Are Subdomains Beneficial?
-
Are subdomains beneficial? I have a client with 4 stores. As it stands, they use one domain, www.mainpage.com/store1, www.mainpage.com/store2, etc. Are there any big benefits to making these subdomains like store1.mainpage.com, store2.mainpage.com?
-
Thanks for the input. I think I will keep it as one site.

Moving to subdomains is not a good idea in my opinion. Each subdomain will be treated as a separate website and will need to develop its own link popularity. If the stores remain in a subdomain their link popularity is combined rather than divided.
I recently redirected two subdomains of a site to folders in the root domain and the results have been kickass.

Yeah there is no longer any difference in the eyes of search engines between sub domains and sub directories, they're seen as the same thing now... so no SEO benefit in changing.
-
Very good points. The domain authority was what was concerning me. Thank you for your input. I can live with the structure either way. I was wondering if I might be missing something or if there was a "big plus" that would make it worth doing.

Thanks for the quick response. I agree completely. What are your thoughts as far as breaking up an 80 page site into 4 20 page sites?

Chris,
Your client's current set up is ideal. Why are you considering a change?
Currently each store has it's own directory. This enables you to run Google Analytic and other reporting on each store individually. You gain the advantage of having your domain authority for all stores contained in one site. You also can have significant cost savings for product licensing (SSL certificates, trust certificates such as Verisign, payment processing, software licenses, etc) which may each add additional charges for sub-domains.
Based on the information you shared, I am not aware of any SEO benefit to be gained from using sub-domains.

In this case,
I think it's better to have a subdomain with each store. If not better for the SEO, for sure is better to the user understand which one is what he is looking for, make sense?
Also, to keep the files organized and avoid a huge mess.
Hope i can help u.

But help.website sumdomain & pages are not well optimised. So, I am not sure linking these subdomain pages from our website pages hurts our rankings? Thanks,

Is having copy above the fold still beneficial for SEO
Many sites nowadays are approaching a section based approach with copy further down the page. Is it still valid to keep copy above the fold now for SEO. Will it impact on SEO if you have to scroll down the page?

Subdomain pdfs - do you track them?
We've enabled event tracking to monitor clicks to pdfs on our website. All of these pdfs are hosted in a subdomain. The thing is, we offer some valuable pdfs that get a lot of traffic from search engines but I can't track them on Google Analytics. Do you track such pdfs? I can't place tracking code as they are pdfs on a subdomain. Thoughts?

Best Way to Remove Mutltiple XML Sitemaps From Multiple Subdomains
Just found a series of of XML sitemaps hosted like so: http://www.thesite.anothersite.com/sitemap.xml and defaulted to remove and 301 redirect but as this is the first time I've encountered an issue like this, an outside opinion or two would be much appreciated. Is the 301 the best option, should I 404 them or what?

Can "poor" subdomains drop PR of the root domain?
The page rank of my company's website has dropped from a 6 to a 4 over the past year or so. In that time, we implemented subdomains for development sites to show clients progress on their websites. I noticed that our "dev" sites are being indexed while in development and my question is, will Google drop pagerank of our root domain purely off of these "dev" subdomains? Example - our site is www.oursite.com Dev site - development1.oursite.com I just began investigating the drop and this came to my mind yesterday but am not too sure what type of impact these non-credible subdomains will have on our root domain. Any thoughts?

What will you do with the subdomains, keep it or remove it?
A client of us has this webpage http://www.losestores.com/ not very good in design, but it has good products.
Web Design | | teconsite.com
He is having a problem with SEO, he is in page 2 for "estores" keyword. His domain authority is 27 and is upper than other domains that are ranking in page one. The question is the following: Since the webpage began to work the programmer that created it, did the following: a subdomain per section http://estores.losestores.com/ http://cortinas.losestores.com/ http://venecianas.losestores.com/ and so on. This page is not very big one. Will you remove the subdomains and do de following? www.losestores.com/estores www.losestores.com/cortinas What will be best? Thanks Victoria0 -
