Quality Article written, but on many sites.. Duplicate issue?
-
As part of a re-design of our site including the integration of our previously separate blog, we are using some of our quality articles regarding our industry to get backlinks to our site. Fortunately in our niche industry it is possible to find many out-dated articles, broken links, and just low-quality article content. So my question is.. if we have one article that would potentially allow us to get not just backlinks, but that actual article copied in full onto the other site, are there concerns about duplicate content and the link being useless? --Should I be changing the article a bit every time? --Should I ask them to only copy the first few sentences and link back to us to read more? - Other options? Cheers all

You do risk that those would look like duplicates, and the search engines may filter one or more copies out. If they do that, you may lose any link-juice from them (although that's a lot tougher to measure). The links could also just look low-quality, if you're "spinning" out the same article over and over.
It really depends on the scope. If you did this 3-4 times with a couple of articles, I doubt you'd have any major issues. If you do it 100 times with 1 article, you may get a short-term ranking boost, only to see those links devalued a couple of months later.
If you can get people to post a blurb and the link back to your site, that's definitely ideal. That's the best way to protect the content and signal that you're the source.
You can also have them use the canonical tag, as Daniel mentioned (cross-domain), but my concern is that you'd lose the link-juice. I haven't seen a good study on that. In other words, you'd be seen as the source and would rank for the page, but Google might not count the link back to your site.

I'd say you should look at using the canonical tag on all the duplicates so that search engines know for sure which is the original.

When does Google Webmaster update your links to site??
Hi everyone We removed a load of links from a site over 2 months ago but they still show in Google webmaster tools. I understand Google will not be reading this links as they were removed so long ago. However I just was interested when Google might update these as not showing as linking to us anymore. I like to try and keep things tidy and its a bit frustrating it would be good to be 100% sure what Google is counting at any given time. Cheers James

Content Strategy - High Value on Lots of Sites vs. High Value on One Site
Good afternoon Mozzers. I have a discussion based question and I'd be interested to know your thoughts. I currently implement a content strategy where we create a series of high value How-to written articles, relevant to our audience and then work at getting them placed on multiple high value websites. I have just been offered an opportunity with a PR6 domain to create a similar series of content but place it all on their site with links back to ours through a dedicated section. So my question is would I gain more value from small amounts of great content in lots of places vs. a lot of great content in on place? Effectively 1 link from 20 sites vs. 20 links from 1 site.

Linking to a site in the US from a site in the UK - Good, bad or not important?
Would linking to a site in the US from the UK do harm or good if the site being linked to is industry related? i.e. a UK web design company linking to a US web design career site.

Pros and Cons of Links in Articles
My question pertains to articles that I'll be submitting to certain article directory sites. What are the pros and cons (If any exists) of adding links to the body of an article for certain keywords vs. just adding a link to the website at the bottom (i.e. visit us at www.somewebsite.com) ?

Sell content - will it be duplicate?
Hi, We are on the verge of selling some of our content articles to a business partner. But my concern is about the content appearing severeal places on the web. It will most likely be labelled as duplicate content. The articles have links to our site, so link building-wise it would be great to benefit from these. What would the best solution be? 1. If I ask the partner to set pages to noindex - google will not label it as duplicate content. 2. If the partner sets the pages with a canonical link to our page, will this be okay SEO wise? -Rasmus

How to target keywords on a new site?
I have a site I launched a few months back, and the niche isn't all that competitive. After a bit of work the domain is now sitting near the bottom of page 2 on google but it's number 2 in yahoo search. I have been manually building the links but they are all targeted to just one keyword, and mainly have the same link text. Will this look suspicious to google, and should I be spreading my anchor text over different keywords? Or is the reason Im ranking so well in yahoo be because they are just picking up more backlinks? 23 from yahoo but only 9 from google.
