Problem with left navigation links on an e-commerce site diluting pagerank
-
I'm trying to decide how to deal with left navigation links on my e-commerce website diluting the amount of link juice passed to other links on the page. Any suggestions? Only options I can think of are:
- Nofollow the links
- use javascript (I'm assuming googlebots are still able to find these)
- Leave them as they are as followed links
-
The links on our left navigation are not category links, they are refinement links within the same category. Here's an example page from our website:
-
You listed three options.....
- Nofollow the links
- use javascript (I'm assuming googlebots are still able to find these)
- Leave them as they are as followed links
Another option is, remove some or all of these links.
Another option is, instead of using these links, figure out how to get the people to use them to a category page where all of these links are presented with a beautiful menu.
.
(If this was my site I would probably add MORE links to that left nav and follow all of them. Don't know if this is the right choice for you but on the sites that I know adding more keyword-rich links brings in more traffic. The minor pages get more juice and all of the keywords in the left nav combine with your page content to bring in more long tail. Might not be highly targeted traffic but its more traffic.)

What are the left hand links pointing to? If the pages are unique content, with value, I'd personally leave them. Just make sure that the links to your key content appear before them in your code.
If they don't link to unique content, but still have value (ie price filtering and similar), then you could use rel=canonical on the page and remove the passed variables in webmaster tools.
I'd be more worried about the chance of them creating duplicate content than leaking internal rank. Plus just using NF causes it to dissipate anyway, as Adam says.

Nofollowing links will NOT pass more link juice to other links on the page. The link juice simply disappears for nofollowed links. This was put into effect a year or two ago.

we have the same problem. it is becoming imposible for me to control these links.. the good amount looks which we can have are 100 but it is difficult to control these links at 100 as we have lot of items on sale and to provide the use easy navigatin must put lot of links in this menu
still finding a solution for this problem

The left navigation is the same at the top? If you have more categories it's important to follow these links.
How many products have the page... use pagination and a standar view for users/robots with 100 link aprox. and give the user the posibility of change this view, but the standar view for robots to index is the 100.
I hope it helps!
bye

Canonical in Shop Areas of an E-commerce Site. When and Where?
Hi Guys. A quick one about duplicate content... So we have a lot of pages that are very similar on our site, but are actually different products. e.g) Our Fortnight view refills and our week to view refills. Our MOZ report defines this as duplicate content. Question: Would a canonical tag be the way to go to 'remove' this duplicate content? And if so, which page should it point back to? Just picking one of the products? Or the higher level Landing page? Many thanks in advance... Isaac.

Footer-links (navigation)
I want to put navigation links in my footer. I watched the (distilled) whiteboard friday video saying it can be a penalty. How are links in the footer different from links in the navigation. Why don't you get "hit" for putting the word "Real Estate Listings" in the navigation menu? It appears on every one of the 30k pages. I don't get why the links in the footer would have a negative effect if the links in the navigation don't. My example is a real estate website. When people are browsing properties (30k), it is convenient that at the end of the page there is a navigation of areas. I could put the navigation on the sidebar but that would be in essence, the same thing. A wordpress site would dynamically include that sidebar on every page.

Blocking Pages E-Commerce Site
Hello, I am working on a site with 1,000's of product pages, some of which do not have inventory in them. Should be blocking these pages in order to reduce bouce rate? How could i manage so many pages efficiently? It would takes weeks to comb through pages to determine which have inventory and which do not. They are also time sensitive as they are live events so dates are always changing. Thanks!

My site has been dropping, not sure why!
My site has been dropping in the rankings, not sure - my metrics seem better than my competitors. Historically I have been a very stable #2 for my main term, but now it's down to 7! According to SEO Moz, my domain authority is 32, while my better performing competitors are are 26, 11, and 1! Have more links than they do. Trying to think it through, not sure what is happening. My home page bounces at a low 20%-ish, other Google Analytics are good. I have a company Facebook account, occasionally upload YouTube vids, do online press releases, etc. I do have to target several metros scattered across the state, while my competitors usually focus on one major metro. I do have some SEO Moz errors, which focus on dup content due to our web editor's naming system. An example would be domain.com/keyword-keyword-i-14 vs. domain/differnet keyword-different better keyword-i-14. 14 would be the actual page number. Our system lets me change the page title keywords, as I've added new links and pages over the years there are some dupes. The only major change is I've added a password protected section for sales rep materials. The hosting/web guru firm we use has assured me Google doesn't see pages behind the password portection. Not sure if Google is testing a new SERP formula. All social media or non-website results seem to have dropped out of search for my terms. Just local business sites like mine and some directory sites remain. Any advice or private consult would be greatly appreciated as I am a ... self taught 'OneManBand' for high tech marketing in our company. Thanks

Too many on page links on ecommerce site
I have an online store with 10 catagories, many of those have subcategories. I have a tree style navigation menu on the page. This helps people quickly find what they need. However, I end up with about 125 links on the page that way. Does google really penalize me for this? Is there anyway around this? Advice much appreciated!

Site wide internal links in footer
What is your take on site wide inernal links in the footer, e.g. for the most competitive keywords? Do you think those links are still useful or are those links of little value from your experience? It is an old school tactic but I still see many sites doing it.
