My client has lost his URL - is there anything he can do to salvage SEO?
-
My new client has had his URL for 8 years and built up good SEO, visitors and links. He has now lost it and the cost of getting it back is prohibitive.
Apart from contacting all the places he is currently getting links from, is there anything he can do to salvage SEO and site visitors? Is there anyway he can get 301s done if he no longer owns the URL?
If he starts again with a new URL, and loads all the new content on it, will submitting a site map help Google understand its not duplicate and all the content is just at a new URL?
He is hoping that contacting Google and explaining will help them "look kindly", but I have never heard anything like this happening!
Any ideas?
Many thanks

Thanks everyone - apart from following up on backlinks, will try the GWMT route and hope for the best!

Hi Chammy,
With no other information on how he came to "lose" it, I would say his only hope is if he still has access to the Google Web Master Tools account, but he would have to act NOW, in the hope that the new domain owner is slow in getting things organized.
The process:
- Purchase a new domain
- Upload all content and ensure that site is ready to go as soon as new domain resolves
- In Google Webmaster Tools, create a Site account for the new domain & verify it
- In your old Webmaster Tools Site account, notify Google that the site has moved to new domain
- Add a few pages of completely new content to the site on the new domain
- In the Webmaster Tools Site account for the new domain, use "Fetch as Googlebot" to fetch each of the new pages and up to the maximum 50 most important pages in the site. (If a page is successfully fetched with this feature, you can manually add it to the index.)
- Find all existing backlinks possible (using Open Site Explorer, Majestic SEO, link: search operator in Google, Bing & Yahoo) and contact as many of those webmasters as possible, advise of the domain change and ask them to correct their links.
As Alan pointed out, the only way that this will work for him is if the new domain owner is slow in setting up a GWMT account and he still has access to his existing account, so basically, he needs to act immediately and pray a lot
Incidentally, if he has already missed out on the opportunity to tell Google about the change of domain he should still follow the steps above for the new domain and try to get the links corrected if he can to get some quick traction where possible.
Hope that helps,
Sha

So he let the domain expire?
You can not contact Google if the domain has expired, all trust will be lost, you can also not 301 re direct a domain you do not physically hold.
What you can try and do is acquire the domain when it comes back onto the market, yet with high competition it may cost a fair amount, especially if the domain is a good generic term & has 8 years age.

You mean he has lost his domain name?
He can not 301 a domain he dose not own, he need not worry about duplicate content as the old content will drop out of the index eventualy.
If he still has access to the account in GWMT, he can remove the site, but i would hurry before WMT tries rto validate the site again and finds out it no longer exists

SEO Elements for Canonicalized URLs?
I am helping a client with SEO for their ecommerce store. They have around 65 products, but close to 500 URLs all for those same products. Basically they have a bit of an index bloat problem but long story short restructuring was too much of a lift for them, so I got them set up with a canonical URL strategy to ensure all duplicate pages point to one "main" product page. Getting to the point: They also need an on-page overhaul. I've created keyword optimized titles, metas, H1s, etc. for each product. Do these elements need to be added to every single one of the 450+ product pages OR do I only need to add them to the 65 "main" product pages that everything else is pointing to, since that will ultimately be the page that gets crawled?

Am I doing SEO test properly?
Hello, I just created a page for researching the impact of social signals on Google ranking (in Italy). Page was not optimized (one internal backlink, no other external/internal links, keyword repeated 4 or 5 + h1 h2, no alt tags), and only social signals are being stimulated (through votes). The domain is 2 months old and is already positioned for few relevant keywords, but from 2 page down. My question is: am I doing right? Is this a good way to proceed? And if not, what I should do instead? Thank you for an advice. Eugenio

Can you recommend a Web Developer who specializes in SEO?
We are an e-commerce site, http://www.ccisolutions.com running on an obscure Web store coded for us by a small company called Assist, located in Utah. We believe we have numerous problems with our code that are negatively impacting our SEO. One such problem, the current meta refresh on our homepage, is in the process of being fixed (Thanks to Jenn Lopez at SEOMoz for helping me convince management it was important enough to pay the $ for the fix!). However, I believe there could be numerous other issues. I am the SEO strategist, but I am not a coder beyond basic HTML and CSS. Can anyone recommend a highly qualified Web developer who's strong in SEO that we might hire to do an audit of our code, including recommendations on how to fix anything that might be discovered as a problem?

Backslash in URL
my main URL is www.americanmusical.com, SEOMOZ shows I have a duplicate page title on www.americanmusical.com/. I have the think the backslash is causing other issues. I noticed when I first go to my site it is without the /, but if I navigate to the home page, the URL has the / in it. Any ideas on if this is a problem or how to handle it?

Domain redirect seo
Hello, my domain www.pacomarca.com and when i start the new campaing i get this pronblem: We have detected that the domain www.pacomarca.com and the domain pacomarca.com both respond to web requests and do not redirect. Having two "twin" domains that both resolve forces them to battle for SERP positions, making your SEO efforts less effective. We suggest redirecting one, then entering the other here. my domain is in networksolutions.com. how can i resolve it? many thanks Gonzalo

301 an old URL with a ? in the URL?
I am redoing a site and the URL's are changing structure. The client's site was in magento and in the store they would get two URLs, for example: /store/categoryname/productname and /store/categoryname/productname?SID=dslkajsfdoiu947598whouieht983hg98 Do I have to 301 redirect both of these URL's to their new counterpart? Both go to the same content but magento seemed to add these SIDs into the navigation and Google has both versions in the index.

Hosted in the Cloud, my URL is a .com how can I rank in UK SERPS?
Hi Mozzers, I have found an e-commerce SAS solution (USA based) that hosts its platform in the Cloud. Unfortunately my domain is a ,com but I wish to rank & sell within the UK. I realise I can select the UK parameters within GWT, but I am led to believe that this isnt hugely effective. Other than choosing another eCommerce platform, could anyone please assist me in identifying a solution? Thank you in advance.
