on everything using .htaccess.
-
Egol you may have some insight on this: When I did a site analysis on www.onemedical.md it 301 -> www.onemedical.com -> 302 -> www.onemedical.com/sf/doctors if it detects the cookie that says I pre-selected sf on the last visit.
How would you suggest they do instead of the 302 to pass juice to the desired page sf or ny?
-
You are out of luck. I doubt that there is anywhere to get this. If there was a lot of people would be talking about it - especially the linksellers and linkbuyers.
Your management team needs some education or they will be hounding you for this forever.
Management needs to know that PR has not been updated for a long time. They also need to know that they are dwelling on a worthless metric.
Tell them to put their nose into a metric such as profits that is really important.
Hopefully they will not doubt you about this.

Thanks. Is there a way to measure a site's "actual" PageRank (not sure I'm using the right name, or even if I have this concept down...) or is there something else that Google's provides as a proxy so we can understand the relative authority of our site?
Obviously mozRank / mozTrust, but I'm looking for something that my management team might have an easier time accepting...

Toolbar PageRank has not been widely updated for at least a year.
I have articles with PR7 links hitting them since last June and they still have no green showing on the toolbar PageRank.
Moving your domain from .md to .com would temporarily knock your ToolBar PageRank down to zero and it would stay there until the next toolbar PageRank update.
Nobody knows when google will update the toolbar PageRank.
I would not be surprised if they stopped publishing it.

Main Site and eCommerce Site URLs for SEO
My client currently has a main website on a url and an eCommerce site on a subdomain. The eCommerce site is currently not mobile friendly, has images that are too small and are problematic - and I believe it negates some of the SEO work we do for them. I had to turn off Google Shopping ads because the quality score was so low. That being said, they are rebuilding a shopping cart on a new platform that will be mobile friendly BUT the images are going to be tiny until they slowly replace images over several months. Would you keep the shopping cart on a subdomain, or make it part of the main website URL? Can it negatively impact the progress we have made on the main site SEO.

How do you handle Wordpress sitemaps within your site?
I have a regular site map on my site and I also have a Wordpress site installed within it that we use for blog/news content. I currently have an auto-sitemap generator installed in Wordpress which automatically updates the sitemap and submits it to the search engines each time the blog is updated. The question I have (which I think I know the answer to but I just want to confirm) is do I have to include all of the articles within the blog in the main site's sitemap despite the Wordpress sitemap having them in there already? If I do include the articles in the main website's sitemap, they would also be in the Wordpress sitemap as well, which is redundant. Redundancy is not good, so I just want to make sure.

Multilingual blogs and site structure
Hi everyone, I have a question about multilingual blogs and site structure. Right now, we have the typical subfolder localization structure. ex: domain.com/page (english site) domain.com/ja/page (japanese site) However, the blog is a slightly more complicated. We'd like to have english posts available in other languages (as many of our users are bilinguals). The current structure suggests we use a typical domain.com/blog or domain.com/ja/blog format, but we have issues if a Japanese (logged in) user wants to view an English page. domain.com/blog/article would redirect them to domain.com/ja/blog/article thus 404-ing the user if the post doesn't exist in the alternate language. One suggestion (that I have seen on sites such as etsy/spotify is to add a /en/ to the blog area: ex domain.com/en/blog domain.com/ja/blog Would this be the correct way to avoid this issue? I know we could technically work around the 404 issue, but I don't want to create duplicate posts in /ja/ that are in English or visa versa. Would it affect the rest of the site if we use a /en/ subfolder just for the blog? Another option is to use: domain.com/blog/en domain.com/blog/ja but I'm not sure if this alternative is better. Any help would be appreciated!

How to remove a thin site penalty
Wondering if anyone could help out. A while back I made an affiliate store using wordpress and merchants products feeds. I didn't get found to adding any unique content to the site and, as was to be expected, I gained a penalty and my search traffic died. A few months back I redesigned the store, still using merchant csv but now with 98% unique content on each page. However, try as I may I still cannot get anywhere in the engines. The domain doesn't even rank for it's own name!! I have submitted reconsideration request but they have replied saying no penalty on the site. The domain is www.digitalcatwalk.co.uk. While the domain isn't massively strong I would prefer not to have to start again as I feel it is a very good domain name. Any advise would be most gratefully received. Thanks Carl

Impact of Adding a Mobile Site
Hi, we ranked very well for keywords trophies and trophies and awards on our home page, trophycentral.com for quite a while (many years). Recently we dropped off the charts, but are not sure why. So we posted this issue last week and got some great suggestions and are in the process of addressing them. However, we are now wondering if we caused this issue when we launched our mobile site a few months ago (timing makes sense). Has anyone had trouble with a mobile site impacting their traditional site? I am wondering if maybe google is splitting the traffic to the trophycentral domain and the m.trophycentral.com domain? Here is the code we have< script type="text/javascript" src="http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/sportsawards/mobile-redirection.js">script>Appreciate your comments!

Www. version of my site shows nothing in Open Site Explorer
When I first setup my site the domain was learnbonds.com. I moved hosts a couple of months ago and as part of the process I asked them to make the site show as www.learnbonds.com which they did. Now however when I goto www.learnbonds.com in open site explorer it says there is no data. When I enter learnbonds.com into open site explorer it gives me data but says that the site has been redirected to the www. version which shows no data. Also in google webmaster when I try to set the preferred domain as the www. version it gives me the following message: Part of the process of setting a preferred domain is to verify that you own http://www.learnbonds.com/. Please verify http://www.learnbonds.com/. I am concerned that this is hurting my SEO and would appreciate any advice you can give. Thanks Dave

Delete old site but redirect domain to a new domain and site
I just have a quick query and I have a feeling about what the answer is so just wanted to see what you guys thought... Basically I am working on a client site. This client has a few other websites that are divisions of their company. However these divisions/websites are no longer used. They are wanting to delete the websites but redirect the domains to their name main website. They believe this will pass on SEO benefits as these old division sites are old and have a good PR and history. I'm unsure for DEFINITE, which way is correct?
