Social media links/buttons - best practices
-
Has anyone tested social media buttons, to see which types, styles, and placements get the most clicks? Should they go at the top of an article, or are they OK at the bottom? Should the icons definitely have labels? Display # of tweets and Likes? How big should they be?
My preference is for discrete buttons with a smallish, plain icon and a label. I don't display tweets or Likes, unless it's a healthy number. And I still think a "share by email" icon is important. I put them at the bottom of the article, to keep the home page uncluttered and lead the eye into reading the article. I'm also concerned about leaking rank from the homepage, especially for a site that's still establishing itself. But if moving buttons to the top gets more shares, that's probably better.
Is there a Wordpress plugin that you really like? (I haven't found one yet - I'm still hardcoding my social media buttons.)
Opinions are great, but test results are better! Can anyone share?

I've never actually experimented with different placement, other than different positions on the bottom of posts. I can say that with one fairly popular site I run (25k visits/day) Faceook, Twitter, and email comprise just about all of the share clicks.
Of those, Facebook is clicked about twice as often as Twitter, and Twitter a bit more than twice as often as email. Despite that giant Facebook sharing lead, Twitter sends just about the same number of incoming referrals as Facebook.

Julie,
Thanks for the plugin, I'm trying it on a non-profit site. It'll be interesting to see what gets clicked, but again, it's only after-post chicklets w/ no comparision to top-of-post. So I guess it doesn't answer my question... yet.
Apparently no one has tested this, or they ain't talkin'!
PM sent with some feedback.

Related to the plugins, my company just released a free social media icon Wordpress plugin, and I would very much like to get feedback from the SEO community on it. The Wordpress plugin page is here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/trackable-social-share-icons/
In short, it adds icons to the bottom of posts, lets you choose from a dozen icon styles, scale the size of the icons, choose whether to include text with the icons, and of course choose which icons appear. In addition, any clicks on the icons are automatically recorded in your Google Analytics event tracking (requires the current, asynchronous analytics).
We made the plugin because we wanted the tracking, but the only plugins that did what we wanted also shared all kinds of user information with a 3rd party marketing agency -- and in the process also slowed page load speed.
At any rate, we just released the public version of the plugin and would really like to hear from a wider base about what features it might be lacking, what we should change, etc. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

I think the results of such a test would be very site-dependent, with things like site/page layout and design, visitor eyetracking on a particular page, degree of visitor engagement with the page content, length and reading level of the content, embedded links in the content vs no links, etc. having a bearing on the outcome. Tests on my site may be totally irrellevant to yours.
I don't like showing numbers if there are only couple of tweets or likes (or none at all) - can send a message that the page is NOT popular.

I am really interested in this too. I personally agree with much of what you say. I keep the icons at the bottom of the page, dont show user amount or details - just keep them as basic as possible really!
I have used a number of WP plug ins but not found one I really like yet. Some look stylish but are really too in your face. It would be interesting to here which ones people recommend...
To go one step further on this topic, which social media do people show? Obviously there are hundreds out there but in terms of making the webpage readable and usable which do you normally go for? I tend to pick the typical email, twitter, fb, digg, stumbleupon and not too many others.

Exact keyword match for meta title and h1 what is best practice?
How exact should my meta titles and H1 one be compare to the keyword you wish to rank on. Eksample. When I do a research with google AdWords the keyword tool shows me: 260 monthly searches for house for rent Hua Hin 140 monthly searches for Hua Hin house for rent 70 monthly searches for House for rent in Hua Hin The first two includes the exact same 5 words while the last one includes the stopword "in". That google have different search volumens for these very smilair search queries tells me that small differences matters. So how does that effect the way i shoulf write my: a)meta titles b)H1 I feel I get better sentences often by reordering the keywords etc. “Top tips on how to rent house in Hua Hin” Instead of “Top tips if you want a house for rent in Hua Hin” Do you use stop words like “in” hua hin. (only used in 25% of the searches queries)? Also would it matter if i write a plural form of a keyword instead of a singular etc propeties and sted of property? My goal is to write easy to read and unique content but i feel i can make exact matches if required with out compromising to much.

Best practice to solve this Unique duplicate page content issue?
I just got Seomoz Pro (it's awesome!), and when I did a campaign for my website I discovered that I have a big issue with duplicate page content (as well as titles). The Crawl Diagnostics Summary told me I have 196 Crawl Errors Found (I had a total of 362 pages crawled on my site), and as much as 160 of these was duplicate page content. Which to me sounds like a big problem, correct me if I'm wrong (I'm very new to SEO). So our website is an ecommerce that sells greeting cards. The unique part about our platform is that we offer the customer to make a customization of the cards.

Let me walk you through each step a customer takes so you fully understand: They find a card they like and visit the product page of that card (just like on any ecommerce store.) They then decide they want to buy it. There is no "Add to cart" button, they will instead click on a "customize the card" button. 3) This takes them to a step by step process of customizing the card. They change the name on the front of the greeting card so it says for example: "Happy Birthday Katy!". And then adds a personal text on the inside of the card. They then add an delivery address and when it should be delivered. After that they proceed to checkout and it's all done. This is my website (it's in Swedish): loveday.se - it will take you to a product page so that you can click the green button and see what I mean with the customization pages. Hopefully it helps even though it's in Swedish. My issue starts at the customization part of the site (the bolded step above), as I can see the permalinks in the diagnostics I got.
This step-by-step process looks exactly the same with every card in the store. Same call-to-action headline, same descriptive text etc. The only difference is a JPEG-file with the unique greeting card design. So, what is your take on this? Let me know if I was unclear about something. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.0 -
Are My footer links bad?
I started working here recently, they said the footer links were to help with navigation of their most popular products. I am curious after reading http://www.seomoz.org/blog/internal-linking-strategies-for-2012-and-beyond if having these footer links could hurt the ranking of those key words after the penguin update. I am looking more into the analytics, and have not seen a negative impact yet.

Too many on-page links
Hi, My website - www.thepartyhouse.com.au is showing as having too many on-page links for over 4,000 pages. Take for example the homepage which is showing as 188 links, but I don't understand this because I've used SEO tools to display the links and I am showing around 90 links on this page. How can I see what all the links are? Thanks

Blog outgoing links to a certain domain?
Hi Mozzers, I am working with a website with very decentralized ownership. There are two different languages, each with a different owner. Owner A keeps linking to crap sites, that hurt the entire site. My question is this: Is there a way - through .htaccess or robots.txt - that Google can be asked NOT to crawl the links to external crap sites? The problem is that Owner B cannot control Owner A's html, and thus not implement rel="nofollow" on links. Thanks!

Link juice question
In theory: If i have a page with only two outgoing, do-follow links,
On-Page Optimization | | elgoog
and both have the same target,
only the first one will be counted.. right? Will that link pass 100% or 50% of the link juice? (if the anchor text is the same or different does not make any difference i think)0 -
Too many on-page links
I manualy counted the links on my website http://www.commensus.com which came to around 50, but SEO moz says I have over 100 and google isn't seeing them all.
