Quick Wins and 'Low Hanging Fruit' - how do I identify them?
-
Hello,
I have fairly recently taken up a position as an in-house SEO, having previously had my own (not terribly successful) ecommerce venture, so my SEO experience is at beginner level.
I have read a LOT in coming up with a strategy (Laura Lippay's 8 Step Strategy, amongst so much more on here, has been epic), and have come up with something fairly comprehensive. However, it's taken me months! This is partyly due to other non-SEO responsibilities, and partly due to finding my way around all the tools & resources available, how everything fits together and what should be prioritised over what.
This is massively inefficient for future projects, or indeed if I ever got a job in agency, and so I need to get quicker/more productive. I keep reading about identifying and capitalising on 'low hanging fruit' - how does one go about this? Details would be hugely appreciated - starting from the bottom up, i.e. keyword research, competitive & backlink analysis, link building etc.
For the record, I have zero coding capabilities (something I plan to rectify one day soon) and so my strategy revolves primarily around content and outreach, rather changing site architecture. In any case, our website seems well put together, since new content is indexed very quickly.
Thanks so much in advance,
Ali (UK)

Great advice, much appreciated.
Luckily we do have quite decent traffic already and so I can see good scope for improvement already.

At my office we do not have any SEOs or designers or content writers or developers.
Everyone here is a "webmaster". A job that requires broad expertise and responsibility.
Working in silos is ineffective.
-
totally agree EGOL, but then your steping out of SEO and looking at UX Design - increasing CTR's with split testing etc.
-
Most of the 'low hanging fruit' that I have picked has been figuring out ways to make more money from my current traffic rather than going out after new traffic. If you are working on an established website with good traffic it will probably be easier to double your income from current traffic than it is to double your traffic. Better ad placements, more effective paths to YOUR goals, more enticing descriptions, more obvious calls to action are examples.
Get Tim Ash's book... Landing Page Optimization.
Other 'low hanging fruit' has been simply knowing my products and discovering SERPs where I have no presence or an unoptimized presence and building an attack on them.

No worries, im pretty sure my reply is what there on about when they say low hanging fruit, although Seb's reply are good things to check.
I will say paying for the membership on here will be a good thing for the company you work for to pay for.
You wont find a better bunch of SEO pros (who know what there talking about) then on here.
Few places I like to check out and use are: copyblogger, myblogguest, webdesignersforum and viperchill.

I've actually already done a very comprehensive click-through analysis of all our organic keywords, so identifying these shouldn't take much time at all.
Appreciate the wise words!

Thanks Sebastian, this is good common sense advice that I really should have thought of already.
Hopefully I won't be fixing such errors for too long, since our site is an ecommerce one with many thousands of pages!
-
Go into Google Analytic's, check out all the keywords generating traffic organically, export a csv of the data and copy all the keywords into Google keyword Tool.
If Google Analytic's says you have received 50 visits from 'fluffy bunnies' over a monthly period and the keyword tool says the local monthly search volume is 5000 searches, go into google and query 'fluffy bunnies', there is a good chance your result isnt that far into the results as you are picking up clicks off that term.
Thus low hanging fruit, if you work on the already ranking term, which might be on page 2 and push it through to page 1 your see a good increase in traffic for the term without to much effort (depending on the keyword).
You find 5 of these and work them up... well you get the picture.

Low hanging fruits are usually common errors/mistakes someone made. So for starters I would do the following thing:
Register with Google's webmaster tools.
Crawl your site with xenu's link sleuth (google it, its freeware).
- Look for 404s -> fix them
- Have a look at all titles of you page: are they unique, short and do they have the important keyword in the beginning.
- Look at the depth of your page. Anything above 4 should be looked at.
- See whether all pages send the right status code (404, 200) and the right charset
- Analyze one page with Google's Pagespeed Browser Plugin, fix whatever comes up

Backlinks on sites that aren't relevant, how does google determine relevancy?
I have a competitor who I've talked about on here before about how they passed us in ranking for our main keywords and that they were a new site ( less than 6 months old ). Well after further digging a few things were found out: Our site seems to have a penguin penalty causing our keywords ( a group of synonyms as well ) from ranking better than rank 30. As well our competitor has been using this weird backlink tactic of using SEO sites ( a friend? ), a parent site to prop it up ( footer links and others ) as well has links inside articles that aren't relevant as in having a commercial niche page inside a lawyer site page talking about phone dialing. Then the low DA directory sites. I'm curious as to if penguin algo will catch them once it comes out, if not penguin a manual review would certainly catch their tactics, but this site is doing everything else other than proper SEO. What do you think?

When pitching a whitepaper as Push Content for Link Building, is it ok to give the person I'm pitching a link to a landing page with a form on it?
When pitching a whitepaper as Push Content for Link Building (i.e. pushing out content that my client has created), is it ok to give the person I'm pitching a link to a landing page with a form on it? Or should I create a landing page with the whitepaper included on it? I’m not sure if the client will be ok with this b/c I know they use the whitepaper for sales purposes to gain leads. For example, my pitch email would include a line such as this, "the whitepaper can be found at LINK and I'd love if you could share it with your readers." I think it may be weird/a little wrong to ask a webmaster to include a link on his site to a landing page with a form to get the whitepaper. Does this make sense? What have others done with whitepapers as Push Content for link building?

Why isn't SEOmoz a BBB accredited Business?
I'm just curious. I help run an online resource-based business. Recent'y, I've done a fair amount of research about becoming a BBB accredited business and it all seems to point to it being worth the money. No only for the link, but also for the potential increase in conversion due to the trust that comes along with their brand. It just seems to make good business sense. But I noticed that SEOmoz isn't accredited, and it made me wonder if there was something I wasn't considering? I mean, why wouldn't they want a valuable link like that? Does anyone know anything I don't?

Should we use 'disavow' if we dramatically dropped serps after Oct 5th, but did not receive a warning?
We dramatically dropped serps after Oct 5th, but did not receive a warning about bad links on google webmasters. Is it a good idea to find and collect the worst links and disavow them? As there was no warning we can only guess links were the problem, but it seems likely. However we do not want to send any requests to google if no warning was sent. Can disavow be used in this way, or should we do more manually? (We are hoping remove links + increase very solid links + optimize for key words will help revive serps) Many thanks. James

Can't rank with certain keywords for the life of me
I have a website http://www.freescrabbledictionary.com in which functions as a scrabble dictionary lookup and word finder for scrabble. There are many keywords that rank well for this niche but the main ones I target are Scrabble Dictionary Scrabble Cheat Scrabble Word Finder Scrabble Help I used to rank well for all these keywords, I am 4th with scrabble dictionary currently but with the other 3 am no where near the top. On March 24th I dropped off the map for scrabble cheat, scrabble word finder and scrabble help. I actually dropped to 9/10th for scrabble dictionary on that date as well but since then I have been able to hold on steady to 4th. I can't figure out why I can't rank for those other keywords anymore. Its almost like Google has penalized me for those keywords. I have contacted Google a few times to ask if I have any penalties and they have told me that I don't. Even though in my backlinking I have targeted these keywords I can't seem to rank for them no matter what I do. The only idea I have come up with is that Google has re-associated those other 3 keywords in a group and separated scrabble dictionary on its own. I have other sites I have created in the same niche and I have noticed if the URL contains "word", "Finder" and/or "cheat" I can rank in the 3 keywords within about a week all the way up to the second page. My main site FSD has the highest DA and PA compared to my other sites. Any idea why I can't seem to rank for those other 3 keywords anymore?

Focus on guest blogging not working; what's the best quick fix?
I have always used strictly white-hat SEO tactics, targeting long-term results, my main focus being on quality guest blogging. I have been working on a site for around 6 months, and I started out with my keywords ranking very well, but very little traffic was coming to the site. 2 weeks ago I expanded my keyword list considerably in an effort to drive more traffic, but last week my keywords all took a nosedive. My client wants an answer by Thursday. I know there's no quick fix, but what's the best way to quickly get my rankings back up and serious traffic to the site? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know if i should post my articles to other forums or sharing sites to create back links?
All the articles on my blog are written on my own. I write about 5 ones per month. I don't know if i should post my articles to other forums or sharing sites to create back links? I have heard that it may cause adverse effect because my blog will be crawled more slowly than those forums, so Google will consider the articles on my blog (as) copies. Is that right?
