Content Ideas in a limited market

I've hit a road block of sorts and my mind is having trouble thinking out of the box. I'm in a relatively small niche with a roofing product called snow guards. I am struggling with ways to build links and content for my website at www.roofthings.com. I've used some forums, blogs, and directories.
After going through my competitors link data, it seems that one of the biggest links they have that I don't is a DMOZ listing, but that can take awhile and I have submitted about 7 months ago. It also appears that a lot of their links I cannot get are coming from construction magazines they paid to be in. I don't have that kind of budget at this time and so I'm trying to compete via organic rankings. My biggest thing I am struggling with is how to gain more back links. My biggest competitor has over 40,000 links compared to my 2700.
I'm somewhat new to SEO and am just looking for a couple suggestions. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Great answer from EGOL! I'll add in my two cents as well, based on a little personal experience.
I'm a California girl, I've lived here all my life and have never lived in snow. I don't know how to deal with it, what questions to ask, etc. My parents have retired to Virginia, where they do get varying amounts of snow in the winter. At Christmas I often look for things that could be helpful for them to have around the house, what could make things easier for them, etc. I need the explanation as to why this will be helpful, what conditions it's helpful in (great for Minnesota snows, but not as needed when you only have a couple of inches), is it good for someone in the AARP age bracket, can I use it on a slate roof, etc.
I'd also have someone look over your pages and make sure there are no spelling and grammar errors. On one page, I spotted a sentence starting with "His" instead of "This". If you copy and paste your pages as plain text to Word, it can help with spotting some of these typos. This will help your user trust a bit more.
A final note about your roof rake. On the roof rake page itself, I don't see how to order extension handles, yet the video (which really helped me understand how it worked) talked about you can order them to extend the rake up to 40 feet.

I have a couple of retail sites and of the time that I spend working on them.... 90% of it goes to content about how to use, features, benefits, how it works, how to repair, comparisions..... 10% goes to standard product writing and none of my time is spent on link acquisition. none... the content generates links on its own.

Sometimes it is difficult to get out of your own thinking box when you are the only SEO person in the house (or the only person in the house for that matter).

It is really hard to get links when your site is nothing but a sales platform.
I suggest creating some great content about your products.
What are their benefits? Get up on the roof with a video camera and show what they look like installed. Get video of snow melting around them and show how they work. Explain all of this in a great article with photos and diagrams.
How are they installed? Do the same as above.
How do different products compare? Do the same again.
Make your site the best on the web for these snowguards. The best - not second.
These videos should not be chest-thumping promotion of yourself, your company or your products. They should simply be unbiased informative content that anybody anywhere can learn from without feeling that you are trying to get into their wallet.
Now you have something linkable, likeable, tweetable, emailable. Promote it to people who install your product, encourage them to use your video and include it in a blog post, promote to manufacturers because you have made better content than they have. Ask them to post on their blog about your site or on their FB site.
In addition to improving your site these videos / articles will improve your credibility and make your site the go-to place for snowguards. That will increase your sales.

Outranked for own content
One of my clients has a travel site and is syndicating apartment listings to the likes of tripadvisor and flipkey. I've just done an SEO audit for them and noticed that when searching for snippets of text from within an apartment listing, these aggregator sites outrank my client by miles (which is the original creator of the content). How would you suggest tackling this issue? We can't give up the aggregator sites as they're bringing in sales. The first solution that comes to mind is send different descriptions to aggregator sites than the content on our site, however this would mean rewriting a ton of content. Any other suggestions on how to treat aggregator/comparison shopping sites?

Site Ranking for keywords that they haven't targeted in content
There is a site that I am constantly battling for the #1 spot for a particular keyword and I can't see that they are doing any link building, they are not using any anchor text for the keyword "at all" just their company name (not exact match) and their content doesn't even contain the keyword. I used Open site explorer to analyze their activity, but they are doing something I can't figure out from that data. Any other tools to use? I have higher quality links than them, post content nearly 5 times per week to my blog and their blog hasn't been updated in ages, I kill them in social media, there isn't one instance that they are better than my site and I only build quality driven links, no blog comment crap and get featured on lots of industry blogs for our work. I distribute my content very effectively, I just can't figure it out. They were no where about 5 months ago now they are tearing it up for lots of keywords in the industry top spots. I can build a few links and surpass them, but I have to do it every week or so and I think they are doing something fishy. I just want to figure out what they are doing and bury them. I don't want to post their url and mine here as I don't want them to see this post in search results.

Blog post ideas!
Greetings, I have started up a team of web designers. But we are located in a very competitive market and having a fairly new domain our chances are narrow standing out in the seo for a while. But to my notice most of the top search results for website design related terms don't use rich snippet or don't even have quality links from high end websites. So we believe we stand a chance with content marketing. As the competition is nowhere in social signals we plan on using content marketing by adding a blog. Now I am short on content/blog ideas. So any help in it would be a great help. Our focus is primarily on website design and search engine optimization. Thanks

One client - 2 domains / same business - good or bad idea?
This is a follow up to a previous question actually: My client has one domain that has 'hardwood flooring' in it and one that has 'concrete polishing' in it - both services they offer. **Would it be wise (for seo purposes) to have them both point to ONE domain (more general of course) ** **- They only have a few local competitors that aren't doing anything to rank well. ** **- They aren't trying to rank nationally. ** If the smart thing to do is to have them point to one (more general) domain using a 301 direct will there traffic drop significantly? (at least for a short time) Does it matter if they continue to keep the existing domains they are using now on their literature, business cards, etc. and let them continue pointing to the new domain or should they really start promoting the new domain name? (They do NOT want to do this). My only concern is saving them time and money by not having to build links, submit articles, social media, on and on for two different sites OK, that's like 3 questions Thank you VERY much for any thoughts or opinions on the matter! 🙂 Have a great week everybody! Much better authority and content than some competitors, why do they appear first?
On august we have lost the top positions for some keywords. Our website authority is 62 (google page rank 5), and some quite small competitors appear first now (some of them have authority 22, google page rank 3!). Our only big change was the DNS server, from godaddy to dnsimple.com, which seems to be some milisseconds slower. Every other metric is in our favor: from on-page repports to site speed. Sometimes by a factor of 3 or 4. What can be happening? We have also realized that, in private browsing, rankings will change a little bit in different cities, even if they are quite close to each other.

Ecommerce Duplicate Content
Hello Everyone I would like to launch an ecommerce website. Most of the competitors in the same market are using some duplicate content for their product description What should I do? Use the same duplicate content knowing that everyone else is doing the same or rewrite it. Will I get penalized by Google if I use duplicate content? Tool to scan contents of a page and see it through Google's eyes?
Does anyone know of a tool that can be used to input a URL and have it spit out keywords of how Google could possible see what the contents of that page is about?
