How long will the 301 ranking swap-over take?
-
Hi all,
I'm about to hit the crunch button and finalise the 301 setup for our website to redirect all traffic, and our old very nice ranking, to our new website. My only question is, how long will the ranking take to move to the new site?
Once the 301 is in place what happens when someone searches my keywords? Currently when you search our preferred keywords we rank 1 and 2 depending on the wording. Once I've made the 301 happen, will you see the old site in Google rankings until they re-index it or will it swap straight away to the new site with its continued high rank (from the link juice) or will I have a blackspot period where I don't rank at all? I cannot afford to have a period of time, at this time of year, that I don't rank 1 or 2 - if this is even a vague possibility I might have to consider postponing my 301 till a less important time of year.
Thanks for your help,
Anthony

Hey,
I had immense trouble with GWT because it wouldn't accept my domain name (.vic.edu.au) and kept coming up with the error 'not a root level domain) even though it was the correct domain. I checked with their bug tracker and several people with obscure domain names had the same problem. It will let me submit the site and use most GWT tools but not the change of address tool and a couple of others - any thoughts on how to make GWT re-index my site faster anyway?
Thanks,
Anthony

I have to agree with Todd here. After you've made the switch be sure to login to GWT to make sure that they know about it.
It wouldn't hurt either to submit the new URL to the SE's as well!
Cheers!

My Past experience finds that rel canonical will transfer faster. than a 301
put two sites online.
Site A add rel canonical from page to page, this will help you in the transition faster.
-
Using the Google webmaster tools site change of address helps. Find it in the GWT Site configuration > change of address area.
Used with 301 redirection, the change usually takes place in about 2-3 weeks, depending on the authority of the domain.

Thanks EGOL,
Know any tools that I could use to do a direct analysis of the sites' ranking / SEO status immediately before and immediately after the 301 has taken place? I know that SEOmoz toolset is good for this but it only crawls every week (or whatever) - I would like to see the differences between the two domains immediately if possible as soon as the DNS change has taken affect (so within 24 hours probably).
Thanks,
Anthony

Just saying what I would do here... not giving advice...
I would do the 301. In my experience the homepage usually 301s quickly and correctly. Its the interior pages that might lag. (You said that the homepage is really the only important page for this site.)
If you don't want to take a chance then take the new site down to avoid dupe content and put it back up after your important ranking season is over - then do the 301.

Hi Wissam,
The site is moving to a new domain but the content is identical.
Thanks for your reply.

Hi EGOL.
Thanks for your reply.
In regards to this particular situation the old site has a pagerank of 5 also and the new domain obviously 1 as it is new.
I really only need the front page of the site to keep its rank.
One big problem that I could have is that I have setup everything ready for the 301 (I only need to change the DNS on the old site to point to the new server) - so i now have 2 websites running with exact duplicate content (they're identical apart from domain name). I cannot now take the new site offline as it is being used extensively - so I need the old site for its rank and the new site for its function - which is worse - possibly dropping rank for a few weeks between Google crawls or having duplicate content for several weeks till we can do the 301?
I suppose I could 301 the new domain to the old domain, leave it for a couple of months until the important ranking season is over then swap and 301 the old domain to the new domain... or would that be too confusing for Google and SEO rankings?
Lastly a bit more technical info that might help:
There is actually two old sites both identical (mirrored because they thought it would be good for SEO not knowing about duplicate content problems). The two old sites are both .com.au sites. The new domain which I want to 301 both sites too is a .vic.edu.au site which is an obscure domain name related to the education department in Victoria, Australia - I have been told that government and education domain names tend to have better chances with SEO, but I wonder if such an obscure domain extension might hurt my chances?
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Anthony

The more powerful your site the faster things happen, so it is not possible to give you an exact amount of time.
In the past 18 months I have 301ed two sites and two subdomains. These were all PR5 and within 48 hours some of the new URLs of the most important pages began replacing the old URLs in their exact position in the SERPs. Some of the less important pages and PDF documents required several days to switch.
A couple folders of pages had some difficulty and were in and out of the SERPs for a couple weeks. These were retail pages and we lost some sales.
Within 30 days everything was back to normal. The websites that were 301ed performed as usual but the subdomains that were redirected to a folder in the root had large ranking gains.

Hi Anthony,
Are we talking 2 different domain names?
are the content from site a to site b are the same ?
Usually crawlers when they come to your website and notice the 301 they will keep visiting your site and they will swap the urls.
If you are moving to a different domain, you might see some drop in rankings due to the new domain low authority and it takes time for the main authority to move from one domain to another.
the higher the authority of site A the higher this will be a faster transition with out any interruption in rankings..
so in a summary if you are moving from a domain to a new domain, or the new site have some changes in content, i would wait till after the holidays(if you benefit from the holidays)

Site redesign - 301 Redirects
I've just overhauled a website, leaving lots of former posts in the dust. I've set up a 404 redirect to the home page so that if anyone goes to one of those old pages they land on the home page instead of a dead 404. But, there's a couple urls from the old site I'd prefer to redirect to similar pages. These urls have forward slashes and I don't know how to get the slashes in when I copy it over to the new site. This is probably something easy, but I'm baffled. This www.lawbarron.com/personal-injury/whip-its-nitrous-oxide/ becomes this when I copy it www.lawbarron.com/personal-injury-whip-its-nitrous-oxide Can someone help me out?

Recovering organic traffic and Google rankings post-site-crash
Hi everyone, we had a client's Wordpress website go down about 2 weeks ago and since then organic traffic has basically plummeted. We haven't identified exactly what caused the crash, but it happened twice in one week. We spent a lot of time optimizing the site for organic SEO, improving load times, improving user experience, improving the website content, improving CTR, etc. Then one morning we get a notification from our uptime monitoring service that the site was down, and upon further inspection we believe it may have been compromised. The child theme that the website was using, all of the files were deleted and/or blank. We reverted the website to a previous backup, which fixed the problem. Then, a few days later, the same exact thing happened, only this time the child theme files were missing after the backup was restored. We've since re-installed and reconfigured the child theme, changed all passwords (Wordpress, FTP, hosting, etc.), and we're looking into changing hosting providers in the very near future. The site uses the Yoast Wordpress SEO plugin, which has recently been reported as having some security flaws. Maybe that was the cause of the problem. Regardless, the primary focus right now is to recover the organic traffic and Google rankings that we've worked so hard to improve over the past few months up until this disaster occurred. The client is in a very competitive niche and market, so I'm pretty frustrated that this has happened after we were making such great progress, Since the website went down, organic search traffic has decreased by 50%. The site and all internal pages are loading properly again (and have been since the second time the website went down), but Google Webmaster Tools is still reporting a number of pages as "not found" witht he crawl dates as early as this past weekend. We've marked all errors as "fixed", and also re-submitted the Sitemaps in Google Webmaster Tools. The website passes the "mobile-friendly" tests, received A and B grades in GTMMetrix (for whatever that's worth), and still has the same original Google Maps rankings as before. The organic traffic, however, and organic rankings on Google have seen a pretty dramatic decrease. Does anyone have any recommendations when it comes to recovering a website's authority and organic traffic after it's experienced some downtime?

Will google penalize a website for using a table layout?
I just got a new client today and his entire website layout and structure is using tables instead of divs. This client is on a tight budget and wants to avoid unnecessary hours for re-coding the website, but at the same time he wants me to improve his SEO organically. This is the first time I've been asked to do work on an existing website that uses pure tables for the entire layout and I'm wondering if this effects the SEO in any way. So my question is, will tables effect rankings and SEO in any way?

Using a 301 vs. 302?
I'm running into a very confusing situation - and while I think I've worked through the answer, I'm hoping someone can help provide their insight. I have a client who is in the process of rolling out a responsive site. Because we need to host both Responsive and legacy versions of product pages on the domain we are using the following URL pattern. New Responsive Product Page exampleurl.com/product (existing URL structure) Older Product Pages (redirected to) exampleurl.com/legacy/product The rollout will be approximately 2 months to complete. The question becomes - should a 302 redirect be applied from the existing URl to the /legacy/ URLs until the new designs are launched? Given that the timing will be so short this seems reasonable. Or should a 301 be applied until the new responsive designs are rolled out?

Site Ranks on Page 1 - Would launching new site hurt that
Hello, I currently have a website ranking in the top 7 for my main keyword. The website was built in 2004 and is definitely outdated, yet still ranks very high and brings in business. If i launched a new site on this domain, what would happen to my rankings? Would they drop? would they rise? If i don't launch the new site, will this site eventually drop due to being old and outdated? Any advice would be helpful...

Competitor Rockets to #1 and I'm looking at keyword stuffing. Will Google catch up with it?
We have a competitor whose home page rocketed up to number one, page one, on our key search term after they did a website redesign. They even beat out the original retailer for that position, as they are resellers of the product (not affiliate sales, resale in the secondary market.) They are the first to knock the original seller out of the #1 position. In the past couple of years that I have been doing in-house SEO, they have never ranked on page one for the term. I ran their site through the SEOmoz page grader for the specific search term, loading their page that is ranking, and found that they grade a “B,” but have some alerts for keyword stuffing, (the search term is on the home page 30+ times,) and they have eleven tags on said page. Aside from the two things listed above, they have pretty good site architecture on this new site, and are pretty well branded, etc. Should I expect Google to catch the keyword stuffing and eleven tags, and possibly adjust their rank? Will their keyword stuffing come back to bite them?

Will opening in a New Window pass all link juice?
Hey guys, We're in the middle of designing our core navigation for our new site, which will feature a blog. I want to make sure the blog is linked to from the main navigation to pass all of the link juice to it, but since it isn't the core feature of the site we want people to view, I don't want it to take attention away from other things. Due to this I am thinking about giving it a main navigation link that opens in a new window. It would still be reachable from every page on the site, but it would allow users to view the blog in a new window rather than leaving the main site. The blog will still be on the same domain in a domain.com/blog subfolder. My question is... is this good practice? Will this pass the necessary link juice from our root domain to our blog, or will opening it in a new window detract from the value of the link? Any other comments / issues with designing the navigation like this that I'm not thinking of would be appreciated! Thanks
