  • Hello there ! Let's say my client has 2 webshops  (that exists since long time, so many backlinks & good authority on both) : individuals.nl : for individuals  (has 200 backlinks, let's say) pros.nl : exact same products, exact same content, but with a different branding intended to professionnals  (has 100 backlinks, let's say) So, both websites are 99% identical and it has to remain like that !!! Obviously, this creates duplicate content issues. Goal :  I want "individuals.nl" to get all ranking value (while "pros.nl" should remain accessible through direct access & appear on it's own brand queries). Solution ? Implement canonical tags on "pros**.nl**" that goes to "individuals.nl". That way, "individuals.nl" will get all ranking value, while "pros.nl" will still be reachable through direct access. However, "individuals.nl" will then replace "pros.nl" from SERP in the long-term. The only thing I want is to keep "pros.nl" visible for its own brand queries   ->  it won't be possible through organic search result, so, I'm just gonna buy those "pros" queries through paid search ! Put links on all pages of  pros.nl  to  individuals.nl  (but not the other way around),  so that "pros.nl" will pass some ranking value to "individuals.nl" (but only a small part of the ranking value  ->  ideally, I would like to pass all link value to this domain). Could someone advise me ???  (I know it sound a bit complicated... but I don't have much choice ^^)

  • My website been through many changes the last 5 months. From migrating http to https, server transfer and more. Everything was double checked all the redirects are perfect (301) to the https pages (we have like 28K backlinks so everything needs to be correct), in a matter of fact the migration to ssl made in October and in November the stats went high. The problem is that at the end of November after the server migration the traffic went down and is stably down till today. We re-checked the redirects in every aspect and more in depth and finished fixing issues around end of January. Also before 1 week we stopped the functionality of a parameter (product sort) and removed it from the website entirelly and canonicaled the urls that were using it so if google tries to test those urls with the parameter to see a canonical tag and eventually drop them out of index and stop crawling them. Generally we tried to fix the crawling efficiency and speed. The technical SEO was on fire the last weeks. Still i cant see improvement in rankings, i only see drops. What is the problem here? Where should i look? Any ideas? In webmaster tools we have no 404's and no manual actions. The visibility in Sistrix goes down (check attachment), the ahrefs organic traffic goes down, semrush stats go down... My website is: https://www.pccdkeys.com ecfp87

  • Hello - Wondered if I could get people's thoughts. We/I have started working on a client's website to improve everything - a general overhaul across SEO, on-page optimisation etc. I'm relatively new to this although picking things up and learning on the job which is great, and Moz is so helpful! So far we have conducted a review of the website, created a large list of keywords and analysed these, started overhauling the copy and adding the new keywords within this, have plans to overhaul the other elements of the site (headings, tags etc) and improve the design, functionality and customer journey through the website. My question is: where do I go from here in terms of keywords and SEO? Is it a case of plugging in the keywords we've researched, watch how they perform, and then switch things up with different keywords if they aren't performing as well as we expected? Is it really a lot of trial and error or is there an exact science behind it that I'm missing? I just feel a little as though we've pulled these keywords out of thin-air to a degree, and are adding them into our copy because the numbers on Moz show they should perform well, and they are what we are trying to promote on the website. But I don't know if this is right?! Perhaps I'm over-thinking it...

  • Hi guys, We have a .com domain and we've got geoIP on it, so UK goes to .co.uk and USA goes to .com/us We're just migrating over to another platform so we're thinking of keeping a "dummy" server just to do this geoIP pointing for us. Essentially .com will just point over to the right place and hold a specific .com/abc (which is generic for everyone worldwide) Current Scenario:
    .com (Magento + geoIP)
    .com/us (US Magento)
    .co.uk (UK - geoIP redirect to Shopify)
    .com/abc (sits on Magento server) Wanted Scenario:
    .com - used for GEOIP and a specific .com/abc (for all users)
    .co.uk (UK) - Shopify eCom
    .com/us -> migration to us.xx.com (USA) - Shopify eCom I just wanted to know if this will affect our rankings on google? Also, any advice as to the best practises here would be great. Thanks! Nitesh

  • Are the guidelines of Open Site Explorer's spam score published anywhere? I'm trying to figure out how a page like http://content.yudu.com/Library/A22uap/PARKINGMagazineMarch/resources/25.htm has a Spam Score of 2/17 -- I expect it to be 17/17 It has no visible content, but if you view the source you see very spammy links. c9kyGF

  • Hi there We've run a report today which shows we have 157 pages with duplicate content. Out of these 157, 134 have canonical tags so I'm not sure why they're showing up in the reports as being duplicate. Here's an example, this page: https://www.havaianasaustralia.com.au/Accessories?category=beach-towels .....has an canonical of: http://www.havaianasaustralia.com.au/beach-towels-havaianas-accessories But it's still showing as duplicated in your reports. Any support would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Hi Mozzers, My first Moz post! Yay! I'm excited to join the squad 🙂 My client is a full service entertainment company serving the Washington DC Metro area (DC, MD & VA) and offers a host of services for those wishing to throw events/parties. Think DJs for weddings, cool photo booths, ballroom lighting etc. I'm wondering what the right URL structure should be. I've noticed that some of our competitors do put DC area keywords in their URLs, but with the moves of SERPs to focus a lot more on quality over keyword density, I'm wondering if we should focus on location based keywords in traditional areas on page (e.g. title tags, headers, metas, content etc) instead of having keywords in the URLs alongside the traditional areas I just mentioned. So, on every product related page should we do something like: example.com/weddings/planners-washington-dc-md-va
    example.com/weddings/djs-washington-dc-md-va
    example.com/weddings/ballroom-lighting-washington-dc-md-va OR example.com/weddings/planners
    example.com/weddings/djs
    example.com/weddings/ballroom-lighting In both cases, we'd put the necessary location based keywords in the proper places on-page. If we follow the location-in-URL tactic, we'd use DC area terms in all subsequent product page URLs as well. Essentially, every page outside of the home page would have a location in it. Thoughts? Thank you!!

This is the only site I've worked on that has apostrophes. rel='canonical' href='https://www.example.com'/> It's apostrophes vs quotes. Could this error in syntax be causing the canonical not to be recognized? rel="canonical"href="https://www.example.com"/>

  • Hello, We need to temporarily remove our entire blog from one of our sites. They rely very heavily on the blog content; as the rest of the site does not have much. Is there a 'best' process for going about this? – Should we put a 302 redirect on the entire blog and if so should it be to the homepage or an under-construction type page? Any extra insight or suggestions would be helpful and appreciated. Looking forward to hearing from you! Thank you in advance for the help. Best,

  • Hi Everyone, My company is using an iframe for an About US page because we are having coding issues with our CMS. The content is coming directly from our server. After a couple of weeks passed, I searched for the page in Google and I noticed in the search result that the meta description was using the textual content served from the iframe on the page. Does this mean the iframe we are using is SEO friendly? Thanks, Jon

  • I have 1 campaign (out of 9) that has it's ranking fluctuating wildly from week to week - and in the past 3 weeks, it's tanked, and the next week come back, and this week, tanked again (what I mean by that is Keyphrases ranking #1 dropping to +51 - I had over 20 keyphrases (both local and universal) that were ranked in the top 10 (many in the top 3) that are now at 18 or higher. I have not changed anything on the website in the last 3 weeks, but I've been working with Yoast SEO Pro to add in metadata, titles etc.  The content, managed by the marketing manager, is basically unchanged.  Help!!! This is the second time this has happened and our top competitor went from where we are now to #1 - We've been flipflopping week after week.  Not good. I have also been getting an increased # of 803 and 804 crawl errors. Jon with Moz added me to the next beta cohort, but I can't imagine that this has anything to do with Google ranking.  I have 2 campaigns experiencing a high number of 803-804 crawl errors but only this one with the dramatic ranking and visibility swings. mccdental.com is the domain for the campaign. I appreciate any insight.  Newish client - NOT good.

  • Good afternoon everyone! I wanted to start a discourse on a subject that I think might benefit a few select readers. What would be your best plan-of-action to successfully propose and execute a Local-SEO campaign for a small, local business in a rural town? The type of town that has next to zero local directories, the type of business that has hardly any (if any at all) "fresh mentions" on the internet, etc. I'm interested to see how other SEOs would handle tackling this kind of campaign. Can't wait to hear what people have to say!
    Thanks!

  • Hello Moz fellowship. Ive been learning and following SEO and local optimization for many years. MOZ has been a SEO playbook and bible for me. Im running into a transparency issue with Google and need some help please. I sent Google GMB this email:Hello GMB "Hello GMB There is a bug in your system that revises a previously posted review date to a become a new current post date. The bug occurs when someone updates a previously posted review with new pictures or deletes and updates new pictures. When the deletion occurs and new pictures are uploaded, the old review becomes the new date of the picture updates. This bug allows an old review to become a new review. I can send screen shots and can explain how I found this out if Google would like. Basically it doesn't show a true representation of the time line of posted reviews. Thank you"Google GMB support on the phone says it is not a bug. The problem is that its show non-factual and untruthful timeline information to potential consumers because of the original review date changes. The rep says that example: a reviewer from 3 years ago original review could show up as the most recent review with the most recent date. The main problem is, any consumer shopping and doing research would misinterpret this as being the newest review when it was not. On GMB dashboard the date gets revised to show the latest date. There is no notation that the review is old or that there has been a modification to the original review. So where is the transparency on Google's side to show the customer the actual real date of the review? This problem opens up a can of worms for millennials trying to make it happen and for business owners that are trying their best to become better at their service, etc. Especially when you want the newest review and not something from years ago or months ago or dealing with a potential harassing customer who knows the bug exist and will take advantage of the flaw and constantly update his review so it shows as being the 1st all the time. How does the online customer know this is happening?thank you.

  • Hello ! I am facing a problem concerning a client's website that has been developped using filters that create parameters - there are no categories. This means that, no matter what I choose as a filter, the page title, desc and my H1 stays the same. In a beautiful, unicorn rainbow filled world - I could just tell them to restructure their site with new categories/sub categories AND with filters. For SEO purposes and to find a temporary solution until we can change the architecture, what would be the best choice? Should we create individual pages that serves the same content as the catalog, but with rewritten URL, Title, Description and canonical?
    ie: http:/domain.com/catalog/?brand=moz canonical to http:/domain.com/catalog/brand/moz ? I noticed indeed.com does that (https://ca.indeed.com/SEO-Specialist-jobs vs https://ca.indeed.com/jobs?q=SEO+Specialist&l=) Should we dynamise the content depending on which filters has been selected? Of course, some filters are real filters that wouldn't attract or add any value (such as order by) Thanks for your input!

  • I have my website (HTTP://thespacecollective.com) marked on Google Webmaster Tools as being the primary domain, as opposed to https. But should all of my on page links be http? For instance, if I click the Home button on my home page it will take the user to http, but if you type in the domain name in the address bar it will take you to https. • Hello all, The company that develops our website recently contacted and asked me if we could remove a large amount of URL rewrites. I've described a few factors and my main questions below. Some information: One year ago we did a large migration. We went from 27 websites to one main website. We have got about 2000 rewrites in the htaccess file. And the file is 208kb. A lot of links from our old domains still have incoming traffic which are handled by the rewrite rules mentioned above. Questions:
    The company that develops our website said that the htaccess file is too large and is causing or could be causing us website performance issues. They have asked us to remove URL rewrites.
    My question is:
    a) How many rewrites is too much?
    b) Is the filesize of the htaccess of any importance or is it just the amount of rewrites in the file?
    c) Could we solve any potential server/website performance issues due to a large htaccess file in any other way? Increasing some values like 'post_max_size' or by any other solutions handled serverside? I do not have a lot of knowledge of htaccess rules but I've seen websites that handled over a million of rewrite rules. This is why I'm having doubts on whether removing URL rewrites is the only solution and possibly not the best solution for us. Hopefully you can help me any further and with the best way to proceed without losing traffic or causing 404 pages. Thanks in advance!

  • Hi Moz Community, We were previously doing Content services and Design services. Now, we are only into design service and we have deleted all content services related pages. Our website has many inbound links coming because of the content services pages but they are not relevant to our present service anymore. Will this affect our credibility on google and other search engines? We have applied 410 code to many of these old pages. We have also redirected some of them to the wayback pages. However, they still appear as one of the popular pages. Is there any solution for this? What can we do to do away with many of these inbound links coming to our website which are not relevant anymore to our current service? Your advice is so much appreciated. Thanks!

  • Hello, Our site is an basically advertisements / listings website. Structure is as following <last 200="" adds="">  (homepage trying to rank) < category 1 > < category 1 > < category 1 > < category 1 > < category 1 ></last> My question - each of the categories links back within the  menu back to homepage. The link text currently is last 200 adds. Can i use exact match anchor? Or should i use just last 200 ads? The issue is that one of my categorys (category 1) has already the exact match anchor im trying to rank for. So i can not use the same to link back to homepage. Im worried that google does not see any exact keyword anchor texts back to homepage hence will rank my homepage with lower strenght for that keyword . Im also worried that the category 1 page might now compete with the main homepage for this word (even tho at the moment category itself does not rank for this keyword) Can i link from footer back to homepage with an alternative keyword then to give some "context" to google more? Would this be spamming?

  • Hello fellow Mozzers, In Google's knowledge panel there is a section at the bottom that says "people also search for" and a list of competitors is displayed. I'm hoping to get some information I can use to get my client listed there on top of the local organic results. The more SERP presence, the better. • I have a question about the right way to not index pages: With a canonical or follow no-index. First we have a blog page: **Blogpage **
    URL: /blog/
    index follow Page 2 blog:
    URL: /blog?=p2
    index follow
    rel="prev" /blog/
    el="next" ?=p3 Nothing strange here i guess. But we also have other pages with chance on duplicate content: /SEO-category/
    /SEO-category/view-more/ Because i don't want the "view-more" items to be indexed i want to set it on: follow no-index (follow to reach pages). But now the "view-more" also have pagination. What is the best way? Option 1:
    /SEO-category/view-more/
    Follow no-index /SEO-category/view-more?=p2
    Follow no-index
    rel="prev" /view-more/
    el="next" ?=p3 Option 2: /SEO-category/view-more/
    Canonical: /SEO-category/ /SEO-category/view-more?=p2
    rel="prev" /view-more/
    el="next" ?=p3 Option 3: Other suggests? Thanks!

  • Hi all, Don't know whether this is new, or whether I'm very unobservant and just noticed, but certain results in the SERPs have started listing site links, more akin to Ads. So, if you google 'Department Stores London', you'll see the top listing 'Visit London' has four sitelinks underneath for Selfridges, Debenhams, Harrods and Fenwick. Is this markup? My website has sitelinks if you search for us, but if we appear in a generic list (like this search), then they disappear. Any ideas? Cheers, Rhys

  • 1. Ok so I code my eCommerce site myself first 2. Then switched to Shopify and re-direct all my URLs  (terrible mistake) 3. Then Shopify didn't do in terms of seo, so I switched to BigCommerce and re-direct all my URLs (Yes I know but at least this platform is much better) I started getting 404 errors as you can imagine in webmaster tools after switching from Shopify and there were 504 of them. Why its too many because I realized that Shopfiy just creates so many urls for the same pages. One by one I re-direct them to their new destinations. As you can imagine my rankings dropped. As my site speed is now 5.5s at gmetrix. mobile 47 - desktop 80 on Google Site speed tool. Looking at the links now, some of the 404's does not make sense to redirect. How should I approach this? Should I remove some of them if they were not used on web anywhere, no sites linking to that page and let them die in time? OR Should I keep them all? I am giving some examples below, there are so many for each.
