Optimizing for two nearly identical keywords.
-
Hi Mozzers,
So in one of my campaigns I'm trying to optimize for "Personal Trainer Minneapolis" and "Minneapolis Personal Trainer".
Would the best tactic be:
Develop and optimize two pages. One for each of these similar keywords. (Clearly not the best UX).
or
Try to optimize a single page for both.
Thanks for your thoughts!

I would develop and optimize one website.

My suggestion would be to first focus "Personal Trainer Minneapolis" with the title and H1 tag with the goal of earning a #1 ranking.
My recommendation is after you achieve the #1 spot, try adjusting the title to either improve CTR or to capture additional rankings on alternate keywords.

Thanks Ryan. I was astounded as well by the difference between the two terms. I'm indeed making "personal trainer minneapolis" my top priority.
Makes sense to have one longer page optimized for both. Should I do something like:
Title: Personal Trainer Minneapolis
H1: Minneapolis Personal Trainer
Image Alt: Personal Trainer Minneapolis
Then multiple instances of both in the text somewhere? I'm a little bit worried I'll dilute the positive effect of lining all these the elements for one keyword. But perhaps the competition is poor enough that it won't matter.

Google shows 1000 monthly searches for either of those two variations of the phrase. I looked at both searches and was surprised to see that much variation in the results. I would suggest optimizing your page for "personal trainer minneapolis" but if you can add other variations such as "Minneapolis Personal Trainer" and "Twin Cities Personal Trainer" throughout the page. Go for one longer but very high quality page as opposed to two separate pages. It will provide a better user experience and hopefully better ranking as well.
Make sure you have your Google Places page set up as those results are performing very well.

go for the one, if you optimized for A B C, you will rank for C B A anyhow, if you can get both terms in but dont g un-natrual trying.

Documenting keyword research results
I really struggle to document my keyword research results in a usable way. I know the strategy for finding keywords but I wonder if there's a spreadsheet template or some guidance on the process that could help me organise things better

Focus Keyword
Hi everyone! I am pretty new to SEO so all the help would be great. Does every webpage on our website need a focus keyword for example like the about us page. We have webpages for every location in the UK - Would it be helpful if the location webpages had a focus keyword also? Just to note that I am using Yoast on Wordpress. Many thanks,

Keyword Themes - What's in a theme?
I recently read the Moz guide for "How To Rank - 25 Step SEO Master Blue Print" and had a question on keyword themes. What is considered a theme? Is there a recommended number of keywords in a theme? For example, if my site is for listing and selling cars, would the following terms fit within the same "car" theme or should the terms be broken out by "cars general" / "car locations" / "car types"? Cars Cars for sale in new york Ford Explorer for sale

How many keywords per web page?
Hi, what is the technique for ranking for keywords? Can you optimise a web page for more than one keyword? My moz report is telling me that a keyword I want to rank for is not in the page title, as it stands my page title has one keyword phrase. Sorry for such a newbie question, my understanding is you home page carries the most weight, so you would place your most wanted keywords there? The big question is, how many keywords per page? Google Keyword Tool: What is considered a unique keyword?
I'm trying to research keywords using Google's Keyword Tool. After looking at results, I have the following questions: 1. Does singular/plurals of a word count as two different keywords to Google (ie: photobooth and photobooths)? Would I need to have a unique page targeting each word or will one page on my site be sufficient for targeting both? 2. I've noticed that different variations of keywords have the same global monthly search results. This leads me to believe that Google see's all of them as one keyword. ie: "photo booth props" and "props for a photo booth" and "props with photo booth", all have 22,200 search global monthly search resluts. On the other hand "moustache prop" and "prop moustache" have different global monthly search results (480 and 590). Can anyone explain this?

Help with understanding how to target keywords not in content ?
I have a customer suggesting the use of keywords related to his competitors but not in the content of his site or how he promotes his brand. The page content is product specific and I use keyword matches for page and site strength. 1.) Does it hurt or help to load up the keywords with misc. keywords (example- the site is for a premium product use the terms "cheap", "affordable") 2.) Any suggestion for almost blank/generic landing pages ? 3.) Any benefit or penalty for using fewer keywords on multiple pages ? (example - target 6-8 words on 30 pages) I need a few discussion points for my next meeting and to clarify my position.

Newbie has various questions about keywords
Hi All - Im just learning, would appreciate some clarification on how keywords work. Specifically: For a phrase keyword, does order matter? E.g. is 'Bridging loans UK' the same keyword as 'UK bridging loans'? Again in a phrase, do the keywords need to be adjacent? So if I had a an H1 tag on my page which was 'We provide Briding loans for the entire UK', would this be considered a match for the keyword phrase 'Bridging loans uk' ? As I understand it, optimising your site for a certain keyword involves 2 things at a basic level:a) Including that keyword on your site, and b) Getting relevant inbound links from other sites with that keyword as the anchor text. Is this correct? Are there other large scale factors? What is the balance between those 2 (or more) main factors? Which is most important?
