Trying to understand how a website is getting higher than me with less links
-
Hi i am new to seo and trying to teach myself the best way to improve a site and the best way to use the tools on seomoz.
The problem i have is. i am working on a page at the moment on a site. the page is called weight loss hypnotherapy http://www.clairehegarty.co.uk/weight-loss-hypnotherapy and i have around 130 links going to the page where as a site which is much higher than me in google has only around 5 links.
I cannot understand with being new to seo how this can happen, can anyone please explain what i need to do to improve my ranking please.
here is the site i am talking about that is higher than me www.weightlosshypnotherapy.co.uk/
any help would be great
can anyone also give me a good example of a page before it has been optimised and a page after it has had this done.

I was thinking of the same exact page to post in reply when I scrolled down to find that you'd already posted it. This is dead on.
I absolutely can't wait for search engines to stop placing so much emphasis on domain keywords. I can't tell you how many times I get the dead fish stare from a client when they learn that their business name that they've had for 25 years is NOT the best domain name for their business website.

You'd do well to study this a bit http://www.seomoz.org/article/search-ranking-factors#metrics-1
It has many answers to your Q.

The age of the site and authority of the site is also very important. If your competition have an old site and the five back links are of a really high quality, that may very well outweigh your back links. However, if the site is well respected and old, has great content and offers visitors the answers to their search combined with keywords in their URL, they will be very strong!

It's not how many you have. It's their quality.
PeterM22 points to another good reason - there KW domain is exact match.
-
One possible reason is that weightlosshypnotherapy.co.uk is an exact match domain. The keywords are in the domain name. Google tends to rank these domains much higher, all other things being equal, especially if they are aged exact match domains.
Hope this helps

Duplicate pages coming from links from the login page - what should we do about them?
This is a follow on to an earlier question which was well answered by Dirk Ceuppens regarding abnormal crawl issues. We are seeing that the issues relating to Duplicate Pages are coming from links from the login page which shows information about where the user was redirected from. For example, if the visitor is not logged on and wishes to wish-list an item, they will be redirected to the login page, with the item code and intended action in the url; which can then continue on to the desired page once logged on. The MOZ crawler is seeing these pages as having Duplicated Content whilst they are all the same apart from a piece of information in the URL. Should we be blocking these duplications? Are they a risk to us? What should we be doing? Many thanks, Sarah

Reclaim lost links to old pages?
We recently moved our site to a new CMS and did a complete redesign, with new content. It's really hit our SEO. Open site explorer is telling me there are lots of 404 web pages which were basically old product pages that no longer exist, since the way we have structured the site has changed. So is it worth trying to reclaim these links? If so, how can I do that without building pages at the URL - will a 301 redirect be enough?

Domain or Category Links for E-Commerce Page?
I am trying to rank with my page on a major keyword for my E-Commerce store. Currently, I am ranking on page 4 in SERP:

mydomain.com/category-for-major-keyword Now when people like to link to me, what should I do? Shall they link to: mydomain.com or mydomain.com/category-for-major-keyword What brings me more in terms of ranking for that keyword with my category? Thanks, Robin1 -
How to know exactly which page links to a 404 page on my website?
Hi Moz users, Sometimes I get 404 crawl errors using Moz Pro and when my website has a few dozen pages it is hard for me to find the original page that links to a 404 page. Is there a way to find this automatically using Moz or do I have to look for it manually? I just need to find the original link and delete it to fix my 404 issue. Please let me know thank you for you help. -Marc

Is canonical link enough?
Hi SEOmozers! I have a question. SEOmoz analysis report me some duplicate that I thought I had fix. I can give a concrete example. This page: http://www.nuxeo.com/en/about/events/dec2011training-boston/moreinfo is reported as having 6 duplicated URL in the tool. When I click on 6, SEOMOZ tells me "Our crawl bots are getting their joints greased to fetch you even better data. Sorry for the delay!" And on the page itself, I placed a canonical link to follow recommandation. rel="canonical" href="http://www.nuxeo.com/en/about/events/apr2012training-boston" /> As a result I am curious why I would have this reported as duplicate by SEOmoz. Is this a bug? Thanks for feedback!

Domain Authority: Sites with lower numbers get higher ranking.
We had a question about your online tools for http://pro.seomoz.org/campaigns/30642 The Domain Authority for http://pucherinsurance.com/ is 67: Higher than most of our competitors such as <cite><cite>bluecross.ca which has a rank of 54. </cite> </cite> We show up lower in the actual search results. An example phrase would be Visitors to Canada health Insurance. We get an A grade for onsite reports and we are working on the duplicate content and titles. We appear to be doing everything right but still rank lower than expected. Any thoughts?
